@@crafty1096 They never got along about who got credit for what. Simon wrote pretty much everything & Garfunkel directed the layout of the songs. Garfunkel never wrote anything for the two of them. He suggested the 3rd stanza for "Bridge Over Troubled Water", & Simon hated it; he wanted it to be 'a little hymn'. "Sail on silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine All your dreams are on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind" Simon also said he should have sang lead in "Sound Of Silence" although his voice wasn't as high as Garfunkel's. If you notice, in this performance, Simon finished the high part at the end... where Garfunkel's voice would have soared. Garfunkel could no longer reach the high notes because of his throat surgery. That's the reason for the key changes & variations in this performance.

Fun fact: ln the early 60's Columbia Records had formed a new folk band called The Pilgrims in response to Warner Records very popular hit folk trio Peter Paul & Mary. A then little known songwriter came to the studio with a song the producer hoped would be the debut single for The Pilgrims. The producer liked the song and asked the songwriter to record a demo to give to The Pilgrims, but when he heard the demo sung by the songwriter and his buddy he gave them a record contract to record it themselves. The Pilgrims recorded their debut album "Just Arrived" without that song. The songwriter was Paul Simon, his buddy was Art Garfunkel, the song was The Sound Of Silence. The lead singer of The Pilgrims was a black former soldier who was also a very talented Broadway, stage, musical and opera performer/dancer/actor/singer who later went on to star in 2 hit tv sitcoms named "Soap" and "Benson"........ the indomitable Robert Guillaume. Bonus: there are videos of Guillaume on RU-vid doing a fantastic rendition of another Simon And Garfunkel song "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". R.l.P. RG

Simon and Garfunkel started singing together in the 50s as "Tom & Jerry." When you listen to them in this video from 1990, you're hearing 35-40 years of knowing what the other guy is going to do. Also, just for reference, this song was recorded in 1967 or thereabouts, and here they are singing it 23 years later with even more expression and maturity. They were one of the greatest folk-rock groups of the 60s and 70s. I played their albums so often that I wore them all out.

Simon and Garfunkel were the OG. And the country at the time Simon wrote this song was such that this song was THE anthem , and their voices WERE the cry in the distance. Amazing duo that should have had a long career, if they could have gotten along. This reunion was considered iconic BECAUSE of their history. You are watching a performance when they were already old. This was their hit from the early 1960's ... without which they were going to break up. Such a simple song that works so well.

I saw Simon and Garfunkel about 15 years ago, it was one of the BEST concerts I have been to, and they sounded JUST as GOOD as they did back in the '60s. WONDERFUL!!

NO ONE can touch the magnificence of Simon and Garfunkel on their own songs. You need to hear their studio version of this song which is absolutely amazing with a full orchestra, etc., but oh those fortunate souls that were able to see this scaled down simple reunion performance in person!

I don't cry easily. This performance, after hearing the original when I was young, and after the bitter split they went through, and coming back together more seasoned and wiser, more compassionate, brought me to tears. I feel sure the song had a deeper, more personal meaning to them this time around.

The title of the Simon & Garfunkel song was The Sounds of Silence. It referred to all the sounds in the world that we willfully ignore.

This is our folk music, from the height of the sixties (1965) during a time that we were torn because of the war in Vietnam, and the war in our cities and states for civil rights, the war on poverty. There was a lot going on during that time and here were these two folk singers putting it all to music, subtle and clean. I have lived my whole life with a special place in my heart for Folk Music/Americana, and its ability to put into a wonderful melody our hopes and our fears. It sometimes even gives us a solution if we listened carefully.

I got to see them at one of Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit shows. This was one that I thought I'd never see, but it happened. It was magical, but Melissa Etheridge's cover of Piece of My Heart stole the night. The other I thought it would never happen but it did, was getting to see Montrose reunited at a Sammy Hagar show, about six months before Ronnie Montrose decided to leave us.

Paul Simon is a masterful storyteller. HIs lyrics are like an artist's brush on canvas, painting us a vivid picture of "10,000 people, maybe more."

They released two studio versions of this song. The first release was on their debut album with just their voices and a single acoustic guitar. The album was a flop on the charts. The second version was released 14 months later as a single. They took the original master and overdubbed drums and electric guitars into the mix, changing it from a simple folk song into a soft rock ballad. Paul Simon's vocal on the record doesn't sound anything like it does in concert. On the record he sang the root notes of the guitar chords, essentially harmonizing with the guitar. In concert he sang in harmony with Art Garfunkel's voice.

This performance demonstrates the raw talent that existed between these two. Not an exact copy of the original recording but updated arrangement but still familiar enough to not distract. Good choice to review.
