What a wonderful presentation. I'm in awe of what these men achieved. My Great Uncle and his crew were also in Bomber Command and died exactly a month later on a sortie to the City of Cologne in June 1943. I've not forgotten them and the many thousands of men just like them.

The 617 squadron was a British marvel: our talent., our ability, our guts and bravery. There is little the Brits did abroad as so challenging to Nazi wishes on the streets to democratic subversion. The documentary shows how much preparation was taken to prevent surrender. The RAF were amongst the very bravest in the air.

I've paid my respects to the Dambusters who did not return, who lay in the Netherlands and Germany and Guy Gibson in Steenbergen.

In my hometown Bergen Norway there are Commonwealth graves and among them there is one crewmember from a Lancaster who bailed out from a Lancaster who took part on a night bombing raid on U boat pens in the city. The story is very sad ,they were hit by flak and they dropped the bombload over the sea to lighten the airgraft but sadly some bombs hit civilian houses and many people died. The poor tailgunner was the only one who got out of the aircraft but he hit a rooftop before his parchute deployed and he was killed instantly. The pilot was probably trying to land the aircraft in a lake just outside the city but they were all killed and the aircraft rested on the bottom of the lake,no bodies wre found. The only member of the crew who has a grave was the tailgunner.A very sad story with loss of many lifes.

Thank you for this, CWGC, an excellent reminder of the work that you do. My wife and I went on a ‘Silent Cities’ tour last year (Leger Holidays), behind the scenes with CWGC in northern France and Belgium - superb input from CWGC staff at every location. Also, at East Kirkby where the featured Just Jane Lancaster is, the public can go in and look round. For a fee you can get on the aircraft (and see how cramped it is inside) and for a bigger fee you can go for a taxy ride in the Lanc -a wonderful and very emotional experience.

Speaking from a Pilots point of view we pilots usually get all the credit , yes concentrating on the job as a pilot under fire is one thing but each and every one of the crew were going through trauma equally as fearful and in my mind when awards were handed out to a pilot of as in this case of 6 other crew members each should have been given the same medals . I knew one survivor ex tail gunner in 44 Rhodesia Sqdn , never spoke about it but it affected the rest of his life. He received no medals !!!!

As military operations go, this mission was exceptional. It has been mentioned the odds against them and what could go wrong, from the weather to mechanical failure. They were also racing against the clock to be ready for the very date. Its just a shame that modern britain and it's agenda to rubbish our past is allowed to flourish. Don't forget Joe McCarthy who was an american, heroes each and every one.🇬🇧

Gibson was a Wing Commander at the time not a Squadron Leader.
