Hey Dolls,
Today I am sharing a workaround for the Silhouette Portrait 3 and the autoblade that comes with the machine. Days later and the machine still needs this workaround in order to cut correctly. So if you have the Silhouette autoblade, I think this will help. Have A Gorgeous Day Dolls...Smooches : )

Your welcome! I’m just glad it helped. The frustration can be a bit much. It shouldn’t be that difficult because when it works, it works. But out of the box not having it cut is not ok. The most frustrating part is the issue seems to keep being directed at the consumers and not the other way around. Have a great rest of your day. Hugs 💐

Thank you so much for this. I cleaned the blade. Updated the software. Used mat. No mat. Didn’t cut deep enough! It looked like it just cut a thin layer on top but didn’t even puncture the vinyl!!! Thank you!

Hello hun 🥰 Yay so glad it helped. Also make sure your blade is correctly inserted and snapped all the way down. I went and got another Autoblade after a viewer recommended it was possible I had mine inserted incorrectly. I’m glad she pointed that out, it turns out I had it in the machine correctly but it does help me to always double check. Now after a third autoblade somehow this one works perfectly without any hacks. So I’m really confused as to why the other two aren’t working. But this hack works in a pinch if your blades still aren’t working. Have you tried the new blades they released? I have and I love them! Tfw. Big hugs 💐

Thank you for the video however I discovered that I was loading my mat on the very far left instead of where I was supposed to line the mat. I think that's what was inhibiting my auto blade from setting correctly. The minute I loaded my mat correctly it cut perfect hope that helps someone else remember there are various lines when we are aligning ormat so you have to align your mat on the correct line. Good luck everyone.

Thank you! I was so excited to get the Portrait 3. I have had the original Portrait (and Cameo) for over 8 years, but I wanted to be able to cut from my phone or a tablet. I spent hours last night and it worked once. Today is Christmas Eve so I would have had to wait days if I hadn't found this fix. This made my day!

THANK YOU! You just saved my sanity. I've had my machine for quite a while and had no issues until I had to replace a blade. Then it went to crap! I was so close to throwing the machine through the window. Thank you for your perseverance!

You’re welcome! It has to be something up with their blades. I have some that have worked and others well you know the issues. It’s definitely frustrating and leaves you stuck if your crafting and can’t run out to get a blade or worst, if it has to shipped. Glad it helped. Tfw. 💐

This video was an absolute lifesaver!! I'd gone through an embarrassingly large amount of vinyl, trying to just change different settings in the Silhouette Studio, but I thought the little taps before it started a job was it changing the blade size rather than resetting it back to 0! XD Tried manually changing it like you showed and it cut and weeded beautifully the first time!

So glad it helped. Another tip would be to possibly purchase another blade. I know it sounds costly to have to replace something that should work out the box, but I did find that my initial blade wouldn’t work while my others did. I purchased another of the same blade and didn’t have this issue. Kinda aggravating. Tfw. Hugs 🍁

Your welcome beautiful. So glad to have helped. I’m finding it seems to be down to the blade. It’s no coincidence that so many people are having the same problem. I reached out to Silhouette and I know they probably can’t stand me because nothing they suggested worked and I was more informing them of the issue so that so many people aren’t running into the same problem. It’s honestly not just user error. I purchased three of the auto blade and one works fine so long as I’m constantly double checking like one subscriber suggested that it’s locked in place. The others are still doing the motion to click into the setting but not actually adjusting. Silhouette released more blades tho and I love them.. if that’s of any help. Big hugs 💐

Yooooo it WORKED!! I love my silhouette but it is a pain in the ass sometimes. It was cutting just fine for me and then it stopped. I did what you said and now it's cutting again. THANK YOU!

So to know others are still dealing with this is just…wow. I don’t know if you have but like I’ve told others, buying a new blade also did the trick. I’m 100% sure the blade it came with was faulty. I love this little machine but working the kinks out at first, whew! Lol

I have this machine for 2 years now!! and I couldn't figure out how this was not cutting anything! Today with your help, I understood why! Now It cuts a lil' bit but not the whole vector. I still don't know why but with your help and honesty at least I have hope! ahahah thank you very much sis!

Thank you thank you!!! Tried my Silhouette Portrait 3 for the first time for print and cut. I'm a Cricut user. I couldn't figure out why my blade was changing. I manually changed it and the settings and viola. After spending a few hrs, it worked.

I'm so glad I watched your video. Got a good deal on the Portrait 3 from Amazon, so that's what I got for Christmas. I couldn't get the blade to cut properly until I watched this. I'm so surprised that Silhouette's materials don't cover this!

Just purchased and doing our first trial runs with cardstock. Having a similar problem with auto blade resetting to zero and not cutting but my husband noticed that we were placing the mat at the first raised "guide line" and that was causing the mat to cover the little opening that the auto blade jumps into to set the blade depth. You need to set the mat at the second "guide line" and it works perfectly.

Yes that is true. I touched on that in another video, unfortunately it will still happen if the blades are faulty etc. It’s happened to me. You also have to make sure the blades are “snapped in”. Luckily hubby caught that so you can get started with the fun. When you get the machines working they are awesome. I still can’t get used to the noise (a former Cricut user & those machines are quiet) but I am happy with my purchases besides the issues I’ve run into. Enjoy! 💐

This video helped soooo much!!! My blade wasn't adjusting to the settings automatically for some reason. I've checked that the blade is sitting in the lock multiple times, and it's fine but it still wouldn't adjust. Finding this video has been my saving grace.

I’ve repeated this multiple times but it’s possible some of the blades are faulty, it happened to me and a lot are stating correct loading of the mat is the issue when in fact it’s something you should check but it’s not always the source. So I’m glad this is helping.

I had to do so much trial and error and it came down to me figuring out my first blade was faulty, I did contact silhouette about the initial problem but they kept nicely stating it was user error lol It definitely wasn’t and the fact that so many people are running into the same issues and more proves that. Not including the fact that I can literally use two of the same blade in the machine and get different results. Tfw. Hugs 🍁

Since the controversy from Cricut, people started to buy the silhouette cameo 4 and it has become difficult to get the auto blade, so I thank you for this video so that when I get that elusive auto blade I’ll what to do, because I have seen videos on the cameo 4 having the same problems and therefore the ratchet blade has been recommended as a back up.

Your welcome beautiful. Not sure if you have been on the Silhouette website recently but they posted 3 new blades. They are manual and fit right into the Cameo 4 as well as the Portrait 3 without an adapter. I purchased all of them just waiting on delivery. So this may fix the auto blade shortage and usage issue. I have multiples of the autoblade, but all of the newer blades as well. They are the 2mm kraft blade, 1mm manual blade as well as the 2mm manual blade.

I have both and I use them both. If you think bigger projects will be made often I say return it and go with the Cameo 4. I do like my Cameo 4. I ended up investing in it because I wanted to make a lot of bigger projects. Meaning bigger mats. I hope this helps. Tfw. 💐

I had the same problems. The next problem I’m having I can get the Bluetooth to work on my IPad or IPhone. The cutting I finally got it to work after 4 months2. I was about to throw it out the window.

Hello💐 Omg 4 months?! Your patience is amazing. I literally had this thing packed back up after 2 nights. Lol I’m going to post my unboxing.. trust me I was not a happy camper. I had Bluetooth issues as well. Is your software the latest update? I had to play around with it. Talk about aggravating. Tfw. 💐

Great video even after 2 years! I just got the silhouette portrait 4 and nothing I’ve done seems to work. Followed your steps and I got some cut but not deep enough. Do I need to change blades? I’m confused at this point.

Glad it helped! Ok so triple check that the mat is lining up correctly with the lines on the machine, it’s possible you may need a new blade that’s what ended up being my issue, a faulty blade. Kinda sad this video is still relevant for the same issue. I only suggested the checking that your mat is lining up correctly because it was suggested to me and while that wasn’t the issue for me, others stated it helped them. I hope this helps. 💐

Do you have any tips on how to get the portrait 3 to recognize the register marks??? I have spent 10 straight hours attempting to get the mat lined up correctly and the register marks to be recognized....

Hello. I haven’t printed anything as of yet to use. As soon as I do, I will share my results. I’m sorry your having issues. Trust me I get it and it’s beyond aggravating. From what I hear, the Silhouette machines need additional light to pick up the registration marks. I’ve seen most users placing flashlight or some sort of additional light above the machine so that it can read the marks. I am hoping not to have to do that because I don’t for my Cricut Makers. Tfw and I hope I can help remedy this as soon as possible. 💐

Definitely not you. These machines are so finicky. I have the Cameo 4 and the Bluetooth doesn’t work at all. My iMac recognizes it as a Bluetooth connection but the silhouette software will only connect to it, if I have it plugged in with the USB. 😒 I’ve tried everything.

@@divadollflawless same with the portrait and this laptop I have! BUT I did the tricks and it worked!!! I cannot wait to start really cutting out things and having some creative fun!

Your going to love it. I use the print and cut feature a lot and it’s great. I just close the door and go away until after it cuts lol they are so much louder than my Cricut machines. 🤣

Hiiii I’m struggling with this Danm machine. I’ve been struggling with it since June and I can’t return it unfortunately. What sheeting do u use to cut vinyl ?

Hi hun. I haven’t used vinyl with it as of yet. I use it for a lot of my paper projects. But when I do, I would start off using their auto settings since I use the autoblade. What is giving you an issue?

Not sure if this helps but I always do a print test and I change the force and speed to: Blade: 2 Force: 10 Speed: 5 (I went and checked/why i edit my comment) And it changed the game for me. I was literally about to return mine, after ruining a mat, wrecking my blade, and a ton of vinyl-at first it was just scratching it the Holo vinyl not cutting through. I bought different vinyl waited a week for it to come, then with regular matte adhesive removable vinyl it at first cut all the way though my mat-grrr, and then i watched a yt video and since it was someone using a cameo 4 in silhouette studio, I tried her suggestion and to be honest it was a hit or miss-but only if I try Holo vinyl or Prem. Vinyl. But if you want to be able to cut on black matte or white matte (these are the only ones I’ve tried that successfully cut) then try changing the cut settings and when you are choosing your material type: either choose vinyl matte or whatever type you have. Or just enter the “add new type” and enter the settings I put above. I’ve done both and it works both ways. But like I said I cut through my first mat and I’ve bought a new one and I’m way more hesitant to cut now!!??!! All I know is that it shouldn’t be such an elusive process to cut with the cutting machine!! But it is!!

How often do you have to replace the blade and is there any third party blades?

Hello. It depends on your usage. If you notice your blade seems to be cutting things incorrectly, meaning maybe your cuts aren’t as sharp, it could mean the dull is blade. So you would need to replace it at that point. Personally I haven’t had to replace any of my blades. Keep in mind, my machines aren’t heavily used. It all comes down to the user and usage. I’m sure there are third party blades but again, I personally haven’t used any to be able to recommend. I hope that helps.

Hi!Yes,I manually adjust it to 3,but when it starts cutting it goes back to 0 and cut is not visible..I am crazy with this machine.What should I do?

Hello. I know this might sound weird but double check that your mats are aligned correctly. I did another video addressing this because it kept being suggested to me and even tho it wasn’t the issue for me, it does help others. If that doesn’t work, I would suggest one of two things. 1. get a new blade and see if the one you have is possibly faulty (that ended up being my issue) or 2. contact Silhouette. It’s a shame so many are still running into this same issue. I hope your issue has been resolved by now but if not, fingers crossed one of those suggestions helps. 💐

Hello. Ugh. I know how frustrating it is. Have you tried another blade(mine was faulty) I contacted Silhouette but they said it was user error. Clearly it wasn’t. It ended up being a faulty blade for sure.

I’m still having trouble, I changed it manually but it says wrong tool detected when I go to cut the design.

Hello. Is it possible you have a faulty blade? I’m asking because it happened to me. After replacing my blade, I made sure it was pressed all the into the blade holder, I believe it makes a slight clicking noise. Also make sure your mat isn’t placed into the machine incorrectly. I hope this helps.

Hello. I would contact the company and let them know your having an issue with their product. It sucks and I know the frustration all too well but I really can’t recommend anything else outside of contacting Silhouette about their product. 💐

In my opinion..that’s what I think it is most times. I’ve commented multiple times suggesting viewers get new blades. I actually purchased new blades and they worked. The company suggested user error even with me showing them the problem in video format. Turns out, it’s not user error and couldn’t possibly be the reason with so many people still having the same exact issue. As long as the mats are lined up correctly with the lines on the machine (I posted another video about this) the machine should cut correctly if not, the blades are faulty. I still have mine and have not had any issues since switching out my blade. Others have tried that and still had issues. Either way, Silhouette needs to address this problem.

I am losing my mind trying to get my portrait 3 to cut 😮😡. My blade shows it is on 0 and I can’t get it to move despite clicking it as you show. It stays on 0 Thoughts? Thank you!

Hopefully by now you’re up and running or have contacted Silhouette. The only other option I can think of would be to get another blade. I feel the blades are faulty because plenty of other customers are continuing to have the same issue. Hope that helps! 💐

Hi luv. I would contact the company. Our machines shouldn’t need “hacks” to work. Even I had to reach out to them & the fault still ended up being with them & their product. Either the machine works out the box as intended when purchased or return it. That’s my advice. 💐

Hi hun. I don’t necessarily know how to pin point the direct issue. My suggestions would be to check your settings, go to the website and see what suggestions they have for cutting glitter htv. Definitely contact Silhouette directly, it’s their machine and can guide you through any and all steps. If your blade is cutting other materials I would think the blade is fine but possibly the blade force needs to be adjusted? Hope that helps.

Soooo frustrated with our Portrait 3. It is truly a piece of GARBAGE and I have a VERY disappointed 14 year old daughter. Worst Christmas present EVER. 😢😢😢😢😢

I would definitely contact Silhouette to address whatever issues you’re having. They honestly don’t have the best customer service tho. But maybe get a refund on your machine and try out a Cricut. They come with their issues as well but in the very least, Cricut has an actual person you can speak too. Silhouette not so much.
