Many who are unfamiliar with the disorder often associate it with purely ‘perfectionism’. Some individuals may even think they’re “so ‘OCD’” due to perfectionist traits, which can be harmful to those who actually suffer from OCD. To raise awareness on this issue, here's the difference.

@@Psych2go Well some other things I believe to be differences can be the realism of a thought. It can be as bizarre as believing the world around you to be fake or teleporting to another dimension just by touching the arm of a chair and counting down. The thoughts don’t always make sense. OCD can also cause you to act like your in a loop. Sometimes when I feel the urge to check it I’d look for whatever it is I’m worried about turn my head back but than immediately turn my head to look again and turn it back, and so on. Sometimes when I do this it’s like I’m on autopilot. There’s no break in between the turning back and checking. Finally, my OCD symptoms just manifested randomly. One second I was fine and the next it’s like my brain is flooded with obsessive thought. I’m not sure if all of these is OCD, so take this information lightly. But these symptoms have been consistent and constant.

People with OCD do the things they do (compulsions) because they feel like they need to do them. There's urgency and it's something very distressing. People who like to keep everything in order enjoy doing that and it doesn't interfere with their normal lives. OCD is a very debilitating disorder and Psych2go explained it very well with this video. I've never been a "perfectionist" but have had OCD tendencies most of my life. But I overcame it through spiritual work. I learned meditation, how to be present in the moment which taught me how to observe my behavior rather than blindly following in the patterns and from there change can happen. through shadow work integration and reprogramming techniques I've pretty much changed my patterns and cured it

this is really great for you! i’m happy for you. just be sure to remember that this will not work for everyone. clinical OCD is usually a chronic and life-long condition. methods like this may help to improve symptoms (along with medication and therapy) but i wouldn’t advertise it as a fix-all. though i’m sure that that wasn’t you’re intention! it’s just that it may seem a little diminishing of the severity of OCD. it’s great nonetheless that you shared this story!!
@TheMediumChannel
@TheMediumChannel 2 года назад
@@merlinian209 Yes I agree, however potentially it absolutely can if you understand the power of the mind. Understand there are documented cases from a report in 2019 of people who put schizophrenia into remission without medications...also there is the documented study of a woman with multiple personality disorder where one of her personality developed breast cancer and there was a physical tumor...however when she was in a different personality the tumor disappeared. THAT IS HOW POWERFUL OUR MINDS ARE....I get what you're saying and the last thing I'd ever do is try to diminish anyone suffering with a condition and I agree with OCD having been through it is extremely difficult to shift however we want to empower people sympathetically to understand there are techniques they don't know about and they do not have to be victims. . OCD came from somewhere, usually a childhood trauma..it could be a carry over from other lifetimes which means essentially some are "born with the condition" but it absolutely can be cured..we have the power to altar brain chemistry through meditation practice and lessen the severity and in some cases cure these conditions... we must think outside the very limiting box of modern medicine/pharmaceutical companies that profit from ignorance of our own healing potentials at this time of awakening and begin to tap into the power of the mind which is vast has the ability to heal or manage many more conditions doctors recognize. .

I have a question, if OCD and perfection is not the same, can it form into OCD? What causes perfection? Is it the thought that things are out of order?
@CortoOfficial

No, people with OCD are usually born with it. They are two very different things, and OCD is more like a nightmare. People who have OCD symptoms that look like a perfectionist, are doing these because they believe they have no choice. They may believe something bad will happen or that someone they love would be hurt if they don’t perform these actions.

For me my ocd causes me to think about and obsess about very disturbing gory intrusive thoughts. These thoughts have scared the crap out of me, making me fear myself and fear for others. I was and still am afraid of becoming anything close to a murderer or a serial killer. Because I have these intrusive thoughts I usually end up doing things to help prevent myself from ever becoming like that. Usually what I’ll do, is if any knives or sharp objects are lying around I’ll throw them in the sink or put them somewhere where I can’t immediately get them. Then I usually constantly tell myself no in my mind and I tell myself that I’m not gonna ever end up like those monsters. This usually repeats every day and it’s a constant nightmare and hell for me. I just wish I didn’t have these scary intrusive thoughts and I really wish I was normal. But of course I was born with a curse and I’m now stuck with this for the rest of my life. Also what makes things worse is the fact that I struggle with severe anxiety so whenever I have intrusive thoughts that make me worry I’ll end up having a panic attack. Over all I hate this and just wish I were normal..

Nothing infuriates me more than seeing someone say that they're OCD because they like things neat, meanwhile I spent a ton of money shipping my hoarding when I moved because I couldn't just throw it away, used to stand waiting on someone to pass because I couldn't cross the line they walked, did compulsions every time I saw numbers or had an intrusive thoughts and to this day still can't touch doorknobs, light switches and the sink or sit on my own toilet without covering because I've had these contamination issues so long that even now knowing it's OCD I just can't bring myself to touch things and feel dirty. But sure, like things organized a certain way is totally the same as spending 20 minutes brushing your teeth cause they don't feel clean enough or crying for an hour because your brain is convinced you committed a crime and forgot or are going to lose control and hurt someone even though you don't want to ( even though your OCD will then say you're lying to yourself and you're just a bad person no matter what). Totes the same. Anyway thanks for the OCD content.

I got diagnosed with ocd last year because I had a nervous breakdown over my health. I was convinced I had appendicitis and it terrified me. I did "checking" by doing things like pressing my stomach or dropping from my tippy toes to my feet to ease my mind. Although it provided reassurance for a while it always came back and I had to reassure myself again and again. Eventually at a new years I drove myself physically ill with worry and cried in the bathroom and eventually ended up throwing up. OCD is exhausting. I'm glad to be medicated just to escape from the intrusive thoughts.

Thank you for bringing more awareness to OCD. I have been living with OCD since I was a child, officially diagnosed in my early 30’s and finally thriving now at almost 40. With proper treatment you can lead a happy, productive life with OCD but what is needed most is better awareness and proper diagnosis from the mental health field. I spent a miserable 20 years because doctors and psychiatrists misdiagnosed me as depressed and treated my illness as such until I found a great psychiatrist that really listened, put 2 and 2 together and gave me the proper diagnosis of OCD and treatment, only then did I start making real progress.

I showed slight symptoms in 1st grade and my teacher said I would “grow out of it” little did she know. My perfectionism is a part of my OCD and people always say “you don’t have it unless you have this and this” when I have terrible intrusive thoughts, things NEED to be just right or I feel like I will die, and this effects the way I feel about people and relationships too. I also feel that people forget OCD can be genetic (to my knowledge, I could be wrong tho)

it’s also super important to note that ‘magical-thinking OCD’ is not the ONLY presentation of OCD. some people with magical-thinking OCD will experience thoughts such as “if i don’t flip this light switch __ amount of times this __ awful thing will happen to me” etc. but this isn’t the case for all OCD people. sometimes the obsessive thoughts and compulsions may be quite rational but will instead be very out of proportion. such as washing your hands multiple times because of an obsessive fear of sickness etc. Also worth noting: having obsessive thoughts about harming others or doing something awful does not mean that someone with OCD is at all likely to actually act out those thoughts. usually the compulsions in response to that is in order to prevent that thing from happening or to feel like you’re preventing it from happening. Also also: the level of insight that a person with OCD has can vary greatly. some people with OCD may be completely convinced that their obsessive thoughts are real and that their compulsions are really preventing then. whilst others may be fully aware that the obsessive thoughts aren’t real but will still feel the need to act out their compulsions in order to sooth their anxiety or “just to be safe.” hope this helps give some extra info!

It's quite possible that I have OCD, and the misinformation surrounding it make me terrified to claim that I do, or admit that I do experience symptoms. I have a lot of intrusive thoughts and compulsions that pop up a lot, and it honestly makes me feel like I'm going mad. We're continually editing our thoughts and words to ensure we don't accidentally "cause" anything or say something that gets interpreted as horrible or bigoted, among many other things. I'm quite tempted to send this video to my parents, as they don't seem to have really internalised the fact that it's not perfectionism. They'll make jokes about stuff and refer to it as "CDO" because "you want it alphebetised" or whatever and meanwhile I'm trying to ignore the echoes in the back of my head mumbling about my dog secretly having a certain illness I cannot will myself to write and hurting someone :/ like we're dodging words and phrases because if I interact with them bad things will happen according to the ocd brain.

I feel like I'm a perfectionist by nature and my OCD thrives on that even more. I'm a writer and whenever I'm writing OCD kicks in and convinces me that I have to write things in a certain way because otherwise it will not be "perfect" which for me means "not qualifying for my own set high standards". It's hard to explain but basically my OCD tells me I'm a failure and that my texts doesn't make sense and that I have rewrite it in a "right way" to make them perfect and it's on the loop again and again. I had many other ocd subtypes(cleaning, religious, moral, hurting) throughout my teenage years they always change. But only recently as I found passion in writing they switched to tormenting me on the thoughts of perfection. I'm now working on my mental health, doing therapy and accepting myself and uncertainty of life. To everyone who has ocd You're strong guys💛I believe in You!💪✨

Thank you for spreading awareness. I've been following your channel for a while now, and this is the video I can relate to the most. The types of OCD I experience are checking, symmetry, and sensorimotor obsessions. I have these rituals that would take ages to complete, and if something went slightly wrong or if it doesn't feel 'right', I get the feeling something terrible is going to happen, and I feel uncomfortable in my own skin. And so I have to do it all over again. Sometimes I try forcing myself not to, but I always end up doing them anyway. My OCD is rather debilitating, as it affects my health and my social life. Most of my rituals take place before going to bed, and I often lose sleep time because I need to do these things over and over again. It was especially bad when I was younger. I had one of those digital alarm clocks. Nearly every night I would lose hours of sleep because of the blinking colon (:) and the numbers that were shown. I needed both the colon to be lit and a right feeling for the number shown before I could finally close my eyes and turn my back to the clock before I inevitably second-guessed myself and got the urge to check again. Back when I was in middle school, my OCD was at its worst. I was hyperaware of swallowing my saliva. Depending on where you look, websites will tell you the average human swallows from 600 to 2400 times a day. Now, imagine being hyperaware of it. The sensation, the motion, the need to do it over and over and thinking of something that should be automatic. It drove me crazy. I felt awful and disgusting because back then, I didn't know what OCD was. It was like I couldn't function like everyone else, and I felt terribly lonely. I was afraid people would notice my excessive and manual swallowing, and so I got paranoid. School was torture: endless hours of silence with the deafening sound of my deglutition ringing in my ears. My mom had major OCD when she was clinically depressed. That's a combo I wouldn't wish on anyone. It was so, so difficult for the whole family. It was painful seeing her like this. It was triggered by my sister getting scabies, so she had mostly cleanliness-related OCD. I hate it when people dumb OCD down to just 'needing to wash your hands extra hard'. My mom scrubbed her hands raw because of how many times a day she washed her hands. She needed my father, my sister or me to watch her accomplish mundane small things, like going to the bathroom because she needed to not touch the toilet lid. If she did (and even if she didn't, because the mind can be twitsed), she would break down. Anyone who has to deal with OCD has my compassion. It's difficult. Sometimes it gets worse, other times it gets better. I haven't dared seeking medication my own yet, because I don't want to inform my parents about it. I'm 18 and can see a doctor on my own, but my parents check my expenses and they would question me about it. Due to past trauma, I also hate drawing negative attention to myself, and needing medicine is included in being 'needy', so I have trouble getting past that. In any case, sorry for oversharing. I just needed to share my experiences. It's lonely, having OCD, and it's not exactly something you can just mention to friends because they simply can't understand.

Personally my OCD is partially perfectionism. In my mind I always want to say, do, think perfectly, and if things aren't perfect I'll try and try again until they are. Example: I'll open and close my door over and over until I see my room in an absolute perfect way. I'll lay down, get up and look at something and if it looks off I'll fix it, lay back down and get up to see it perfectly. I'll be thinking about something and if i think about it in an unorganized or imperfect way, I'll erase my thoughts and try thinking about it again. I'll constantly repeat actions till it's perfect. I can't have a hair on my floor or it'll bother me. I'll rewatch or re look at videos/pictures I post on social media to make sure it's perfect (I sometimes do this for hours sometimes) These things have caused me to over think alot. Causing me to obsess over things being perfect.

@@Black_Fox921 I had a numbers based OCD when I was younger, and I managed to reduce it by doing what was scary (e.g. I felt I had to do everything in an even number or it would feel bad, so I made myself do things in odd numbers). So it's not really ignoring the OCD, but recognising it and doing the opposite of what it tells you to do. I'm not going to lie, it is very very hard, but it does work. See if you can speak to a Doctor about taking medication too, some SSRIs can help with OCD, or (if available) if there is a therapist who can help guide you through doing the opposite of the OCD tells you to.

My brother has a SEVERE ocd-like illness that came on two years ago and has disrupted my entire family life, peace, and unity. From pumping the soap hundreds of times and wearing shoes all day in the house at the onset of this, to living every waking hour in a shower with running water while he watches a tv and my parents feed him like an animal in a cage and forced to serve his every demand or else he will break things, and harm himself, it’s been a horrific couple of years. He’s slightly better now simply because we managed to get him to live his life on the living room recliner but it’s still a terrible situation. Anything can potentially cause his “brain to swell” and the only way he can fight the thoughts and impulses is to scream and demand food and stuff. His screaming and grunting sounds like a wild animal being tortured... My sister and I have had to endure a lack of normal family activities and parental attention causing us both to sink deep into depression. Fortunately for me at least, enough time has passed for me to fully process it all and I have reached a point where I am just done letting this rule my life. I’m gonna be the best person I can be and walk through life with confidence and being carefree. I have become more sympathetic to other’s struggles after spending 2 years in an extremely stressful household environment. Sorry for this long ramble but I appreciate anyone who got this far

To be honest I do have OCD which I get it from my Mom's side of the family. I think that almost everyone has it on her side. Which came down to me, and one maybe two of my other siblings. I started showing symptoms when I was younger where I felt like I had to organize things. Like making the shoes be perfect from biggest to smallest and having my toys facing a certain way. I suffer from intrusive thoughts that form into someone getting hurt. Which scares me, so I go through with thw compulsive behavior, so that person wouldn't be harmed. I tend to keep my room clean. I lock the door when I let my dog outside, and when I bring him back in I relock it. Thinking that if I don't someone will attack my family, and cause harm. I sometimes clean dishes because a part of me says you need to clean it perfectly or else someone is going to get sick. I have more thoughts on things if I look at people and I feel ashamed when I do think of certain things. I tell myself that I'm a horrible person for even thinking of something that may involve me attacking, assaulting them in a certain way, or manipulating them. Which is why I get mad at people when they say "I know how you feel I have insane OCD!!!" Which just hurts because that person is just a perfectionist, and they feel like they have a choice. When people with OCD suffer from the disorder and feel like they cannot escape this torture of manipulative thougts and actions.... I just felt like going on a rant, sorry.

I’ve been diagnosed with OCD, Anxiety & depression for a few months now it started with me having intrusive thoughts of jumping out the window of the 21st floor. I have this urge to feel what it’s like falling and I got so scared not of the falling part but of the thought that I had. Sometimes I get a thought while watching tv or walking my dog. If’s like a translucent screen drops over my eyes and my intrusive thoughts just pops out of nowhere and I phase out for a second or two. I get disturbed but you can’t see it in my face I just look deadpanned or poker faced but inside im scared. So now everytime I have a thought that disturbs me I tell it to my bf so we can both keep up with my OCD and tell my psychiatrist after. It really helps to have someone especially at night when your alone with your own thoughts.

OCPD is now an accepted disorder. It is perfectionism that impacts a person's daily living abilities . OCD is a compulsion intended to cover or relieve some discomfort while Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder is about anxiety related to the compulsion directly For instance ocd might lead a person to clean to relieve feelings of lack of control while OCPD is often a response to trauma related to the perfectionism so like parents who abused the person when they weren't perfect

Having progeny with OCD has been quite the frustrating experience. It is not about achieving perfection, but instead acts of repetition are used to relieve anxiety. They are intelligent and have researched their illness themselves, but have concluded that any form of chemical treatment is not the answer and feel there isn’t any treatment to cure it so they just accept it and live with it. Add to this their stubbornness and the journey has been long and unproductive! Any suggestions guys?

I feel like the reason why I started to think that I have OCD is not because I have perfectionist traits but rather that I experience anxiety, obsessions, irrational 'just right' feelings escpesially within the realm of 'body sensation symmetry OCD' and the fact that i wash my hands over 50 times a day as well as using avoidance and rumination compulsions about contamination and wash my phone as frequently as I use it. There are also many other symptomatic experiences that seem like ocd not beacause they fit the fake stereotype but because I have obssesively amd compulsively researched and analysed OCD and the possability that I have it. The uncertainty of not being tested by a professional causes me so much anxiety and distraction and thinking what if im just a lying-narcissistic-self-victamizing-attention-seeker and therefore I can't be helped becuase theres nothing wrong but then why does it feel like there's something wrong, OR am I actually suffering from OCD and therefore I can recieve real reassurence and treatment.

I honestly hate it when people think OCD is like perfectionism, because it's the same thing with anxiety and depression, they think it's a quirk when it's pretty harmful. I have OCD and my life is just upside down. I take a lot of time on things. Like when I'm organizing dishes, I have the need to make sure the dishes of the same color of not next to each other. I don't know why, I just do. Or how, before using a restroom, I turn the shampoo bottles around. I just feel like if the front is facing me, there's something watching me. It's weird. And then there's the symmetry thing. When I touch one things with one side of my body, I have to touch it with the other side, same way same limb. It's annoying. There are other things I have stopped doing constantly, like cracking my fingers. I feel the urge to, but I have to stop myself. Although, I still can't stop myself from washing my hands constantly. Especially after I sneeze. Every time I sneeze, even if I don't sneeze into my hands, I have the need to wash my hands. They feel like they have germs on them when I sneeze. Alright, I'm done ranting. I just needed to let this all out. I apologize if you had to read this.

I've been told before that I am a perfectionist, but people are quick to blame my behaviors on my aspergers syndrome. I do hold almost everything organized in all possible ways I can see, but I don't do it for fun or relaxation. I usually do it because I feel genuinely discomforted when I see something out of order. I've found myself suddenly thinking "oh wait, how did I even get here? Why am I doing this?" multiple times. I don't know if this is common within the frames of aspergers syndrome, or something else.

Can someone help me out? I have been this way since forever. I want to do everything perfect, and if I mess up even 1 step, I will drop the whole work. And if I do it, I will do it in the best way possible, but everything has to be PERFECT. Lets take the example of studies. I couldn't study for like a year properly because I didn't have a "Proper" study room. I didn't have a table or anything. And also, when I do some chapters, I got to do it in the perfect chronical order. I mean, if I do some chapter, I gotta read it first, make detailed notes, learn it 2nd, then do questions. And due to this I take much more time than I should. And the fact is I can't do anything from mid, if i have to do it I will only do it from the beginning otherwise not. And also when Im like stressed about something I have to do, I don't do it but do something else. Also I wear specs, so i clean my specs like so many times, until it is PERFECTLY clear. And if my specs become even a tiny bit out of place, like even tiny, I get irritated so easily and keep fixing it. Do I have OCD?
