GM has a lower temperature thermostat available under TSB#21-NA-199. Why wouldn’t we just do that? The new thermostat opens at 70C (158F) instead of 90C (194F). As i understand it the bypass leaves it open all the time, which keeps the fluid too cold and lowers MPG.

Hank, I installed the STL010 this weekend and replaced the fluid and trans filter and I'm still running at 195 degrees. on my 2016 yukon XL I think my trans cooler lines need to be flushed. wish I flushed it while I had it all apart. I bought some lube guard transmission cooler cleaner from Amazon and am going to take it apart again and blow the cooler lines out this time. Also I didn't lube the pistons.Maybe I'll try that. @@scottsnell2888 ah ok good. I was going to say if you’re like me and have the 4.3 v6, it’s a different cooling system. We don’t have the auxiliary fin cooler in front of the condenser. Wouldn’t suggest this mod for the colder climates. I’ve ran this bypass for a year now, and it runs far too cold in winter. Warmest operating temp I’ve seen so far all winter was 26degrees Celsius/or mid 70’s Fahrenheit at running temp. Longer open driving it would always go down to 20 degrees. I will be looking for an alternative for next winter for sure.

@@pokerstar81 in your area, it’s a no brainer install and enjoy the benefits. Everyone there should be running one of these bypasses. They are definitely transmission savers in the warm climates. You’ll be running at 140 - 150 instead of 200.

@@Osvaldo-xs2mt In that case, I’d definitely recommend changing the internal filter. The internal filter is usually overlooked in regular maintenance as well as the dealerships usually for some reason almost never recommend changing it in regular maintenance. I took the initiative myself to do it after the dealership declined to do it on my own truck ( 2011 Chevy Suburban 2500 6L90 6Spd) & have dropped temperatures from 190s to 150s during the exact same drive cycle as well as ambient temps I usually do including towing. I’d put it in a list to help drop transmission temperatures in ascending order: 1. Change Internal filter as well as pan fluid only 2. Add the STL010 Bypass Kit 3. Change torque converter ( which you should do regardless 6l80/6l90 every 100,000 miles due to factory manufacturing weakness 4. Add transmission auxiliary cooler or better yet another additional cooling fan or upgrade I’m almost 100% certain this will narrow down in that order finding out what’s causing those high temps as well as increase longevity in those transmissions. I’m not a professional however confident in the methods provided. Best of luck!

EPA regulations, forcing Car manufacturers to do magic, so the polar bears live for another 1000 years. Another words, running oils, or keeping it at higher temp, help save gas, oil thinner up, parts runs more freely. I learned it from an GM mechanic. Basically, they care less if we the work force horses have to dished out money prematurely. But they care!🫣🫣
