@@UnsanHame they've had what could be considered a near life-long feud. Unfortunately it's what led to them disbanding and never really being able to come back together to work aside from one-off performances and shows. There are lots of articles and interviews that cover it.
Same age, now 67. For me this is the best rendition because of the passion in their voices but particularly because of the expression and finesse of the keyboard player. He is the real hero of this recording.
They may not be friends, but there is a mutual respect shown. They both know they would've needed a different path without the other. The path they chose put them both in esteemed territory.
Tom, I think they have a mutual beneficial working relationship. That's probably as far as I would take it without the benefit of having an intimate relationship with any of these two fabulous artists.
I love how Paul falls back at 4:13 to give Art his moment and then when Art realizes brings him back with him as Paul's clapping for him. The respect between these two. Such gentlemen
Came here to say the same thing. When Paul walks backward out of view, it's a perfect moment that I have played a thousand times. Hats off to the camera person and the editor/switcher for that shot.
My wife and I were there for that concert. It was the second time seeing S&G live, the first time was at Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium about 1970 or 71, just after Bridge was released. Awesome!
Turning 70 years young in June.. this song really moves my heart, because my now deceased brother, Dennis, " Turkey" Archer played this album, over & over & over in the mid 60s, down in the basement of our house in Saginaw Michigan.
Here I am, a middle age man. Half my life behind me and hopefully at least half in front of me. I listen to all types of music but find myself listening to this song in particular every so often. So few hits between this duo but oh what great songs they are. Whatever differences led them to separate, it is great to see them come together, sing this masterpiece, and show the ultimate respect to one another at the end. This comment will be buried with the rest, but wanted to give the credit these two deserve.
You know, I have had a pretty bad day today. Nothing went right at work, my kids are struggling with college and I can't help them, and I' navigating the standard health challenges that most 60 year olds deal with. I ran across this video and watched it all the way through. None of that crap seems to be anything major now. These two men are legendary.
Awesome how music soothes the soul for you. At 6O I had my health turn on me. Lung cancer (able to conquer) clogged major artery my BRILLIANT doc grafted and a hyper thyroid we've been able to calm. Thru it all I used music to calm the fear. Putting our trust in total strangers is so hard but they earned my trust. My 3 girls are thru college and strong. I used to say I'd work til I died bc I loved my career but retired last yr And now hang out with my grandkids. Hope you're remaining calm still with music as you walk thru some strife. It's hard to be powerless but seems you know the way to calm...peace to you Mark. Just walk towards retirement. Lawdy it's great 😃.
People busting on Art's voice on this? Seriously? I am shocked and stunned that he is this good at age 68 here. No one's voice remains exactly the same at 70 as it was like 20. That being said.. Art still sounds like Art.. still has that signature sound and Paul sounds great too.
I don't think people get that a person's voice changes when they get old. I guess people still expect that they would still sound like their 20 something selves. Like you said, Art sounds good for his age....you can still hear the passion and emotion in his voice and it's still angelic as ever.
I don't think Art sounds horrible here, maybe not exactly the same, the only difference is he is singing at a lower key than the key he usually sings at. He still sounds very good actually. I think he smoked a lot which is why his voice might sound a little dark because of that. But it isn't terrible. His voice is just at a lower key in pitch. It still sounds great and he is still able to hit the notes, just one key and pitch down. Very good Art! Glad you are coming back!!!!!
the sad fact they couldn't get along with one another they both were blaming the other person for doing something they couldn't as far as music was concerned.not realizing that both of them together made wonderful music and could not do it without the other.
I am literally crying right now as this song is ending. The vocals, the goosebumps, the audience screaming. Two legends on stage making others happy with their music. Such a powerful song it breaks my heart...
Depends on what you are listening to. This is legendary but there is also tons of great songs produced nowadays.. but if you're talking about the mainstream pop culture you're probably right.
+Jasder If we're talking mainstream music, then you're right. If you're talking music in general, you're wrong. There is still a lot of great Music being produced. It's just that the really passionat people have moved to different genres. For example, the rock/metal scene has grown into something really great, while some other genres like classic folk-rock has dissapeard. That's because the same kind of people who once wrote comfortably numb and sound of silence are now writing music in totally different genres.
See Joe Walsh's interview. Music is (including voice ) is run threw a computer until the pitch is perfect. Musicians can't hardly make a living due to pirates.
For me - in a very sad and meaningful moment - the line "when darkness comes so hard" - performed in a way by Paul Simon that i just can't describe - means everything.
Paul had unofficially given the song to Art a long time ago. He still owns it but he knows it’s Art’s song. It’s a shame these two couldn’t make it work professionally for longer .., they made magic.
@@thenlnlkn well, Art used to sing this particular song solo. It was always known that Paul is superior when it comes to songwriting, but Art is superior singer and this song shows best of both. This must be the best song Paul has written and the best vocal performance by Art.
this was played at my Wifes funeral on Monday this week, Not a dry eye in the Crematoriam such powerful words and an all time favourite of hers Fly high girl
I think they´re both pretty good, and an amazing duo when singing harmonies, but Art´s voice is just out of this world. If angels could sing, I bet they would sound like Art here.
That's my favorite moment and I've watched it more times than I can count. It's the perfect camera angle with Paul backing up out of frame. Kudos to the camera crew.
There may NEVER be a duet like this again!!! This is what it sounds like when your voice is an instrument that just takes over everything else. Both are great by themselves but WOW - together - like no one else.
Die beste Musik ever. Habe Simon Garfunkel in München gesehen. Einfach spitze. Könnten sie noch einmal auftreten, ich wäre bestimmt dabei. Egal, ob New York, Sydney oder Kapstadt.
This song, along with “The Sounds of Silence “ bring back so many fond memories! I’m 70 years old. As a kid , I would spend time staying at our family farm for a few weeks every Summer. I was 12 or 13 the first time I heard “The Sounds.....”, along with my surrogate Grandmother. I was amazed that someone “her age” liked that song!😆So many happy memories! I tell adults in their 20,s and 30,s to cherish and make the most of their time now, because they will make their best memories while they’re young! That certainly has been my experience, and most of the people I know in their later years! 🤔🤔
God man... I put on the good headphones, have it cranked and by the end of it, I'm just sitting here crying, smiling, and looking like a damn psychopath in the middle of the cafe.. this is music friends..
These duo taught us that no matter how far they go, in their different ways, still music can bring them together and this song reminds us that friendship is something that we should treasure, and that's how magical the music it is. :)
I am an employee of Madison Square Garden with the technology and sound department, can tell you there was no auto tune involved. They just have older voices. :)
+Lee Keels I've seen another video of the same performance and on this one they have used auto tune but only slightly for a couple of high notes, they still sang amazingly 😊
These guys were pioneers in music. There selfless contribution will endure for generations. What a legacy to know that you will be played long after you've passed.
Art Garfunkel focusses so intensely on the perfection he puts out,he actually looks depleted. The miracle that is these voices.Still after all these years...classic wonderful.
Such a beautiful gift, this song. I was a young child when this song was written and released. Heard it on the radio for years and always liked it but only been recently could comprehend how remarkable it is. I grew up in a difficult home at times, but at 57, facing even tougher battles. When you have experienced trauma or hit rock bottom, you can truly understand how profound this song is and your heart aches for some comfort. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded. Simon & Garfunkel, incredible duet and songwriters. They don’t make them like this anymore. Thank you for helping the troubled souls out there.
Paul, the songwriter and artist. Art, the voice. These were the real strengths of each man individually. Together they performed songs that spoke for and to a generation. I'm grateful that it was the generation i grew up being a part of.
here today all over the world, the bio-war has begun, the fear is fueled by power-obsessed elites. It is a dark time here in Germany too. This song gives me courage and a lot of hope and strength to build a bridge for friends who are currently very afraid. Thanks to S&G
I am a law professor at the Catholic University in Caracas (I am 59) when I started my first class (on line) on 27th April 2020, I told them that we were going to "cross the bridge over trouble waters" of the pandemia and the troubles we are going through in Venezuela. I am sure we will cross it
Das sind noch Musiker! Ein Live Auftritt mit diesen Stimmen und einem Text mit Tiefgang. ..... Mir stehen die Tränen in den Augen. Grüsse Aus Deutschland.
@@canadiandeplorable2087 they were both english teachers? I think you meant students. They were best friends since very early school days, and had their first break at 16. Paul is less than a month older than Art.
I can’t stop my self from having teary eyes while listening to the song as I remember my happy childhood in the late 70’ to early 90’s and wishing I can travel back and enjoy the simple life with my family.
One of the greatest duets the world has ever seen. Love how Paul shows his appreciation at the end. After all the years of not talking, the bond was still there
At MSG that night, those last few moments Art was soloing, it almost felt as if the audience was physically uplifted, as the swell of applause mounted and crescendo’d simultaneous with Art concluding the song. I’ll never forget the communal sense of awe!
James, I completely agree with you. Every song they recorded together never failed to give me goosebumps and touch my soul. The 59th Street Bridge Song always plastered a big smile on my face and sparkles in my eyes. Such a light hearted and happy song.
OMG That could very well be the most beautiful song ever written. Makes me cry every time. The quality of music that these two did together in a short period of time, transcends generations. Thank you for this gift.❤
For me... Its the Song of The Century... SIMON And GARFUNKEL ... It brings tears in my eyes and goosebumps whenever I listen to this Song... They are best duet Singers... I had ever listened to .. May they perform like this always... And May God shower His blessings on them🙏🙏🙏
