I love this two parter so much. The foreshadowing of Donna's fate, the tragedy and beauty of River, the world inside of CAL's mind, and the unbeatable Vasta Narada. Brilliant.
I'm an aspiring writer, and so I spend a lot of time thinking about what makes specific stories work and not work. Of all the episodes/2-parters, this is at the top of the list of ones that leave me just *speechless* at the sheer abundance of creativity and working parts that are juggled seemingly effortlessly. So much crackling, effervescent creativity, character/interpersonal development, mystery, world building, snappy pacing, the perfect introduction of a new and important character, heartbreaking moments, existential horror (the "ghosting," the face donation, the reality of Donna's world & children falling apart,) humour & adventure & lightness to counterbalance all that dark.... Even just the vashta narada as a terrifying creature that is also the ultimate low budget monster, relying entirely on imagination and that one visual & sound effect of the meat being demolished off the chicken drumstick, and could nevertheless haunt viewers long after the episode's over, when looking into the dark, when the shadows are cast a certain way, when the lights flicker and burn out - my god. It's almost obscene the amount of talent & skill going on here.
Alex Kingston (who plays River Song) is SUCH an amazing actress -- her facial expressions show how much she knows and loves the Doctor ... incredible when you learn that when she acted in this episode she (and everyone else) had no idea of the depth of her story with the Doctor, or even what the story was at all. She conveyed the depth of their connection so well in this episode.
This is still one of my fav episodes along with the first Weeping Angels episode and still love the Silence episodes....all three are so freaking creative.
Biggest problem with being a time traveller....meet the Missus, before you even loved and married her, so you don't know who she is. So sad for her and a mystery for you.

"Your screwdriver looks exactly like mine". I mean... it doesn't look _exactly_ like his, does it. Sorry, OCD. I get what he means. It's essentially the same albeit with a few accoutrements.
