Grazie Matteo

I really like the rendering of colors on the Meike, its more green/warn vibe, the sigma 18-35 is more of a Neutral look, gives out more neutral true whites, it's not like you can't achieve the Meike lens look with the sigma on post but it's something to keep in mind, overall nice video Matteo, it's always refreshing and nice to watch your work, have a good one buddy !

@Sinanimre

Somehow, the sigma looks more "precise", and the skin looked better on the sigma imo. But the Meike add a bit of life to the shots, felt more like a natural look. At 0:45 though, I really love the meike way more than the sigma, the details in her hair and the bokeh looked very "eye like" (sorry for my lack of technical terms). It is really interesting though. With my little knowledge, everytime I try to compare major lenses like canon or sigma to vintage 50 euros M42/FD lenses, or Samyang, Meike cine lenses, the result is the same to me. The big modern brands usually are sharp as hell, but in terms of immersive clips, the vintage lenses or modern cheap samyang (cheap compared to a ARI cine lens). Plus I love having manual and basic aperture and focus control, so that helps...
@eifionjones8513
@eifionjones8513 3 года назад
I like the Meike better in every shot. The sigma is more than good enough. It’s great. But the meike just has more feel to it. I know from your previous posts that you’re not a fan of the samyangs but i like them and find whenever I do similar tests between my Samyang primes and my sigma 18-35 I find that I like the vibe of the samyangs too much to sell them but the versatility and the sheer clinical quality of the sigma prevents me from selling that lens either. A businessman would just keep the sigma whereas an artist would just keep the primes.

I do like the Meike, but I still prefer the Sigmas for the color neutrality. The Meike’s push noticeably warmer and that would annoy me during the grade if I know my shot white balance is coming out warmer than it was supposed to. I think the Sigma paired with a Black Satin 1 or 2 is the secret weapon.
@matteobertoli
@matteobertoli 3 года назад
Not sure, the Sigma is incredibly blue/magenta, ultra contrasty and in my opinion doesn’t have character. But again, I love vintage glasses and for me the Meike just produces a more pleasant looking image :)
@davidmultimedia2024
@davidmultimedia2024 3 года назад
@@matteobertoli The Sigma is ultra contrasty? From what i see, even though the Meike has some vintage qualities (mostly when it flares), it's still way more contrasty than the Sigma. Look at your side by side shots. It almost looks like there's less dynamic range, because blacks and shadows are darker. Plus, the sigma isn't blue/magenta when you're not comparing it to a warmer/greener looking lens. The thing is that our brain is always auto-white balancing itself. You look at warmer/greener shot, your brain set that as neutral. Then you look at the Sigma and see way more blue/magenta. Totally normal. Same reason why you need to color-grade in a room with neutral walls (mid grey if possible, or white) to make sure you make proper adjustments. Still, the Sigma is a bit on the colder side, true, but it's not incredibly blue/magenta. It's closer to neutral. The Meike is a bit creamier/less clinical though, which i really like ;)
@ErrickJackson
@ErrickJackson 3 года назад
@@matteobertoli I definitely agree that the Sigma is contrasty, but that’s actually just something I personally like about Sigma lenses. But I definitely don’t see a heavy blue/magenta bias. Based off of my experience in what a 5600k daylight scene typical looks like, the Sigma seemed to hit more neutral while the Meike hits warmer and softer. And both are great; I just personally prefer to start with a clean optic and dirty it with filtration.

@@davidmultimedia2024 I had the same feelings as you...this Meike is nothing special.
@davidmultimedia2024
@davidmultimedia2024 3 года назад
@@LucaBono.Studio Well i didn’t say the Meiki wasn’t good though... i do really like the diffusion. I believe that when they say the Sigma has more contrast, they are referring to the lack of light diffusion (the separation between shadows and highlights is smoother on the Meike). That’s what gives a vintage lens most of the character (imperfections scattering the light coming in).
@davidmultimedia2024
@davidmultimedia2024 3 года назад
I have to admit that i'm quite confused here. I also notice some vintage quality to the Meike (more light diffusion) while being quite sharp, but at the same time it has crazy high contrast (more than the Sigma, which is very strange). I kinda like the look of it though, it's quite impressive for the price. One thing i don't like about fully manual cinema lenses though (for my kind of shooting) is that with a declicked aperture ring, it's easy to move the ring without noticing (you won't be able to know it, unless you look at the numbers on the lens itself. With the Sigma 18-35, you still have a fully manual big focus ring, but you still control the aperture with the camera (and can always make sure it's set properly just by looking at the screen). Yes, with a manual aperture, you can smoothly change exposure, but i realized that i would NEVER change the aperture during a shot without editing (wether the transition is smooth or not). So keeping that in mind, i have absolutely no use for an aperture ring. I'd rather use ISO to adjust exposure anyway (since i normally choose an aperture based on DOF, and not exposure). It's also hard to repeat the exact same exposure, since you have to position the ring perfectly on the target every time to get a constant exposure. It's easier to just roll the aperture wheel to the proper number instead and get constant results. Obviously, this is my opinion for my kind of shooting only. I understand that cinema lenses are designed like this for a reason. I owned a few Rokinon cine lenses years ago, but realized all i wanted was a fully manual focus ring, with minimum breathing. That's why the 18-35 is still the best lens for me.

The real winner here is the Sigma. Maintains a more nuetral, and sharper, image..as a PHOTO ZOOM..than a modern cinema prime. All of the "vintage-like characteristics" of the modern Meike prime are byproducts of lower optical quality. By dxomark testing, the worst of 18-35 qualities lie on the 35mm end, with peak sharpness at f4..and it still out performs a 35prime in sharpness and color accuracy...once again, the 18-35 is a zoom, not even being tested at its highest quality end....the winner is the Sigma
