Peek inside the mind of an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware he’s been turning into a living weapon: Introducing Sigma.
@@heckbrother8242 oh im sure 100% props to all of the people that worked on him was just really amazed by the voice it was really good ofcourse the art and everything else is no less!
"It's too much to hold on to." Such an insanely well delivered line. I like to think that this was the last sane thought Sigma had. A final, all encompassing realisation that everything is about to go catastrophically wrong. And there's nothing he can do to change that.
I also believe when ever he's says it again while stripped up is after the accident but now having being able to hold that power he realized it's to much. but as he said at the end, gravity is a harness I have harnesses the harness.
"all encompassing realisation that everything is about to go catastrophically wrong." I like to think of this as Blizzard when that trailer dropped, all downhill from there. that trailer was the last glimmer of talent from that company.
I mean... Quite literally to. If a black hole the size of a pea exists, its mass is basically almost our Earth (at about .42 times). So if one that's about the size of your palm exists, it would most likely weigh more than our solar system. Plus the Hawking radiation would've disintegrated him in an instant and I don't see him wearing any protection gear on his head. It is, in every sense of the sentence, "too much to hold on to".
the full line he was going to say was “I will bring you a new understanding of the universe” but it cuts to him saying violence. u can hear him say the UN - before it cuts to violence OMG THE MORE I WATCH IT I UNDERSTAND IT MORE AND MORE. he was going to say the universe, but him saying violence followed up by the gunshots is TALON brainwashing him and giving him his 3rd personality.. wow this short is brilliant mmm idk, u actually see him in his talon suit before u hear the gunshots.. so actually i think that violent tendency was in him somewhere already ACTUALLY, when he says “RELEASE ME” its a double meaning. Talon initially free’d him, only to tamper with his mind and make him violent. it was foreshadowing.. yea this is brilliant
Sigma is the only other charachter apart from bastion that I have ever felt sorry for, he is the victim of his own genius and is truly one of the most interesting heros
I feel bad for both of them to be honest But I fell bad for half the characters from blackwatch as, most were evil beforehand, but moria had corrupted and experimented on so many people and turned them into monsters, take reaper as an example, he was already kind of bad but moria just cranked the dial to 100
He seems to zigzag in between. He's calm and collected in interactions, he's sometimes panicked when he's using abilities (GIVE ME JUST A MOMENT!) and he revels in the violence on killing blows (TO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN!)
ChorusHM yes. One of the main theories is that he has something like a split personality syndrome. It’s pretty well depicted in the final scene where there is a sigma with a light black hole and a dark black hole. You can also hear him say “release me” in reverse when he is shown with Talon in the last few seconds, as if the good in him is trying to escape
*Sigma in lore:* Mentally unstable scientist being manipulated by a terrorist organization whilst constantly glitching reality. *Sigma in-game:* Quirky high school physics teacher who also happens to manipulate gravity :))
0:30 the sheer terror and confusion in his voice is kind of spine chilling. It sounds so real. And it really makes you feel bad for him. Sigma definitely has one of the best if not THE best voices in the game. Which is saying something in a game full of phenomenal voice acting. Massive kudos to Boris Hiestand.
It's even worse when you play sigma, every time you pop your ult, you hear the melody, I literally asked myself once "what is that?" Cause it felt so out of place
Keep coming back here every time. How they created such a rich, unique character and just abandoned his potential is mind-boggling. He’s likely one of the most well-known heroes at this point and they literally only have this video that sheds light on his past.
You're preaching to the choir he was done dirty. At least give him a cinematic.Idk why when blizzard has a really compelling character they don't expand on it. Sigma literally could have his own movie or series EASILY and it would be extremely compelling
This is lovecraftian horror. In a toned down way of course, but it is still cosmic horror. The story of the explorer, the valiant and brave, pushing the boundaries of knowledge, understanding, reality. The story of the one that pushed too far. Pushing out of it. On the other side of understanding, being able to know and think and feel in ways the brain is far too primitive for. And then returning back from the void. Back to what is known, but still remembering. Not remembering how you thought, why you thought, how you felt, but remembering only that there is something *more*
@@genghisn7 What, what is it? Why does it sing to me? The universe... IT SINGS TO ME My eyes have opened, I can see it... That melody.. What is it? WHAT. IS. THAT. MELODY *the field it is failing me* No this isn't right... I thought had it! What is happening i can feel it Hold it together, *hold it together* -hold it together-
@@alexlea8398 There are gods in this game so it wouldn't be suprising to have a mix of what you said and knowledge that one cannot handle. Unlike the other geniuses in the game. He quite literally controls gravity
1:03 is probably my favorite part by far, it shows how quickly he changed from a calm collected composer of a scientist, to a confused, afraid, and very dangerous being not of this world anymore. Siebren de Kuiper died when coming into a black hole, Sigma is all that he is now.
This entire video is a masterpiece, an incredible short story, an outstanding voice acting that lets you feel the fear, anger and confusion on his voice, impecable animation that shows us how twisted sigma’s mind is after his accident with the black hole test and incredible bone chilling sound effects that gives you goosebumps no matter how many times i see this origin story, truly a short cinematic masterpiece that gives us an amazing lore and story that leaves you craving for more lore and animations such as this one
"incredible bone chilling sound effects that gives you goosebumps no matter how many times i see this origin story" TRUE. Im in love with this cinematic. Back to 2019 and now these goosebumps are always the same.
Yeah it's really good, I understand that a fully animated short with lots of action would be extremely expensive to make, but they did a fantastic job with the budget they were given
Overwatch could easily create one of the murkier ideas in cosmic horror. The fact that crossing such a physical boundary as controlling a black hole would tear you apart on an inhuman level both mentally and emotionally is terrifying. It can be interpreted as the doctor crossing a barrier to which it is impossible to use a minimum human understanding, to which the brain is not capable of processing what he lived there, permanently altering his reality. Thinking that the universe itself is "singing" to him. Perhaps it was what Sigma saw beyond her experiment. The terror of the unknown is wonderful.
in game he sounds amazing as well, that feeling of instability is still present at times. So much respect to both the writers and voice actor for delivering such a chilling story
I mean I'm sure the other voice actors could to be as good as this guy but there characters restrict them a lot. I do think Reinhardt is pretty good tho
Something to note with dementia is that, music is one of the few things those suffering from dementia can retain (that's why everywhere at the end of time is such a powerful album), so associating Sigma's broken psyche with a constant melody that he recognizes but can't put his finger on makes his condition even more believable
I’ve always known what Sigmas backstory was but this is my first time actually watching this, and the amount of chills it gave me is incredible. Mad props to everyone who worked on this, especially the voice actor.
Totally, the way he's unsynced from the flow of time is a cool concept, and this nonlinear trailer was fascinating! I just wish his ingame design went beyond "if Lex Luthor was in Battle Born."
I can't state enough how much I love this character trailer. First of all the voice acting is incredibly amazing and powerful. The origin too. My favorite character out of the overwatch series.
In terms of lore, Sigma is one of my favorite characters. I honestly really like when games or movies do the whole "Scientist goes crazy studying the thing they're a professional in" trope. Sigma's study itself is extremely interesting anyways. The study of being able to summon, or possibly even control black holes at one's own will, as well as the power to harness gravity. It really makes you wonder just how powerful Sigma is. If he can make black holes anywhere he pleases, he could destroy the world, if not the galaxy. He's the most powerful character in Overwatch lore-wise.
@@boxman7044 Sigma is the antithesis and the other "piece" of Tracer's power, she got physically lost in time and now can control is while sigma "lost" his mind in "space" and now can control it, and at the end one was saved and other is being used, Tracer could very easily become insane like Sigma if she didn't get help and i'm pretty sure she had psychological help once she was stable in time, sigma on the other hand was imprisoned and treated like monster until Talon found him and is now using him as a living weapon
I would die for a comic or animated short of Sigma, he is the most mysterious and interesting character of this game imo. I love his design, story and theme so much
Cool fact: At the start as the blue letters of ''origin story'' appear on the screen, there are some yellow letters too! If you slow it down you can make up ''EM DJIRVEB''. If you reverse the order of the letters it says "BEVRIJD ME'' which means ''RELEASE ME'' in Dutch GG Blizzard
Awesome. I also noticed the letters and listed them out in a previous comment, but no one responded. Glad to know that it wasn't just a bunch of random letters. :)
I still get chills every time I watch this video. Btw, at first I interpreted this video as different lore than the actual cannon, in that I thought Sigma experiences the fabric of reality/the multiverse in a different way due to his accident, mainly because of his line "Freedom... imprisonment... it's all an illusion" while switching between an asylum setting and the vastness of space. So when he says "Pull it together" it's him focussing on one slice of reality/timeline and even in which direction he's trying to perceive time. Because his backwards messages insinuate that he has even broken through the illusion of time, there is no inherent direction of it. The human mind is not built for fathoming the perception of spacetime like this, which is maddening when it does.
sigmas accident has left his mind utterly fractured yet given him power beyond anyone else in this world (i mean hes got the innate ability to control a fundamental law of the universe). and if his interaction with zenyatta is to be believed. his accident with the black hole gave him a quick meeting with the iris. zenyattas god.
Based on what just happened, I’m gonna theorize that his investigation and his experiments eventually led him to seeing into the “Iris” that Zenyatta keeps talking about. The Iris has been described as not something specific, but everything and it gives an awakening of consciousness for Omnics. Imagine you are something with no thoughts, and no feelings, and then suddenly, you feel something and everything at once. I think that’s how Omnics “wake up”. You give that to someone that ALREADY has consciousness and intelligence, that would and did spit a mind apart mentally. Which is what we just saw with Sigma. This would explain how he’s able to levitate like Zenyatta can. Either that or the shift of gravity… BUT HEY, THATS JUST A THEROY! A FILM THER-
I mean they already have: A blue sniper A literal dead guy A scientist who does plenty of questionable experiments and can literally suck the life outta people
@@pluto3194 Reaper isn't a literal dead guy, lol... He became a megalomaniac when Moira changed the molecular structure of his body, allowing him to turn into mist and back into human form, whenever he wants, the name "Reaper" is a direct product of him lorewise being an edgelord, they constantly make mentions of this with character intereactions ingame, you know... People making fun of reaper being unnecessarily flashy and edgy, and being needlessly wasteful by throwing his guns away when they are empty on ammo, lol. Widowmaker is apparently the one closest to being dead, her physiology has been slowed down so much that her skin has turned blue, her heart apparently barely beats at all... hence why she doesn't feel emotion, she essentially became a sociopath because she no longer feels emotions, you know, except when she kills people, that's when she feels the slightest rush, and because she can't feel anything else, she's addicted to the only feeling she gets, apparently. Both of these people used to be normal Overwatch buddies, or normal people, but became corrupted by the sideffects of various scientific experiments.
@@MyouKyuubi Well, we don't know what happened when 76 fought Gabe and blew up the Overwatch hq. Soldier 76's face got mutilated so its possible Reaper got completely mutilated...but Moira's experiments allowed his cells to slowly fade and disappear over time, essentially making him a walking dead man
I love how Blizzard made some incredibly deep and well written characters just to do nothing with them except put them in one of the most mid games ever made
So Baptiste origin story has been around for 5 months, with 3M views Ashe origin story has 8 months, with 2,7M views. Wrecking ball, 1 year and 1 month, with 3,9M views. Brigitte, 1 year and 5 months, with 4,2M views. Moira, 1 year and 9 months, with 3,7M views *And then there is Sigma’s story, that has been around for 1 week, with 5.5M.* Yeah, they did a good job with this one.
lol you had to conveniently leave out doomfist who has twice as many, and also the fact that sigma's is stagnating at 6 million. he's really not that special
pride But that’s because Doomfist was sort of hyped since the beginning of the game, Sigma almost got to his viewcount in a week while having a much better backstory to boot
@@koshmareq I think it's pretty obvious what they're trying to do. Technology and just humanity in general evolve a lot quicker in war and conflict rather than in peace times, and so Talon manipulates the world to start wars so that humanity can evolve.
With just a couple images and immaculate writing and voice acting, Blizzard created by far the best, and perhaps most loved, character in the whole game. This is by far my favorite origin story; I think it's even better than most of the shorts. Too bad they’re never going to elaborate on his character.
I have watched this absolute masterpiece over 200 times. and not one time have I not somehow or someway shed tear. the voice acting and story telling is absolutely perfect. in two minitues they conveyed the breakdown of a man who is no longer truly with us. the cryptic messaging and subtle little nods and frame changes show this man's racing mind perfectly. a simple line such as 'release me' is made to have so many different meanings and reasonings. release him from what? release what from him? violence? his conscience from his prison of a mind? talon? the mental asylum? this piece of art makes you feel as if you understand what he's going through when you really will never be able to. the shifts in frames showing the depraved and evil side to him that has been repressed like it usually is has been released. so does he want his evil side to be released or does he want to be released from his evil side. a completely different person. 'what is that melody' is again such a simple line but means so much because we will never truly understand what is going on in his head. is there actually a melody? is it all in his head or has he truly transcended? questions that we will never ever be able to understand. the internal conflict is shown to perfection with two of the simplest lines ever. this could possibly be one of the greatest animated pieces of art ever made. so when you hear sigma screaming "het universum zingt voor mij!!!" just think of what this man is suffering and just say to yourself what is that melody?
I was looking for anyone else who cried/got teary eyed. This is my first time watching this, and I bawled. Just the sheer suffering of it all. Such painful internal conflict on a level that none of us could fathom, yet a lot of us can somehow relate.
i 100% agree with your “release me” line. i personally think it has something to do with him wanting his true power/ knowledge released, but he somehow cant do it
He has 3 personalities apparently. One is polite and kind, absolute cinnamon roll; one is scared and confused and doesn't know what's going on; one is violent and a psychopath.
@@zanerich9460 I would love to have another Mech that was focused on a more hard hitting side, D.Va is more of a tanky bruiser right now so a second mech user from Korea that would hit hard would be cool.
apparently, talon has control over him, using his abilities and research...i haven't found anywhere that says that he's really evil, maybe he would have been agood guy if he wasn't manipulated
Ja Ja You’re half right, Sigma likely lost it because he may have been sucked into the abyss he was trying to control and has thus lost control of his sanity.
Junkrat: Insane. Moira: Unhinged. Sigma: His brain was pulled apart and put back together by the unexplainable forces that bonds and even rules the universe. He is something else entirely. Hencewhy his name is Sigma. He is everything and all the previous thoughts and answers condensed into one word, one displaced mind. Just like a black hole.
The "Melody" he's hearing could very well be a distorted perspective of what NASA scientists have picked up as the audio of a Black Hole. To those wanting to look it up, it sounds existentially horrifying. I could Imagine Sigma hearing that right into his ear when everything went wrong.
Maybe trying to harness the black who didn't shatter his mind but it merge his mind with alternate versions he wants to be released is the true one the second is the one holding it together becoming insane which takes us to his universe that's why he is in chains and the flashes of him with the suit on is the one that was able to fully manipulate the black hole energy
@@SgtTeddybear66 actually. Tracer is pretty young. She can handle time travel. But if the accident was like that then we wouldn't have the iconic character we see.
It's never really the obvious terror that scares us as people. It's the underlying fear, what hides at the edges of the forest clearing shrouded that does. Not because it is unknown but in the implications of WHAT IT is. That, is the establishment of fear: sinister uncertainty. Can it be beaten? Is it even visable? Do you expect it?
WOOOAH never have I been THAT interested in a character's backstory. Where's his game, Blizzard? EDIT: Reversed the video..."The melody is a harness" is one of the reversed part. Interesting...
Several years ago, I saw this and was like "oh, cool. this dude controls gravity. Ok." But now with an interest in physics I see his dream, his goal. With this power he has the potential to control time and space itself in the palm of his hand. Essentially, the universe could potentially be bound to him rather than just vice versa.
Please jinx it I already experience Deja Reves that span years apart in entirely too different of locations to be just memory, I’ve been predicting things normally too random to be seen as a coincidence, and swear some things around me happen that I know I did or didn’t do Please help
