Just installed STL010 on my 2016 6L80E really dropped the trans. temp 50 degrees today trans never got past 127 degrees I had the older thermostat that ran it to 194 degrees so big improvement
Installed this on my new to me 2017 Silverado with 46,000 miles about a year ago. My transmission temp runs at an average of 145 after the install. And the highest I've ever seen it was 170 on hot day and running up a 7 mile hill on PA turnpike 😊
Thanks! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth I Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Just gonna throw in a comment, this summer it was getting to 100-110 in Texas. On longer drives I was sitting between 170-180 with it maybe going to 190 if I would get stuck in traffic. I just went back to these because we experienced our first cooler days of 60 and it was taking a while for it to get over 100 but after about 20 minutes I am sitting at 130. This does work great if installed properly!
yeah it’s dictated based off of the ambient temperature outside. So if it’s really hot outside, you’re still gonna be on the 180 range which is fine. The key is you have fluid flow constantly now.
I’ve got a 16 suburban with same bypass and i put this in on my recent purchase of the suburban back in January and literally just went 1200 miles without any temperature above 151 degrees while in traffic from New England to Florida It’s 90 degrees out here and average temperature for tranny is 144-151 running local driving no greater than 50 mph
Very informative, although I could have done without the rock concert, which added nothing helpful or good. Otherwise, great. An additional note: Not all 2014's have the 194 thermostat. My Tahoe is an early 2014, built 09/13. It does not even have the thermostat block and does not run excessively high temps. It looks just like a 2012-13 set-up. Apparently there was a change sometime after introduction of the 2014's. Thanks for the video.
@Global Transmission Parts I ordered mine from u guys right away when I saw these results. I have a 21' Silverado with a 6L80 and it got up to 205° F. All I did was wheel it in the hills I don't even tow with it. The RU-vid community saves the day again. And thanks to G.T.P. just waiting for shipping.
Think Ill be getting one of these for my 17 Sierra… seems like the way to go. Does the slight leak of fluid shown in the video pose any issue or need to be topped off again?
At 04:30 I explain checking the level. It’s always a good idea to check level and add if needed. Thanks for watching! Remember GM makes one for these trucks as well now because it was such an issue.
Thanks Bob. Hey, I don't have access to a lift, to lift my truck. Can I use ramps, without all of the transmission fluid leaking out, when I take off the thermostat block?
It goes in exactly how I had it built. I just didn't show myself actually sliding it in the housing. The product comes with detailed instructions this was just a fun video showing where it goes and how it works. With some install tips. GM actually makes a factory replacement now fixing this issue. Good luck!
@@Bobsgaragetech I'm definitely getting this done to my 2014 asap.. about two years ago.. my tran died on me and it was due to the torque conv fragging out from the heating issue.. $4200.. new torque and reman trans from the Chevrolet dealership.. 30K mile/3 year warranty.. so I got that at least.. lol.. Thanks, Robert!!.. CHEERS!!
Yes sorry.. was new at filming and couldn’t get the camera set up so I could use two hands and I only had limited time.. I recommend making sure there is trans fluid on everything for lube. and a little PB blaster would also help..
@@Bobsgaragetech I PB blasted a pool over the snap ring for a few minutes before I even went to remove it lol. Came right off at 70k miles, I guess I got lucky. I am considering getting the new valve upgrade Because the operating temp is taking extra long to reach due to the whole reservoir being cycled. I think the new valve cycles at 150F and will need new lines (I have QD) but I think its a better option for reaching optimal operating temp
I have tranny cooler and it's a 6l80e looking to do this it runs at 185 rite now about planning on doing a lot The question is how much farther is this really going to extend the life of the transmission there really only good for about 150 200,000 If you change your fluid every 40,000 mi as far as I know One would assume this should extend the life slightly especially if you're telling If you never tell or haul anything this might not be a necessary mod for you I'd like to know what the Camaro runs at
You’re the man! I have a 2015 Yukon and it doesn’t have the 10mil bolt holding the lines in, you are the only person to mention this, thank you I wish I had found your video first!
Shouldn’t matter to much. You might lose slightly more fluid. Ether way I would be setting the fluid level after anyways.. I go over that in the video at the end.
Definitely gonna do this to my sierra before I pull my car with it! Can't believe that gm put a thermostat on these transmissions. Would make alot of sence that the heat they make could be a cause to some of the problems they have with the expansion and contraction of the materials and the fluid breaking down faster with the heat
I love the way you are thinking! I thought the same! It’s 115 in Phoenix the last couple days and I have been staying around 170 after driving 30 mins! Let me know when you tow with it, I haven’t towed yet.
@@sbc_jake_9677 , I heard from a YT video someone saying that the reason the original thermal bypass valve was designed to open for cooling at 194 °F (or 90 °C) is due to Federal Government regulations to get higher mpg. The hotter the fluid is the thinner it gets, which would enable higher mpg. However, I think GM failed in providing a transmission fluid cooler coil that’s capable of sufficiently cooling the fluid for city stop and go driving as well as towing something (highway driving is ok - doesn’t overheat, because of cooling air with speed). Also, it appears that over time, the thermal bypass internal gets clogged up a bit with fluid gunk or deteriorating components rendering it to operate inefficient that leads to creeping up higher temperatures.
I can't believe this either. Ive blown 3 torque converters and had my transmission rebuilt 3 times under warranty within 2000 miles of each other and by doing my research this is the product that I think is going to be a savior. the common denominator of each failure was long trip and by my house in southern ca we have a toll road hill that is long and pretty big and it takes my torque converter out and I believe the fluid is just way to hot.
Am I the only one who’s noticed this is the cleanest 2018 undercarriage you’ve ever seen in your life? Shit look at the oil filter, screw the mod I’d like to know how the hell it got that clean.
Thanks for posting this video. I heard about this and thought it was going to be a tremendous task to do. Seeing your video shows it's doable to even someone who isn't a "mechanic". 145 degrees???!!! awesome!
Yeah it sucks. It DOES keep your oil cool for longer but it creeps up until 195 and by that point the truck has noway to cool the fluid at all cus you have no thermostat. I found out that GM made a recall on this for 2014-2015 trucks and you have to buy new trans lines with the upgraded thermostat. In Louisiana the heat was 100-105 outside and trans temp never got over 180 with the upgraded transmission thermostat/coolant lines.
Now that the weather is low 80s here the trans temp doesn’t get above 165. Remember, the transmission needs to heat up and get to operating temp to work and flow right. 140-180 should be good for trans
It should! I believe the 2011 had the 6L80 but I don’t think it had a transmission thermostat like the 14+ look into a larger transmission cooler like mishmoto
Did you lose enough fluid you had to add? I’m planning to do this but the 2021 doesn’t have the dipstick and you have to add from below the truck. That seems like a pain in the ass, along with trying to make sure it isn’t under or over filled.
Had to replace my transmission on my 2014 Silverado a year and a half ago. The dealer didn't do the thermostat update. Going to do this mod an hope it prolongs this transmission's life. Thanks for the vid!
Dame nice I noticed eveytime my transmission hit 194 it starts shifting ruff in traffic I thought the guy behind me hit me one day got this going to give it a try
Transmission has 114k on it. Transmission oil has 3k on it. No issue with tranny. I just don’t see how this really does anything when my motor temp runs at 210 degrees
Nice upgrade! Your video title should really not have the the words "Thermostat Delete" though, since you are actually doing a Thermostat Upgrade. Your statement about not having to warm up the transmission to check the fluid level may not be correct, because you still have a thermostat installed, so the fluid temperature will still need to be above the installed thermostat rating before it opens and allows fluid flow through transmission cooler.
Hey thanks for your comment, I do want to point out that it is not a thermostat what’s so ever. Check out the link in the bio and read more about the product. Thanks again for watching! 🙏
Will adding this to my 'New' transmission when it comes in. Have a 14 with 149000 and mine has the GM faulty tranny. Brown fluid, temps as high as 190 plus on summer day. Bucks when you first put it in D of a morning. Searches for 3-4 or 4-5. Im biting the bullet and replacing everything. New torque, lines, cooler and a Jasper rebuild. No chance for that old fluid getting into system. Its a Hell of an expense but I hope it will keep the truck going another 150000. Thanks for the video.
My 14 looks good for the years it has just had to do mine at 160k…. 5k for a trans and maybe another 5 k for a good engine rebuild when the day comes I personally think is better than a new 60k+ truck I only paid 31k when I drove mine off the lot
Did this to mine. I only drove it for about 15 mins but never went passed 127.. before it’s have already been up to 190 doing the same drive. Thanks 🙏🏻
2 month later, still working pretty well but if you’re going to be driving on long trips I’d say 4 hrs away or more I’d invest in trans cooler to keep it cooler or it will go back up to 190+
I see the 2 links up there to Amazon, what is the difference between the 2? I would prefer the one you installed. I assume the first link is a bypass that you didn't use and the second is what you installed?
Yeah, watching this was like trying to catch Santa Claus dropping off presents as a kid. Felt like i missed it as soon as I nodded off, except I didn't nod off. Lol
The update and thousands of other people that also have this sure cool kit love it. The guys over at superior transmission parts know what they are doing. I highly recommend this upgrade. I do not recommend just plugging it or flipping the thermostat. You want to have the pressure relief ball too so in cold weather it has the correct flow.
I always recommend doing more research. But trust me you do not want high temps in these transmissions. I have been a tech for over 15 years now and GM tech for most of it. The only reason they are allowing these transmission to get so hot is for fuel economy. Just so they can add that extra and make it look good. I would rather have my transmission properly cooled and lose a small amount of fuel economy. So little you will not even notice.
Thank u so much for the info. I’m still going to change it . Just wish I could find some one that would tell me how it works . That’s what I’m interested in
Basically it allows flow through the cooler at all times. It has a soft spring that eliminates back flow and then the check ball is for cold weather if the cooler is frozen and can’t flow the fluid will feed right back to the transmission.
Installing mine when it gets here monday on my 18 sierra , just replaced the trans pan filter and went with mobil 1 blue label tranny oil already i feel the difference smoother shifts temp is down to 180s compared to 195+ cant wait to see how much better it will get with this delete kit
This isn’t the best modification for the colder climates. I have had this bypass/delete installed for a year now, and I’ve found the operating temp is far too cold for my liking thru the winter. For most of the winter, I have only seen the hottest operating temp Of 70 degrees F. I don’t think this is a good idea for transmissions to run that cold. I would suggest putting in the updated 155 thermostat for the winter months if you’re running empty with no load.
@@gerardocuarez9034 I don’t know. I’m not saying not to do it, but up here in Canada last winter, my transmission temps never went above 55 degrees F for the whole winter. I won’t know if that’s bad to run it that cold or not, but that’s not running anywhere near to what normal operating temps are.
I should also add…..in the summertime, this is a great mod to run in the warmer temps of the summer. Pulling a camper at any time, the temps consistently stay about 50 degrees cooler than before. Always about 140 to 150 now. Before the mod, they all run right around 200 to 220….that’s scary stuff when pulling.
The STL 010 kit IS FINE FOR CANADIAN WINTERS. Even with snow on the ground in a wet west coast -5°C day my 6L80E tranny always gets up to temp 150 - 160°F.
@@James-rk6go Here we often see -30 celsius, so I will take no chance, I will use Amsoil syntech ATL witch is good to -65 Celsius and up to 245 Celsius
Thanks, checked your video before going under, knew what to take with me and watch out for. I did do the TSB for the new bypass replacement though not this kit.
270 Jesus man. You need to replace with amsoil and this bypass. 275 you get an alarm and 290 it goes into limp mode. Your trans might be toast already.
@ngirardo86 honestly I just replaced the bypass and my truck is running like a champ . Also serviced the transmission. 2 transmission shops told I had to replace it. But no still good. I even went to mexico twice
@@MarioMartinez-zk2wk if you drove it with it hitting 270 degrees then I can almost tell you without a doubt you did some damage to that transmission. Just keep an eye on it.
@@919blackangelchange your fluid with amsoil. I bet that’s the issue. If you have the OEM fluid in. It’s garbage. I did mine with 44k on it today and didn’t hit past 133deg I just changed it last week with amsoil though.
Once you install this and you check trans fluid immediately am I looking for the fluid to be in between the cold range or hot since you can now check the fluid instantly? Thanks
@@919blackangel I had an aftermarket cooler installed but they screwed me, was suppose to run inline with radiator and they bypassed it instead , still runs at 190. The only thing I believe would help is the tru cool 40k cooler and a deep transmission pan. Allows for more fluid, which should reduce heat up
There are other issues that could cause your temp to get that high. I have seen locked up or failing torque converters. Slipping clutch packs, broken or worn sungears… old transmission fluid was another big one.
Nice! I love it. AJT Design injected fob. I made a video on it! Check it out! Also if you like this video hit that subscribe button I’m a new channel just starting out!
@@Bobsgaragetech thanks for the feed back, that really helps. I’ll see if i can get to the bottom of the issue. I’m not going to give up on the product just yet because it makes the most sense out of most of the thermostat deletes.
@@Vill254 just a heads up, if the converter has started to slip / chatter on TCC it could drive temps higher. and in the beginning of failure you may not even feel it slipping if it was during a pull / tow / haul situ. you may still need to add an external ( oil to air type vs. the factory heat exchanger inside the rad) if you bypass the rad heat exchanger (oil to coolant type "cooler") rule of thumb is install 2 of the Hayden / tru-cool coolers in series and make sure they are 1st in the air flow path (no obstructions in the air flow thru path) OTHERWISE if you have some other items causing lower air flow across the cooler (due to lights on the grill or grill guards / bumpers etc. ) GET the NEW TRU COOL WITH the automatic electric aux fan units (either the biggest single or 2 doubles. feel free to go to our website: www.superiortransmission.com there is also a contact us section if you need further questions answered or are just wanting to touch base. thanks ! p>s> 180 deg.
