I'm delighted that Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar for this movie. She was only 21 when the movie was filmed, yet she didn't look it. She also infamously fell when collecting her Oscar at the awards, which she gracefully laughed off.
13 years ago I checked myself into a clinic for severe depressions. What i learned in the 4 months was that most patients simply accepted each others behavior. And since then i find myself most relaxed when i talk to others with mental health issues. Simply because i dont have to sugarcoat anything out of fear i scare them to death. So i'd say the movie, with some artistic license, was pretty good and relatable 😀
This really is one of my favorite rom-coms. It doesn’t do jokes or set up funny misunderstandings; it’s just funny because the characters are genuinely funny and quirky and blunt. It’s also a romance that doesn’t follow the normal romantic trajectory. It’s almost like they know they’re attracted immediately but spend the rest of the movie trying to get themselves out of their own way to realizing that. Especially Pat. You should also check out the book because it gets into a bit more of their backstory plus gets in Pat’s head a bit more since he narrates the whole novel.
I really hated the novel. If I recall correctly, Pat has something else wrong with him there and it causes him to think and act like an obnoxious twelve-year old throughout.
I'm glad you noted the camera shot on the mom during the dance. It's just a short but poignant moment and her facial reaction says it all. I also really love DeNiro's performance in his "Don't F*ck this up" speech at the end with Pat.
My son worked for the Nestle commercial division at the time this movie was being filmed. Basically he delivered coffee and juice to restaurants and other such places. One of the places he delivered to was the restaurant depicted in the film. As he was unloading the order from the truck Bradley Cooper walks by. My son says hi. Bradley stops and they talk about the Eagles. Bradley grew up near the restaurant in Jenkintown PA which is basically Northeast Philly. They chatted for a good half hour before Bradley said his goodbyes. It seems that they had just filmed the scene we see in the film and he wanted to relax before the next shoot. My son had nothing but good things to say about Bradley. He is still pissed that he missed Jen who had just left before he got there. The Restaurant is also in an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri.
What I think is most interesting about this movie is how they don't pigeonhole that these are the characters that have mental struggles, and these are the other people who are perfectly fine. They show basically everyone having various types and levels of problems and dealing with it in various ways and with varying levels of success.
I always wanted to learn ballroom dancing, but it was really Strictly Ballroom that kicked me and my sisters in the collective keister to start learning. And we love it!
Everyone's acting feels so candid, I admire it. The movie vibe and topic is really... unexpected? It's unique in a way that it sticks with me year after year.
*Let's talk about the elephant in the room: the dad is crazy, too.* It's not just his obsession with the Eagles. There's the remote controls, the numbered empty envelopes, the rubbing of the handkerchief. His possibly violent past. If crazy isn't hereditary, the son likely "learned" it during early childhood from watching his father.

You don’t “learn” mental illness. It is inherited, but genetically. In my family, it skips around from individual to individual, but it’s it’s in the bloodline

Neuroticism and fixation on superstition can be aspects of bipolar disorder, so yes, Pat’s dad probably was also undiagnosed, but Pat inherited it by dint of nature, not nurture

I love how the dance routine is a metaphor for the chaos and swings they feel emotionally. Zero to sixty in just a turn. Also, I love this movie because it connects for men and women. Kind of breaks the mold of the endless romcoms.
Yup, I believe that was her first feature, and it shows what a good, powerful actor she actually is - even at that young age. She's been turned into kind of a pop tart since then, but if anyone gives her the chance, like in this film, she's got the chops. Winter's Bone is great, as is this one.
That movie was incredible. Grim, but incredible. A lot of movies feel like they're full of movie stars. That movie feels like it's full of people that actually exist.
For some reason this will always be one of my favorite movies. Just the fact that they show that so many people have issues whether mental or emotional, everyone is going through something. Plus jen law in the movie just will always be my favorite role of hers.
Of all the different aspects of this movie, I relate to the scene where they're comparing medications at the dinner table the most. Not because I'm on medication, but because you can tell that they're so happy to finally meet somebody who understands them. Surrounded by fake, judgmental people telling you how broken you are, and suddenly here is this other person who is just like you. Someone who not only doesn't judge you, but who appreciates all your "broken" parts.
That diner scene where she says "..because im so much CRAZIER than you!" and then she.. well..goes crazy, is what sold me on her being not just good but a great actress. She killed it in this movie.
Jennifer and Bradley were soon reunited along with the same director in the excellent true crime drama (with humor) "American Hustle" (2013). Robert De Niro also pops up and Christian Bale co-stars along with Amy Adams. Check it out. Very entertaining. All were Oscar-nominated. Excellent soundtrack.

The scene where Jennifer Lawrence tells De Niro about the Eagles and Phillies scores during the winter of 2008 is one of my favorites. I'm a Philly guy and remember that season (the Phillies won the World Series) and the Eagles scores that were mentioned actually happened. I vividly remember the Dallas game they won 44-6 as they were up 27-3 at halftime, forced a fumble and recovered it for a 73-yard touchdown and then, that same quarter, forced another fumble for a 96-yard touchdown. I don't recall ever yelling that much (hate the Cowboys!).
The scene where Tiffany tells him how her husband died is just gut-wrenching. The way she tells him and then brings it around to show him that's a feeling... wow
I have watched this movie at least a dozen times. It’s one of my all time favorites. The acting was sensational. There are so many layers to this movie. Things that you notice in subsequent times watching. Like how Lawrence wears her wedding ring the whole movie until the very last scene when she’s drinking from the cup. She has taken it off finally. Cassie please watch it again on your own. It’s so worth it. I think I’m gonna watch watch it again right now lol
The scene that shows the mom watching Pat is my favorite scene too! The expression of her face was perfect. It was the love and pride of seeing who your child has become. Because that was such a pure moment of Pat’s life. Like he said in the letter, he had been stuck for so long and on the meds, and fighting, and I feel like during the dance with Tiffany it was like seeing Pat clearly, just himself, without all the other baggage. The song was such a good representation of their personalities.
I finally got diagnosed bipolar with severe depression and anxiety 7 years ago. That's why I love this movie so much. I see where Pat is coming from. I took my meds for a little while, but the medication never worked, so I haven't taken it in all that time. Bipolar people aren't all dangerous. I'm introverted in real life and not off the wall like Pat can be.
I’ve seen many movies in the theater but seeing this film the first time was the only time that was an official screening. Only I didn’t know it was until it was over. Someone gave me a form to answer questions and share thoughts about the film. I’m bipolar and this is a very personal film for me. When it was over I was pretty emotional. And when I was asked to write about this, of all films the films I had seen in my life, I was shocked but I was grateful because it was a special film and a special experience for me. It felt right that this film would be the one.
I had a (very bad) job once at a place practically across the street from the diner (the Llanerch Diner in Upper Darby) where the “non-date” happened. There’s a plaque at the booth.

I suffered with addiction, mental health issues including depression and PTSD and a codependency in love as I struggle through my divorced. This movie continues to give me hope and was so well written let alone I’m from Philly and lived all these games and moments. Thank you for doing this. It meant a lot
This is probably one of my top 20 favorite movies. Because it shows how someone can get stuck in thinking that they love someone and not see the things right in front of them. Until something shocks the routine. And How both of them had their issues, but they were able to compliment one another in a way that helped each of them. It also shows the family who cares about him. And tries to help him even when he can't see the problem that he really has and the things he's doing that are making it worse. And how everybody has their own issues. Twelve out of ten definitely recommend❤
Man when this first came out it really rocked me, I saw it a few times, and loved it loved it. I feel like watching Cassie see it for the first time brought me back to those feelings. I've got mental illnesses, they have been a struggle my whole life, and this was the first move where the two characters spoke openly and plainly about it, about being on meds, about being in therapy, about having struggles and trying to find what will work for them to recover and heal - with *no shame.* Even though the family at the dinner table was awkward, and didn't know how to respond - just like my family, just like most people who've never been exposed to mental illnesses - the two of them understood each other, empathized and *related* to each other, and it was amazing. Of course I'd love to have as gorgeous and amazing a woman literally chasing me on my runs, and working all these machiavellian schemes in hopes I'll fall in love with her, that's the wish fulfillment part, but the fact that his whole family has, instead of excluding him, had to shuffle around to make room for him, to not just care or hope but also to want to know and understand him, and what is good for him specifically in his recovery - such a wonderful, wonderful ending that any of us would wish for.
Hope you're doing alright. Yeah the self awareness the characters had about their issues was refreshing. I think over time they could help DeNiro's character as well.

His silver lining was Tiffany. She is a wonderful woman. She is the opposite of what he wanted before Nicki. But realized Tiffany is better for him. Like he said.... "I was stuck" he was living for an illusion. Tiffany went out of her way to give him something to do that did not involve Nicki. That's a therapy. His bird with a broken wing speech, was like how Tiffany felt for him lol She was mending him thats why she smirks. He isn't crazy. He is just stuck in the past. Love this film and love your reaction.
You know, I knew Cassie would love it, but seeing her commentary in realtime, as well as her embracing the nuance of how complicated life and love can be, took the experience of watching a movie I've seen countless times to a whole 'nother level. Can't wait to vote for this in the 2024 Poppies!
@Popcorn in Bed Great reaction. 👍 First, let me just say…I was diagnosed Bipolar 2 at age 25…almost 2 decades ago. It runs in my family…as most mental illnesses tend to have a genetic component. My diagnosis was later corrected to a much more accurate one of Bipolar 1 at age 35, after I was hospitalized for 6 days following a suicide attempt. I had spent that entire 10 years in between diagnoses, on & off, painfully trying over a dozen different medication combinations, bouncing from different therapists & doctors, etc., all while ruining close relationships, losing jobs, struggling financially & emotionally, etc. Now, possibly one of your (everyone’s) biggest misconceptions…it is NOT something you suffer with your whole life. Almost every person truly suffering from BP is not diagnosed until their mid-to-late 20s…and typically they’re diagnosed prior with either general depression and/or some form of anxiety. Typically women are diagnosed at a slightly younger age than men…another interesting little fact. I theorize that it simply boils down to the simple truth that women are more likely to seek help sooner & be a bit more honest about their feelings…but that’s just pure speculation on my part. This film VERY accurately depicts so much about exactly what it’s like to live with Bipolar, especially the uncontrolled manic episodes. It’s eerie how accurate and REAL it is, in fact, to the point where it’s almost a full blown trigger to even watch certain scenes. I think it is a very important film to show anyone living with BP (and even other issues like OCD) or even to show a loved one of someone who has been diagnosed…not to mention it deals a bit with the stigmas we still face. The acting is phenomenal, the writing is clever, and while it might certainly be dramatized to a degree, it still rings true enough in so many ways that it definitely helps more than it hurts. How do you feel about Homeland, where the lead character is a CIA analyst struggling with bipolar? I was always curious to know if her scenes were realistic?
@@rageagainstmyhatchet It’s been years since I’ve seen it, but honestly, in my opinion Homeland was very inaccurate 8 times out of 10. I think the character portrayed had symptoms and behaviors that were certainly over-exaggerated for dramatic effect more than they ever cared about showing an accurate depiction of the mental illness. Which is fine, of course. But. The way that character displayed such reckless, extreme manic tendencies…almost ALL of the time…with very little down turn. It just was not always realistic or believable. She clearly veered much more toward the manic side, and had very few depressive or even mixed episodes, and her pathology seemed to imply a more complex diagnosis that was never fully realized…I’d love to see an actual psychiatrist examine that show’s validity (I’m far from qualified to offer more than an opinion). However, one of several things they DID get right, in my opinion, was to show the way she struggled with stability due to self-medicating…now THAT is something that happens a lot, often due to medication struggles. Until people are lucky enough to find, and settle into, their own proper and suitable medication “cocktail,” a lot struggle with self medicating. Which can vary from overuse or underuse of prescriptions or even street drugs, going on & off their prescribed meds, etc. Then of course supplementing with alcohol and illegal drug abuse is common, too…along with other addictions and self destructive tendencies, many of which were shown on Homeland…

This is the greatest film. Lawrence owns every second. She's the reason Oscars were invented. The scene her and DeNiro side by side make the bet that sets the third act in motion is the moment JLaw became a star.

I was mentally frazzled after a twelve hour shift. The torrential rain outside was pouring through a leak in my roof. Didn’t have much time to scan the telly schedule before tackling the flood. Sounded rubbish. Couldn’t see Bradley Cooper pulling it off. Decided to give it until the 1st ad break before almost certainly ditching it. By the time of the dance competition I was pacing (squelching) the floor, screaming for them to get the 5! I have since read the book and loaned/gifted copies to numerous friends.
I'm bipolar but wasn't diagnosed until well into my 40s, too late to save my marriage, my career, my relationships with my son, my brother, friends... I'm now on successful meds and no longer abusing substances, etc. This movie does a fantastic job! 💯
Here where I live, the title of this film would be something like "The Good Thing About Life". What I learned from watching this movie is that the good thing about life is dating Jennifer Lawrence.
Cassie, I loved your reaction, you are so hopeful and upbeat. The doctor showing up at the game was a great moment of comradery and humor. I love the underdog romance in this and I love Jennifer Lawrence when she is cooky. She was great in the hunger games and Bradley Cooper was great in a movie called "Unlimited" also with Robert DeNiro.
This movie is soooo good. And it’s hard to explain why. A lot of times where “A-List” actors are in movies it’s hard to get lost in their characters. But in this movie I 100% believe that Bradley Cooper is Pat and I 100% believe that Jennifer Lawrence is Tiffany.
I’ve put off watching this film as I’m bipolar and was concerned it would be a little too close to home. My experience is of course different to Bradley Cooper’s character, but I recognised the struggle. Thank you for reacting to this film. It was the only way I could watch it, and I’m glad I did.

You should also watch Winter's Bone she got nominated for that one too. I don't think there are any reactions to it. Silver Linings Playbook one of my favorites though.
Love this movie. After a couple of watches, you realise there must be a lot of stuff happening thats not shown to get them together. They both should have won oscars , De Niro as well .
I love this movie so much! The portrayal of the characters played by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence ring so true. 😊 I love that despite the fact that everybody around them were judging them, they were all flawed, but that didn't stop Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence's characters from trying to grow together as friends. I love how BC and JL actually owned up to their crazy, which helps show that they didn't have any walls built up between themselves. There are so many things to learn about from them about how to accept who you are and still try to make the best of your situation. Just wish BC had won the Oscar for this alongside JL.
I watched this some years ago, and thought: "this feels relatable". I was going through my third depression, so it wasn't so surprising. Fast forward seven years, and I was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. Turns out it was even more relatable than I understood at the time. As others have commented: It takes some artistic licensing with enhancing the emotions, but it does get a lot of things right.
Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have such a good chemistry, every movie with both together is a hit And Bradley Cooper was robbed of an Oscar so many times.... but his own films are also terrific
I like this movie but there are two things that I love; 1) that they show how everyone deals with different types and levels of mental and emotional issues and 2) that this whole movie sets you up to expect something truly bad is going to happen but then they give you a happy ending. I think it’s really important for people who can’t see the happy ending to know that it’s still possible!

Also, I believe the best speech of the movie was delivered by Pat's father (DeNiro). That was one of the most important moments of Pat's life and his father wanted to make absolutely sure that he knew it.

It has such a classic ending scene (When Tiffany reads Brad's letter confessing his love) it could just as easily be from the 50's. I absolutely love when Tiffany pops the top off the beer she grabbed and let the cap hit the floor as she takes a swig. (after impressing Brad's Dad)

I audibly gasped when I saw you reacted to this movie. It's my favorite Bradley Cooper movie. Oddly, I don't remember any of the film until I watch it again, and, wonderfully, every scene comes flooding back to my mind. God, this movie is amazing.
