I was working for Walgreens as a store manager and oooooooh boy were they playing damage control at store level. They spent the previous 3 years drastically cutting budgets and purchasing power to afford the payments they were making to Theranos. Then when sh*t went down, upper management doubled-down on blaming stores for the massive loss of money. Which led to more cuts. When Theranos started up it was just after the success of Facebook, RU-vid, Instagram, Apple devices and Amazon etc. No one wanted to miss the next big thing so they just jumped in on anything with the hopes that one thing would turn them from wealthy into people who sleep on piles of money every night and paper their walls with bank notes. Most of these people knew little about medicine so would have been easily fooled by jargon and a pretty face and wouldn't have seen the need to do more due diligence than for any other "tech" company. So, the county sheriff declares that there would be zero tolerance for speeders, but because they drive fast sports cars, the police can't catch up to them. They put their heads together then, and come up with the genius idea to start arresting passers-by on the sidewalk, because if they can never get to their cars, they can't drive over the speed limit. It was a policy based on (allegedly) good intentions, executed in the most bone-headed and counter-intuitive way possible.

I was like, there’s no way in hell that it’s legit, it’s a scam. Blood tests are not collected in a variety of colored tubes just for shit and giggles, there’s a reason and for a lot of tests, they’re not interchangeable. Most chemistry tests are not even done on whole blood and a single drop would certainly not be enough for a comprehensive metabolic panel. Also basic laboratory test only take 20 - 30 mins, the ones that takes a week for a result to get are usually those specialized tests like DNA testing or tests that are uncommon and only performed at send out/reference labs and only done on certain days.

Also the most common lab tests can easily be completed within the span of this video.

You can definitely take college classes in prison. The prison I went to was in close proximity to Fairmont University and they had instructors come for classes. They didn’t offer anything that would get them a degree though. It was one of those things that you can take classes to get enough credits for a general studies degree.

absolutely. Because a lot of people in prison don't have any skills or qualifications- hence they found their way to prison. It gives them something to do when they get out t reduce the risk of reoffending

The home she was renting is known as Green Gables, and it is one of, if not the, most expensive home in one of the most expensive areas in the US. I was under the impression that she did not own it, but I could be . The property has multiple homes on it, and sits on 75 acres. So the high price has some other factors to it. She was living in one of the smaller homes on the property, but I'm sure it was still pretty nice.

Yeah, mountain lions exist here. It’s one of the consequences of being an area that was only relatively recently settled by Europeans: we still have wilderness and wildlife here. They usually don’t eat people though. Usually.

I live in Ohio, and at least for some tests, a lot of results of a blood test can come back within days, although I have an app to view the results. Oftentimes, I end up seeing the doctor that ordered a routine blood test well after I actually get my copy of the results.

It still bothers me that she wasn't tagged with any crimes related to the patients. They took samples that were sent to them for testing and sent them to traditional labs despite knowing the samples sizes were too small for traditional testing. How is that not reckless endangerment of some sort? I'm assuming they never informed the requesting doctors about this, so they provided information to the patients in good faith that the testing was done properly.

Chronically ill human here, when trying to work out what's wrong with my body, I've had a couple of blood tests that took a few weeks - a month to come back. One of those cost like $300 (notable because I'm Australian and its the only blood test ive ever paid for) and took the staff multiple phone calls to work out how they were supposed to do the draw and what it was even testing for. ✨️the more you know✨️

The ironic thing is that some of the things she actually claimed has since been invented. But with tests of this kind it's kind of like with gun production. You can make a list of what you want in the product but you can never get all of it. So for example now we have the ability to run a frankly ludicrous amount of simultaneous tests on a small amount of blood (with the right equipment, which not many hospitals have fully implemented yet) but you still can't just prick someone in the finger and use a drop of whole blood for every kind of analysis. Also, and more importantly, getting your finger pricked hurts more than having your blood drawn from a vein on average, and for longer. So I don't really understand what the benefit of getting less blood and potentially needing to get pricked more times is supposed to be.

It's important to note that Holmes was always intentionally defrauding folks. Her concept simply never would have worked due to basic human biology and her original advisor at Stanford informed her of this issue. Rather than take advice from an expert in the field, Holmes decided to go scam as many folks as she could. She was trying to drum up investment by lying about her tech already working way back before anyone had much heard of her. She went so far as to go on a radio show, Tech Nation, aimed at investors back on 21 April 2005. The transcript and original audio is still available if you Google for it. I'd link it but links can be weird on YT. In this interview, however, she claimed that her product was "going into, sort of, the production phase". The interviewer confirmed with her to be clear she was "almost in manufacture" and Holmes said, "Oh, absolutely." For those who've never dealt with this, the production phase, aka manufacture, is the final phase after all testing and clearance. It's literally the part of a product lifecycle where you figure out the manufacturing line setup, not "figure out how to make the product work". This was an obvious lie to anyone who knew anything about human blood testing but Holmes was mostly avoiding those folks because she knew they'd see the lie for what it was. She was never not a fraud. Period.
