This is a very known problem with dslr and sigma art. Sometimes you don’t resolve this even with the sigma dock. The great news is that on mirrorless there isn’t any of this problem with any lens

It's such a shame because it's a nice lens otherwise 😫if you've already tried calibrating it and it still didn't fix the issue, the only suggest I have is to take some extra photos during a shoot, which is what I did while I was using this lens just to make sure I had some sharp ones :)

It's very interesting how the same lens is super sharp and accurate in mirrorless A7iii but not in 6d mark ii. I also had the same issue with my sigma 35, even after using the dock to calibrate it properly. The dock didn't help much. Rather I Microadjusted my 6D mark ii for the lens and it's now good. No more soft focus and tact sharp on the spot. :)

Nice video but I this that Sigma might have been a dud or needed a micro adjustment on your camera. Its supposed to be super sharp from everything I have heard. You mention at the 6:05 mark that it wouldn't be an issue on the EOS R and you're right, so when are you switching to the R? :) Eye AF is sooooo much better than focus and recompose on a DSLR. Way more keepers too.

So I recommend for people who are getting 3rd party lenses to try play around your micro adjustments setting after buying it

The price of the Canon is not justified (Canon thinks it's Leica!), especially since it contain even more plastic than the first version. The Sigma has better micro-contrast and nicer black and white tones. The new Tamron 35mm 1.4 is also a serious competitor for the Sigma.

@fy7589

I think the canon's glass is a bit sharper overall in the center and the sharpness area in the center is wider than the sigma. This is why in F/4.5 the background on the canon lens is sharper. That means the sigma lens has a much shallower focus field than the canon which is more useful for professional work in daylight portraits etc. However for night time work, having both lenses wide open, I'd prefer the canon for that case.

I love my Sigma art lenses. They never disappoint and are FAR superior in contrast and resolution to any second hand Canon-L glass I own and can afford. Sure, there's the new Canon L stuff which might have the edge but costs THREE to FOUR times as much where I live. Sigma ART is where it's at. I do use mirrorless so there are no focus issues in my case.

I missed that EF 35 ii. It's the best lens I know. I traded it with the RF 35. The RF is noisy, slow, not as sharp, as bright, or as pop than the EF. But I hate adapting lens to the point it feels like a tele. Fortunately the size, the macro and the I.S is what makes it as worth as the EF 35 ii.

Julia, i love your channel and style in photography, thank you for making photo related content in this high quality :) About the lens... i saw a few images with slightly missed focus, even with the really precise middle focus point. I'm using a 5d4 body myself, and i had all the issues you can possibly imagine with these lenses. Actually the 3rd copy of my 50mm Art worked properly. (the first copy was missing focus more what you can fix at home with the usb dock, the second one, even after calibration gave me shots with missed focus, sometimes it produced front focus, and then, in a really similar situation, i was backfocusing...) unfortunately, for both sigma and tamron lenses on DSLR-s, the usb dock is a must. on the positive side, if you spend that small amount of time to calibrate your lens to your camera body, it will gives you an amazingly reliable performance and the peace of mind! i had the 50mm ART, and i got the 35mm as well a few days ago, this weekend i'm gonna finetune that too, really worth a few hours just to make sure you have the AF right, and then, you don't have to worry about any focusing issues!

One little thing you forgot to mention: With Canon you will get consistent quality control. With Sigma, traditionally, its a matter of luck. If you hit the lotto you will have a great lens for a much more affordable price; if you don't, you will spend the rest of your days sending it back to Sigma. That has been my experience from since before you were born.- Service wise, I think that for off brand lenses, Tamron is a much better proposition and if you can afford it, don't even think about it, stick to your name brands.

I do know that for "objects" around the house, focus is very accurate. Also, I updated the lens firmware with the Sigma dock and that makes the AF work faster, and allows for full compatibility with the EOS-R lens corrections. That's an important step. Since you shoot lots of models, I would take your word for how well it performs over my own experience with static objects. LOL

Great job, Julia! Loved Katya with that beautiful torso and great abs. For me, this comparison makes the choice in which lens to choose very difficult in that both had strengths and weaknesses, although the Canon seemed to be a bit better overall. I liked the Canon colors more, but when a lens is as sharp as the Canon, then sometimes for portraiture, its greatest asset could be its greatest flaw in that people don’t want every minute blemish to show up in their photo. I’ll wait for the RF 35L to arrive on the scene, but here, for the price, I’d go with the Sigma. I wonder, though, how the Canon RF 35 macro would fit in here, as well as the Canon EF 35 f2 IS?

Julia Trotti sigma seems to have good and bad lenses and they tend to have problems with back or front focusing on DSLRs and have to calibrated sometimes. There‘s also the sigma dock. There‘s a lot of bad things to say about the art series in terms of size and weight, but all I ever hear are, that the sigma art primes are among the sharpest lenses out there, at their maximum aperture. At the end of the day I‘m not a pixel peeper anyways and would probably be happy with either lens. But if you‘re in the market anyways might as well do the research and get the best value for your money.

Great video as usual. Personally I can not see using a 35mm for portraits. Your subjects are usually very beautiful looking people and even with the distortion of the 35mm they still look great. My experience with “non-models” has been horrible with 35mm. Even in your one shot where your model’s shoulder is closest to the lens it looks gigantic. The effect is less when doing full body shots and the 35 does come in handy but up close is not something I would work with.

I didn't use the sigma till now that I have an eos R, total different lens! with my 5D Miv it was too inconsistent and unreliable for paid shots

My best friend shoots with a 5d Miv and has been trying to sell her Sigma for the same reasons... I have an EOS R and have been DYING for a 35 1.4. I figured I should go the Canon route because of everything I've heard, but NOW... Sigma's price point has me hooked. You really don't have AF problems on your EOS R? I'm so scared to invest...

in my opinion, sigma showed the best result in some situations; in a blind test I would hardly have identified a winner

Great video as always! I see that you switch back and forth between the Sony and Canon. Is this more for video variety or do you still love the Canon and hate to put it down compared to the Sony?

I noticed that you seem to tilt the camera up when pushing the shutter. Are you doing that on purpose? Doesn't that introduce a bit of camera shake?

Ive reacently heard of people having trouble with their sigma art lenses. It seems like they can occasionally have big problems with back/front focusing, and Some people havent even been able to fix it with a tap in consol. This was news to me.. but aperently this is a problem with sigma.

these pictures are shot at different shutter speeds which can change the sharpness of the photo. maybe use same settings?

Hello Julia, did you have to calibrate the Canon 35 to your camera body?

some DSLRs do have contrast focusing if you switch to live view mode, like the EOS 6D, and you set the focus mode to anything other than quick focus.

Sure and then reset it when shooting while model or you move in distance

Hi Julia! I absolutely love your videos. I am just starting out actually I literally just started doing research. I am 24 and I have had my canon t2i since i was 16 I never learned how to properly use it. I am taking full advantage of this time to learn about portrait photography. I have watched about 10 of your vides in the past 24 hours I love them. Thank you so much for the information. I am trying to figure out what would be the best for lens to start out with would be.

Nice, Julia.. It's a pity Sigma lenses can't be trusted when it comes to Autofocus. It would be great if you could do a similar shout-out with the canon 35mm f2 IS

Does the 5d allow you to micro adjust lenses? If so you don't need the dock. Also if you go in live view you get the same mirrorless focusing features. I actually bought a screen viewfinder for my camera for when I want to do that.

What stands out to me more so than the sharpness, is the global rendering.....the Canon wins here - the sigma is more clinical. Btw I own both lenses...and my Sigma copy is sharper, almost too sharp....so I use it for product photography

the sigma looks really soft. I think that the sigma ART series lenses are not super good at very busy photo's. my 50mm f1.4 sigma has a lot more chromatic aberration compared to my 70-200 f 2.8. one thing I really want to mention is the the mount of my sigma lens keeps loosening. this looks to be a decently common problem for the ART series lenses. with a long, narrow screwdriver it's fixed in 5 minutes but it's still a dumb thing to happen to a €800 lens. but at the end of the day its bitterly half the price.
