the whole "nightmare world isn't scary because it reaffirms the real world is 100% safe" could've been easily remedied by having the world turn back to normal but the monsters remain without ceremony. Also if running away from the monsters was an organic extension of ordinary movement and exploration instead of having a dedicated running away sequence with independent mechanics.

+Matt Broadhurst I personally also find something really dissapointing about today's very passive, non-aggressive nature in horror. I get the idea. It's to make you feel more helpless and desperate, as Yahtzee put it, but I think the issue is that it's less like a confrontation of a problem and more like averting the problem until everything resolves itself. This can mean alot for a game. Saying that I don't stand a chance against this imposing threat is cool and all on-paper and mabye every once in a while in practise, but by tellimg me that I can just run from my problem forever, it gives a surprising level of comfort. That all my problems will go away the same way every time and that I don't even need to look at it as I run for the exit. Meanwhile, a game like Dark Souls, one that doesn't even strive for horror, will absolutely petrify me when I see a Titanite Demon on the far side of a narrow bridge, ensuring me that there is no other option but to fight the massive shit-bag with twice as much reach as me and nasty, neigh-insta kill attacks. Bolt on the far-off checkpoint and put my experience on the line, and Dark Souls just created a recepie for fantastic thrills. Meanwhile, even in somehting amazing like Amnesia; the Dark Decent, There's not alot of momentary crutial thinking in a game that relies on just the 1 trick. Instead of weighing my options of weather confronting the monster with a chance of death and loss of progression is worth it while trying to dodge it's efforts to kill me, I only have one natural course of action; run and hide. A tactic that will never fail me and is quite reliable. In most horror games, combat is un-reliable, because that makes it more thrilling when the game forces you to rely on said un-reliable mechanics. I dunno, that's just how I feel. I guess integrating a little bit of both will work. Something like a game, where you can kill enemies suddenly throws an unstoppable beast at you and you're forced to run away and hide from it for a few hours of playtime.

To be honest that wasn't the problem I had with the Nightmare World. The biggest problems thAT section has is A) The enemies are all the same and B) It is incredibly easy to get lost in some of those chase sequences especially if you don't have a guide. Gameplay wise it's adrenaline pumping but not scary which is a shame because this game looks fantastic on every system it plays on and even the sound effects create atmosphere. Overall though it's more of a thriller than a horror...not a bad one mind but not SH.

Aw man, that would have instantly made it terrifying if in the mid to late game, the raw shocks started appearing in the real world levels with no intro or spotlight.
@EbonyManta
@EbonyManta 4 года назад
Going to be honest, the Wii controls are janky enough that I appreciate that I won't be attacked while trying to photograph a ghost, or while I'm spending five minutes figuring out how to get out of a damn cop car. The way I might have handled it, though, is that there are "standard" enemies in the "normal" town, but they can be killed. During the "Nightmare" section, however, you're pursued by a single powerful, unstoppable foe a la Nemesis from Resident Evil. The more I think about it, though, the more I think that the "safe" normal world fits the style of horror the game was going for. It's very emotionally turbulent, what with finding all these echoes and ghosts and uncovering their sad stories, and I was actually pretty heavily affected by it at parts. It's also just generally unnerving, and I appreciate a good sense of dread in a horror game. The nightmare sequences pretty well encapsulate the feeling of just running in a blind panic, but I think they're the game's weakest feature. I wish there was a cheat or a NG+ feature to just skip them, they change nothing about the player's psych profile as far as I know, and they get more and more frustrating and unfair as you go on.

I imagine a game with this kind of story framing, every time you die, the main character says they lost track of the story. When you lose all your lives, it cuts to a game over screen depicting the main character getting their ass kicked from the listener, yelling "Stop losing track of the story!!"

I didn't mind this one. As long as you don't get hung up on what you think it should have been and try to enjoy it for what it is, you find it's actually kinda interesting. Granted, getting hung up on preconceptions going in is relatively fair, because it's reasonable to bitch about it not being much like a Silent Hill game when it's _named_ fucking Silent Hill, but otherwise, its failings aren't things like that. It makes no fucking sense at times, and is stuck up its own ass now and then, but when it clicks, it does so quite soundly. It's also way better at affecting the player on a psychological level than most usual horror games are. Resident Evil may be able to startle and gross the shit out of you, but it doesn't have an ice cube's chance in hell of affecting you beyond that.

@Poetabrasileiro

***** I've skipped Silent Hill one because i didn't liked the graphical design on that game. The controls were too clunky and the voice acting made the experience worse for me. I had to put down. Silent Hill 2 and 3 are the ones i actually started liking the series. That's why i don't care about Harry's destiny besides the fact that Heather lost her dad, the most important person in her world. You see, Heather is the character i actually relate to. And when they annouce Shattered Memories i actually look foward for it. And the result for a person that doesn't have ANY nostalgia for the first game on the series? It's awesome. I loved this run on Harry's personality and his search for his daughter. I felt the urgency to flee from the Raw Shocks in the nightmare sequences and as a Psychology student, the psychiatrists parts were neat. I just want to say that if you relate to Harry from the first game, i understand you feel invested in him. Bu that's your experience, and me relating more to James, Heather and liking Shattered Memories doesn't make it "Wrong". Also, on the point of continuing Team Silent's Work... The game really doesn't continue the storyline with the cult the first and third games were trying push toward us. Inspired by the Characters, they made a Re-run of the first game. And i can see why people bash in this game for it.... We all know how people react to change, don't we? -.-
@Brunn0121
@Brunn0121 9 лет назад
Vault Boy BR seeint it at this point of view, if a person never played any "original" silent hill game and has its first experience with this game, they all will react to it just like you, but when the others like me play it after experiencing the original story, this game just feels disappointing, not worth of a silent hill title... essentially youre quite right, having a different "feel" about a game doesn't make either you or me wrong about it.. its just that i hav that first experience back in 2001 when i first played silent hill 2, i loved it, then i looked for silent hill 1 and 3, and oh boy did it felt great... i wish i could erase my memories about these games so i could play them as if it was the first time... :( i want my childhood back

It also tripped over the psychological part....RED USE RED, red makes us feel more involved, makes us think about danger. Red is the color of blood, it means VIOLENCE. using blue in a horror game is like playing Mozart at a bar fight, it does not fit and it downplays the entire experience.
@icarusty6481
@icarusty6481 6 лет назад
They could have at least used a different hot color like orange or white. Cool colors tend to be calming. That being said, having a bar fight scene where Mozart plays in the background would be a pretty entertaining juxtaposition if done correctly.

I actually thought the blue color was a nice touch. It kind of reinforced the cold, lifeless nature of the nightmare world. The original Left 4 Dead did the same thing, although in fairness to them, they also desaturated the cool colors. Either way, it gives you a sense of relief when you start to see warm colors again... well, warm colors that don't belong to an enemy...

I think what he means is that having a face to attribute the evil to makes the horror feel like something that can be reasoned with. The cult may very well be the cause of it, but what Yahtzee's basically saying is that knowing about the cult makes the game a lot less effectively scary.

I really don't know what he's talking about though, as the cult was vaguely mentioned in the first game. The ending had anything to do with it, but revealed nothing much on it, and then it was the end climax of the game also. It's in SH2 as well, just about as much, but even more informs us on several details, whereas SH1 leaves us in the dark for the most part, making it vague. SH3's Claudia and Dahlia are what stereotype this aspect of the storyline.

About the American vs British accent thing: As far as I understand, it's quite a bit more complicated than just that one or the other is "the original accent". American accents tend to be more conservative than the stereotypical and/or standard English ones, meaning mostly London area accents and the RP accent. On the other hand, other English accents could be even more conservative than American English. I've heard that West Country accents tend to be particularly conservative. Probably depends on your interpretation, though. But hey, I've seen videos of Shakespearean pronunciation on RU-vid which seem legitimate. Check them out. Here's one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gPlpphT7n9s.html Also languages have phases of conservatism and progressivism/innovation so it can vary a lot. I've gotten the impression that American English has been going more toward the progressive side in the last hundred or so years, which would make sense considering all the new influences brought by the immigrants since the 19th century and the flourishing culture and economy (long term economy). Cultural hubs tend to be more likely to have a faster changing language. Kind of like they have faster changing fashions in general. Language is just another form of fashion can take, after all. That's also why the most rural, least fashionable or fancy sounding accents, the ones people are most likely to mock, are usually the most conservative ones and thus closest to the original. I'm pretty sure modern technology must be having some kind of an effect, though. I'm just not quite sure what. It does speed up some of the changes, vocabulary definitely at least, but it might also slow them down... (There must be studies about this. I just don't know any.) Anyway, theoretically, it would make sense if American English was changing more quickly than England's English now that the center of the Anglophone world has shifted there. Of course in practice it can go differently. (Anyway, it's not like England's become periphery all of the sudden so it might be that it'll keep changing just as rapidly and always be a little further from the old accent. Unless it fuses into the General American accent and disappears which is entirely possible. That's definitely a thing that modern technology does: accents are melting into each other. It starts with the rural accents usually but it might eventually spread. Though class accents would probably stick around longer, I'd imagine. Of course this is just my speculation... but it's educated speculation at least? I'm not an expert on English but I do study linguistics.) Oh and hey, remember that English trends did also spread to America over the years, they just did so slowly enough that the American accent could still go into its own direction. But the prestigious accent in England was also seen as such by the colonials (and thus imitated), they just heard it a lot less often. I imagine that if there was no connection, the accents would be really different nowadays, maybe to the point of being mutually unintelligible. Ireland, Scotland and Wales are probably an even longer story since it's not that long ago (historically speaking) that English was a minority language in those areas. That can lead to very contrary effects from what I've seen in similar situations. On the one hand, the local language tends to have a strong influence on the new language, creating a whole new accent... but on the other hand it can end up preserving a lot of features that would have otherwise disappeared.

1:21 This REALLY makes me want to know what Yahtzee thinks of the Cthulhu mythos then. The game and the pen and paper RPG specifically, as those cosmic horrors don't care/know about humanity and only screw with us if evil cults DO try to summon them/their lesser aspects/just conjure up dome shoggoths. And since Yahtzee mentioned shoggoths in a description of a throat infection he had lets me know he is aware of it and probably has an opinion, even if it's a lack of one/apathy.

I love how you refer to it as if we changed it and not our ancestors. Also I'm american and I have no problem understanding people with accents, mostly. There are a few that I find difficult, however English as it were, is a combination of many languages such as Roman, Greek, French, Spanish, and many more. So I'd say it needed a good simplifying if all it was, was a combination of mix-matched languages. So yeah, that is a thing.

0:58 proves that Yahtzee is, indeed, a nerd. Good on ya for actually havin' a brain under that fedora, mate! EDIT: Replaced semicolon with an actual colon*, cuz I was stupid enough to not hold shift. *: I mean the punctuation mark, not an ACTUAL actual colon.

Call it what you will; Yahtzee referred to it as a fedora in a review. I forget which one, but I think it was a few months ago. It was one where the protagonist had a similar... piece of headwear.

Archedgar Referring to a trilby as a fedora makes someone a 'tard? Wouldn't have known that. Tell me something: Doesn't nitpicking over the difference between two extremely similar pieces of headwear make you a pedant? :P

Still giving a recognizable face to an entity that had none though. Even if its behind the scenes or disturbingly evil, it still doesn't rival a faceless mystery that you cannot understand. Not understanding the situation and being left on the verge without comprehension is much more intimidating, which is why SH2 succeeded. An endless nightmare without explanation or understanding, there are no clear indicators of just WHY this is happening or where you are going until towards the very end.

That doesn't necessarily mean that he thinks they came out after Amnesia. He might just be saying he's played Amnesia, and doesn't want to experience something like it.

SH1 was brilliant in the same way SH2 was. Team Silent had said that all the otherworld in 1 was Alessa's mind and was her torment going amuck personally, but no, Escapist Magazine seems to think its all the "demons" coming from the god... SH2 did NOT invent this and ditch the prior storyline. And it's a wonder people think its the best in the franchise! Twin Perfect are very well right here. Too many people think SH2 is far different from the rest, when its not.
