Along with all other Slavic languages, Russian and Slovak descend from a proto-language called Proto-Slavic, descending from earlier Proto-Balto-Slavic language. There are over 20 different Slavic languages, divided into 3 major subgroups, with Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian belonging to the East group, Polish, Czech and Slovak to the West group, and Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Bulgarian to the South group.
In today’s language challenge, we will compare some of the similarities between these two Slavic languages, with Bogdana (Russian speaker) and Linda (Slovak speaker) challenging each other with a list of words and sentences.
Russian is an East Slavic language and an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and many minor or unrecognized territories. It is an unofficial but widely spoken language in Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine and to a lesser extent, the other post-Soviet states.
Slovak is a West Slavic language. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia, and is also native to the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and a portion of western Ukraine.

Hello, i don't have any social media where i can contact you. So i write you a comment. I dont know if you have an idea about AMAZIGH PEOPLE ( the indigenous of north africa and other parts of Africa ). I'm 100% sure that they exist in Canada, from different countries of north Africa and regions of these countries... they're also called BERBERS. With so many dialects ( tachelhite, tarifite, zayane, kabyle, chaouia, tamasheq ( touareg ) i think this will be a big challenge for you, to discover ( if you don't already know about it) this language and to find similarities between it's dialects and maybe other languages. I would love to hear back from you regarding this comment. I really enjoy watching your videos, and i wish you all the best. Sincerely from Morocco.

False alarm! It's actually nothing more than a coincidence. Persian roshd is borrowed from Arabic
@rdtgr8
@rdtgr8 5 лет назад
I think it corresponds to râst kardan "to straighten, to erect". Russian-German linguist Vasmer assumed that Slavic rosti "to grow" is connected to Avestan ǝrǝđva "straight". And this is typical change for these kind of verbs. For example: "to sit": u-sědati / u-sěsti(-sia) = Persian ni-šast "to conduct": voditi / vesti = Old-Iran. vast (as in Armenian na(v)vast "shipdriver/sailor") "to break, to harm"" Ukr. škodyty / [theor. škosti] = Persian šekast So we have here the same-alike: rodati (comp. to Avest. ǝrǝđva) / rosti = rast The meaning "to erect" in Persian is exact synonym for this in Russian: Они подняли 2 детей / They erected 2 children = Они выРАСТИли 2 детей / They grew up 2 children. And btw Latin-based RECTus / eRECT looks also typically CT/ST matching.

@@HladniSjeverniVjetar There are two different versions, the Upper and Lower Sorbian. I've heard that one of them is more similar to Polish while other is more similar to Czech. @@HladniSjeverniVjetar That is of minor significance given the fact that both of those languages are Slavic in the core, thus making Turkish/German vocabulary insignificant compared to the root one. It is not even needed for languages to be extremely similar to get an episode on this YT channel, the only thing needed are two people speaking 2 different languages that have connection in any sense so there could be common words- and surely Sorbian and Serbian fit that.

A Slovak here I understand every Russian word here, but when I hear Russian I get about 20% of meaning and usually get lost. I think Russian girl helped a lot with her pronunciation.
@Moowing
@Moowing 5 лет назад
the Russian girl was pronouncing the words naturally. It is easier to understand separate words when you are prepared that they have the same roots in your language, rather than trying to understand whole sentences which contain not only words with similar roots. Anyway I speak Russian as a second native language and it takes me 1-2 months to get used to the differences between Slavic languages and understand them (~mostly). For example, palatalized Rj almost always changes to RZ in Polish. If a Polish person doesn't know this, (s)he won't understand MORjE in Russian, and a Russian person won't understand MORZE in Polish and there are hundreds of such paradigms. If you know all of them it will be easier to understand another Slavic language. And one thing to keep in mind, is that Russians understand all Slavic languages better than other Slavic People understand Russian. This is for several reasons: First, Russian vowels reduce when they are not stressed, however in some dialects they keep their authentic pronunciation and Russians are used to both reduced and not reduced pronunciations of words. For Example "Milk" is written MOLOKO and pronounced like that in some dialects, while in modern Russian it is pronounced MALAKO (close to MLAKO). So Russians understand all versions of this word, E.g. MLEKO. So it is difficult for other Slavic people to understand versions of Russian words with reduced vowels but easy for Russians to understand not reduced versions in Slavic languages. Second, Russian language contains all the layers of Slavic languages. In Russian "eye" is written and pronounced GLAZ and other Slavic people don't understand it's meaning, while Russians understand OKO, OCHI etc, as those words are used in poetic language and in some dialects. Third, Russian language usually has tons of synonyms for each word however those synonyms are used in different contexts. For example: Doctor can be translated as DOKTOR (general word), VRACH (for medical specializations), LEKAR' (traditional medicine) etc. So Russians can understand all these words used in other Slavic languages.

Hello :) I haven't been here for some time, and here such a surprise. Slavic languages :) 1) vietor = wiatr [v'atr] But I have to admit that at first I thought there was D (viedor) and not T, so I was shocked that in Slovak wiadro [v'adro] 'a bucket' is masculine :) 2) krov = krew [krev] I was like, "isn't there -a?" I really thought that 'O' was accented (because it sounded oddly) and '-a' was magically Russian reduced :) I thought about 'krowa' [krova] 'a cow' :) 3) krylo = skrzydło [skr'ydl'o] I totally forgot that East Slavs are into vowels (or honestly, we West Slavs aren't into them, Slovak and Czech like semivowels R and L, so they don't need vowels, and we like consonant's clusters), and if they can't put them comp. Polish krowa and Russian [koróva] or dłoń = ladónʹ 'palm', they get rid of consonants, e.g. widły = víly 'a pitchfork', mydło = mýlo 'soap', zerkalo = zwierciadło [zv'erćadl'o] (the same root but more sound shifts, a cognate to wzrok 'eyesight' and zerkać 'to peek, glance') 4) rast = wzrost I thought that it is róść [rós't'] 'to grow', because I was fooled by earlier Slovak: l'ad = Polish: lód :) Of course after seeing the word and after a moment of reflection, similarities are easily seen, but the first associations are the purest :) As always nice video :) PS. I needed to edit it, because for some unknown for me reason YT puts empty paragraphs when I press ENTER :(

1. Vedro "a bucket" is actually a neutrum not a masculinum.

@@mihanich it means big and 1000 😊 I'm listening Bulgarian songs and know there some words. Bulgarian slang is the most difficult moment for me. So without slang български is very easy to understand. Ты болгарин? Тогда пиши на болгарском - я разберусь.

I'm Brazilian. I knew jablko because of a lovely cartoon I used to watch when I was a kid (but it's Czech) "Koulelo se jablícko" "A minhoquinha que morava na maçã" in Portuguese
