There's no doubt that the Sigma is the better lens, although the little RF 1.8 is very good for the price. I think it depends on what you use the lens for. If you're doing formal shoots the Sigma is a no-brainer. But having used both (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Sigma), the Canon is miles better if you're walking around, vastly lighter to carry and makes you far less obtrusive. In an ideal world I'd own both.
I own the rf 50mm f1.8 and the Sigma 50mm f1.4, i went out and shot with both of them on the Canon R6 mk ii and I was amazed the $200 lens was making the sigma look bad. I did notice the colours being a little off on the sigma, so now I know that I need to update my sigma. i was able to fix the colours in the post. I did notice though when you zoom in the nifty 50 was sharper as far as the detail. that has to do with the mount on the canon rf with the glass being closer to the sensor. great video.
Comparing images with the embedded preview? I think rebuilding the 1:1 previews or doing that in develop module would be a better indication of lens performance.
Great comparison, thanks! I really like the look and feel of the sigma. It's a shame that it's not sealed - I photograph a lot of dogs and there is water flying around frequently. It's even sadder that the other art primes like the 85 and 105 are actually sealed! I hope Sigma come up with a 50 1.4 for mirrorless with sealing.
I'd love to have that - especially with sealing. But the latter won't happen, because it would cannibalize the 50 1.2.. Maybe Sigma will come up with that, though.
Great comparison! That little 50 did a great job. You also did a great job standing in almost the exact same position for both sets of shots. That part would have driven me nuts. I do wonder if it was fair to add the cost of the adapter against the sigma as most of us have multiple EF lenses that will work on that adapter. I personally don’t use the control ring much (either w/ RF or EF glass) as its position is all over the place across multiple lenses. Anyway, take care.
Yeah, there are other choices for the adapter. I just wanted to be upfront and honest. I wasn't crazy about the control ring wither, but I really like it now
Nice video. Lenses are usually better when stopped down further than in this video. F8 would be better, f5.6 as well. The RF 50mm f1.8 STM is NOT at it's best at f1.8
Great choice, and I might be wrong but as far as I know I don't think it's necessary to use Sigma 'dock' with mirrorless cameras. Sigma dock intended for Art lenses on DSLRs to fix focusing issues
it does not make much sense to include the adapter in the price ratio, unless you want in the future to spend huge amounts of money on RF lenses and take only those.
Good video! Sigma is much better than the RF 50mm... I almost bought an RF35mm too, it is not as sharp as sigma options were. The size is too large to be practical, but I much prefer the quality of the sigma so guess I'll have to get used to carrying it
Facebook marketplace gas been my go-to place. I've posted in other locations, but that seems to work the best. I belong to a few local "sell items" groups on there
I was actually able to try both. I didn't record it because I returned the ef50 2 days after I bought it. Canon had just announced the rf. There wasn't much of a difference. Honestly, the rf was a tad bid sharper, but not by much. I believe Canon is having a labor day sale, so the rf should be close to the price of the ef version this week
That price comparison is totally wrong, the adapter and the dock can be used in many other lenses, besides that, the RF misses the lens hood, witch is pretty important.
that first comparison looked off. the rf lens is much sharper then that. looks like you had motion blur or missed focus. you can tell with your other portraits that its sharper then the 1st one...
"Nobody could tell it`s the 1.8", really! You could and it`s enough. Because I am not a pro and on a budget but I want top quality I got the 50mm Canon EF f1.2 used. I also have the Eos R body to match it with. If you make money with your gear you should go for the top glass to up your game. The glass is the most important. For me the nifty fifty is not an option, never has been. It`s that 5% better rendering and that magic a top prime will get that I am after...
Well, sorry to disappoint you, but he was referring to the RF 50 1.2😅 The Sigma 50 1.4 Art completely wipes the floor with the EF 50 1.2😂 That lens is, by far, the best autofocus 50mm for EF mount
The Sigma, too big (even without the adapter), too heavy, and much too expensive. A no-brainer. The Canon is the RF loss-leader. Much ado about nothing. ;-)
The Sigma Art series lenses are typically class leading. I have a 105 1.4 Art that whoops the 85mm f1.2 RF L. The Art lenses are generally sharper with less CA and built to last a lifetime.
Sigma: weight with ef-rf adaptor =1050gr; price with ef-rf adaptor = $1050 US. Canon: 160gr; $150 US. RF 50mm f/1.8 performs a lot better starting at f/2.8. For me, it's a clear choice. I would rather go with Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 and an adaptor for the same price as Sigma. Not a great choice by you IMO.
