People should be reminded that the players have a camera put in front of them immediately after a game, exhausted, hardly having any time to catch their breath, and give answers that come to mind on the spot. Pundits sit back in their comfortable seats, have a beverage or three and have time to think about what was said. Sure, Rooney has a right to say what he thinks and he has been there himself but still, he does so from very comfortable surroundings, not exhausted or stressed in the least. Much like these pundits who, hours later and well rested, have the time to analyse everything, several times over. Was it right to blame it on the schedule? Maybe not, but he's not the only player, nor club to have complained about it.

You’ll do well (Gabriel, saliba, rice, odegaard & saka) have missed 7 league games between them all.. compared to (Alison, Trent, VVD, Macca & salah) have missed 33 games between them 🤷🏻‍♂️

The issue is that football is more and more about being an athlete than it is about skills or tactical nous. So if you want to keep pushing football that way you have to treat the players like athletes. That includes adequate recovery times as is required by all other athletes in their sports. Because TV is governing the scheduling and not sporting competition you are not seeing players at their best. That’s what van dyke is trying to say. As long as fans and pundits agree that footballers are not going to be at their best playing games (which essentially means fans are being short changed) then it’s all good. Virgil is just pointing that out.

Liverpool have been extremely lucky this season to be where they are, they have not been as good as City and arsenal, and a lot of what they have done this season has been due to the klopp leaving effect. They just haven't got the quality to maintain what they have been doing.

I want to ask this question to any player, right now, you train every day from, possibly 7am until whenever right, what is the different in playing at 12pm, 3pm, 5pm, 8pm, you have been doing it since you become professional, I have to work every day of the week and would be likely if I have two days off, if you don’t want to play all this don’t become professional players, and people like Pep, Klopp and Virgil Van Dijk should know better
