Sigma 56mm 1.4 Portrait Shoot Ep7 (Sony A6500)

In this video I head out with the Sigma 56mm 1.4 and get some portraits of both Tia & Beau (our 6yr old boxer dog).
Lightroom Preset Pack:

We managed to get out in Golden Hour, so I used the sun as a backlight though the trees for the portraits of Tia which seemed to work pretty well.
The dog portraits of Beau came out ‘okay’ - but couldn’t quite get her posed the way I had in mind! They say never work with kids or animals right?!
Tried to edit the images of Beau with that ‘moody green’ look I’ve seen knocking around on RU-vid / Instagram. The images of Tia didn’t need too much work - they looked pretty good straight out of camera - just tried to edit for that warm, vintage kinda feel.

Fascinating work Stuart! Subscribed your channel the moment I finished watching this video of yours. M just a novice, got myself a Sony a6100 and Sigma 56. Would like to understand how you were able to take those shots with movements(Tia and Beau moving around in the frame), without any shake or blur(and you clearly didn't have a tripod). Could you help share your camera settings please - like focus mode/area, shutter speed & also how you adjusted the lighting etc. Really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi I have the Sony 50mm f1.8 already, would you recommend replacing it with the sigma 56? Or what should me next prime lens be? I’d be using it on a a6400 for portraits specifically

Hey Robert - for portraits I'd definitely be sticking with the 50mm range (which is roughly 85mm equivalent on full frame). In all honesty, I don't know if it's worth the upgrade - I have a suspicion that you'd find the Sigma to be better - but it all depends how much better I guess.

Great video, I just purchased the 56mm, so this overview really helps. It would be great to see you compare the standard prime lens to the ART Sigma version of the same/similar focal range. Sigma really is kind of just holding the weight of the APS-C world on their shoulders since the main manufacturers aren't. Sony has a couple fairly priced decent lenses, Canon had a couple EF-M primes, but basically everything else is "here's a couple zooms, buy full frame lenses for your camera that are unnecessarily more bulky/expensive compared to an APS-C lens so when you 'upgrade to full frame' you'll be good." Good coordination, shots, and finished edits had a nice color/look to them (especially for a like walk/shoot without extra reflectors, fill flashes, etc).

Hey Yoel, thanks so much for watching 🙏 . I plan on getting a 'settings video' done real soon. With regards to Videography - Gear wise, if you're using the A6500, I'd say buy lots of spare batteries! 🤪 On a serious note, I'd recommend just trying to find anyone or anything around you that's interesting, and look at how you can turn it into a mini project. My first project was for a local Boxing coach - I didn't charge him anything - I just asked to go along and interview him along with filming some B-roll to make a mini-documentary. It was a fun experience and learn't loads! Plus you get something to begin a portfolio with. hope that helps!

I wonder how you manage to have so nice pictures. I've got Sony 6400 with sigma lenses and when i am underexposing and then pulling up the shadows in lightroom, there is a lot noise in final pictures. I can see in video your exposure meter is often very low, but you still manage to have so nice pictures. Please do some kind of settings video, thanks!

I plan on doing a settings video real soon Hlavyn. You may be under exposing too much. Remember if you’re shooting in RAW you can expose a little more ‘normally’ and pull the highlights down a bit. Also - what ISO were the photos?

Hello Stuart I'm taking pictures of my wife's family at the weekend. I mainly only shoot wildlife with the Sony70-200mmf4 and the Sony 200-600mm with my A6600. With the APSC ‘crop factor’ - using that lens would be way too tight in my opinion (probably over 200mm in full frame equivalent). The 56mm is awesome because the field of view is still workable. You could maybe also look at 85mm lenses?

It does lack a few features that the newer models have - but yes it should deliver the same image quality for stills 👍

Do you apply presets on your photos or just quick edit each of it?

After editing one image - I create a preset, apply that to all the other images, then just make basic corrections 👍

I’ve just bought this lens for my m50. I’m completely new to photography. Is it right that the image on the screen is blurry so you can’t actually see the the image / composition until you press half way downing the shutter?! Using the view finder seems to be ok but for some reason the screen is always blurry. 🙈

I don't think it is normal... I have an m50 with kit lens and the image is clear

Which picture profile do you use for your a6500? Also, what's your iso level, give or take around this time of day? All in all, perfect video man. Subscribed.
