The problem arose when the VAR ref wrongly thought that the on field ref had given the goal. It should be protocol for the VAR to check the on field decision then said "Check complete, No Offside, Goal stands". State the decision made in the way it is in Rugby where you will even hear the ref double check the decision to get it reaffirmed. As it is the game is over there is nothing we can do to change the result.

What were they doing? Why did they think, in contrast to the millions watching, that it had been given as onside? Protocol??? Who remember when VAR awarded a penalty to United after the final whistle? That's the first I've ever seen something like that and nobody mentioned protocols. They could've even awarded it at half time because it was a goal. It doesn't matter how long it takes

Of course it matters how long it takes. It completely alters the mindset of the teams. Imagine Spurs holding onto the ball in the last minute for a draw, then its announced Liverpool goal stands and Spurs are losing. But in this instance, stopping the game as soon as VAR see the game is still 0-0 is fine. Goal rightly awarded and Spurs can adapt.

The game hadn't "restarted" though. There was the incident and the ref blew for full time (stopping the game). If the ball had gone out for a throw, and it was taken then the ref couldn't go back. But the ball was still in play when he blew, which is no different to blowing for the penalty anyway. You might think its silly. But that's not the point. It's the laws of the game.

On Darren's end he was checking on "Possible Goal" in which there's no line drawn. He didn't, bet a single eyelid on the screen on the large words "Possible Offside Goal", this, is incompetency and negligence. Now when game kicks off, he didn't exercise his professionalism to inform about the wrong decision. If Darren truly realised that the score didn't go 0-1 and it was a free kick instead of a kick off, he should consider the interest of all the stakeholders and stop the play in that instant. What's worse? Breaking protocol or staking your entire ORGANISATION's validity, credential, reputation, integrity and fairplay? They knew as soon as the freekick was being taken because if the right decision they thought was being made came through, they would have restarted from a centre kick. So it's not a minute later, 30 seconds later, they would have known immediately and chose/were too scared to do anything about it. we've already heard of VAR 'looking out' for their mates.

This is by far the most sensible discussion about what happened that I've heard so far. This was a COMMUNICATION problem, not a technical problem. It will be interesting to see if they release the audio because then we'll know whether the VAR refs were communicating with the ref after the game started about the mistake or if they were to scared to. The rules are you can't go back after the game has started but I fully agree with Simon and Stuart here, just shout at the referee, tell him to go back, they would have realised immediately once the game started with a freekick, and the scorecard still says 0-0!! This isn't about them being bad referees, this is about the VAR and AVAR being bad communicators. What I wonder though is if they did tell the ref, and maybe the ref said I can't go back now, it's too late! This is something that Howard Webb will need to clarify!

The protocol argument is a total BS. Liverpool scored a legitimate goal. The game should be resumed at the centre. Not at spurs half because of offside. They could pull it back if they wanted. Say if the ball gone out for a corner, a player thought its a throw-in then throw the ball in. You would pull it back and say to him, not throw in, it’s a corner.

Simon , Simon , Simon if no var I don’t think the linesman put ups the flag as that’s what the var ref thought . Jones only gets a yellow card so Liverpool still have 11 men at that point and spurs don’t score as ok flag goes up right or we except it . But var is suppose to rectify that you can’t go without var it would not count because var influences the on field decisions with if I’m Wrong it will rectify it if I’m right it changes nothing . Linesman under var is only to raise his flag if he’s 100% sure . Diaz isn’t in line with the player he’s nearly a yard behind so if the linesman is up with play he should clearly see diaz is on side it wasn’t a tight call . I reiterate var ref thought the on files decision was that it was a goal . I said 12 months ago it won’t be long before PGMOL are taken to Court .. mark Halsey has said there is corruption with in the refs association. Having an agenda against certain clubs . Bets on bookings , corners etc . Then this happens .. protocol wasn’t followed . If I don’t follow protocol at my place of work I’m getting the sack if deemed a serious breach . The message from PGMOL is that VAR saw it and knew it was obviously onside but due to a communication error or something they thought the referee hadn't disallowed the goal and just said "check complete" which led the referee on the pitch to stick with the original decision, however this excuse doesn't make much sense cos it said on the screen they were checking a disallowed goal. Also strange that this wasn't immediately rectified.

The decision was a howler, but so were so many in the game; Jota not touching Destiny when he got his first yellow Curtis Red that I have only heard one exp-player say was a red Destiny waving a card, which to my understanding is a yellow and would have had him sent off the advantage being played for LFC until they were clear through on goal and then it was pulled back Too many extreme decisions for only one side, combined with the refs coming back from the UAE for it not to stink

The VAR officiates clearly had it in for Liverpool. You could easily tell this by the still image of the Jones tackle they had prepared for the ref when they told him to go to the monitor. It wasn't long after this that they got the offside decision catastrophically wrong both on and off the pitch. The on pitch call was understandable, but the way VAR took things from there is mind boggling bafflingly stupid. Or was it? It would be great to hear the audio of what exactly was said at that particular time during the game. Does it line up with the official explanation?

I 100% agree with Simon and Stuart here. There HAS to be some sort of authority that goes - Hang on... what is going on here? This is a wrong call based on what we have seen. Stop the game and do a PROPER check. IF the rules are not allowing that... then the RULES are WRONG. Thats how simple it is. Some sports have special authority on the sidelines that can stop the game if such issues come up. One thing that would definetly helped in this case would have been if a manager can CHALLENGE the call and ask for proper review since it was not done. THis is another thing done in many sports to make sure that the right call is made. Lets think in solutions cause VAR atm is simply not working and is making way to many bad calls. And something has to be done now with players standing in offside position and in line with the keeper. Cause we had one such goal allowed this weekend that should have been ruled as offside. Just go look at the second goal for Villa and tell me the player in offside position did not block the view of the keeper for the ball.
@jonoharper4729

Specific protocols, procedures and language need to be implemented into the VAR system. In this case it should be... "Check underway/check complete/Onside/Fair goal/Goal awarded" All steps of the process need to be communicated, from the checks to the correct outcome, completed with an audible confirmation from the referee. I am shocked that there is no set, prescribed procedure and protocol that VAR must follow once the checking process is triggered. VAR lacks the basic, simple governance that exists in every business worldwide.

Liverpool fan here. I concede that the move that led to the Diaz goal was so marginal that it could quite easily have been flagged offside 90% of the time. So i'm not salty about that. It turned out to be a terrific goal, but I have serious issues with the offside rule anyway, and in my eyes a stray foot somewhere along the line by a defender who can't do anything about the attacker if he were 5 metres near the goal touchline is neither here nor there. The defender(s) near him should be what counts, but that is only my opinion. What should happen is 3 lights, red or green, should go up from each of the var officials and an ex-player immediately, and unless the player and a var agree then the on-field call should count anyway. If there is some agreement, then the colour of the lights decides. No playing back in slow-mo, only 1 replay at normal speed for fouls, and leave offsides to the on-field officials. Mic up the refs and show any action to the crowd on the big screen. If most if not all of these steps were taken, I think a more balanced and clearer result could be achieved.

The two VAR officials were monitoring VAR in a UAE match on Thursday, and apparently were very well paid for it. The Premier League club owned by UAE lose on Saturday and what happens later in the same day? A club that's expected to be a major challenger for the Premier League title is subjected to 3 very dubious VAR decisions. Curtis Jones red card? Skipp carried out a worse challenge on Luis Diaz last season. It was referred to VAR as a possible red card incident. No red card was given. PGMOL released a statement. They said:- This wasn't a red because when "a player is stepping into a challenge, gets the timing slightly wrong and catches the opponent above the boot, it has been consistent that these are not VAR red cards." Luis Diaz goal? PGMOL couldn't do anything else except hold their hands up to the VAR "error". Joe Gomez penalty? Joe Gomez is brought down in the penalty area which is referred to VAR, who determine it as no foul. Earlier in the season van Dijk is sent off for the exact same challenge, that was reviewed by VAR and confirmed. It was deemed a foul and as van Dijk was the "last man", he was shown a straight red card. Yet nothing for Joe Gomez? PGMOL personnel failing to follow their organisations own guidelines. Will they get more work from UAE? I think there's a strong possibility that they will.

They are all over the place with the debate and over-complicating what is needed to fix this issue going forward so here are my suggestions: 1. VAR communication in the future regarding goal/offside reviews being communicated to on-field ref should require VAR to state either "on side - goal allowed" or "offside - goal disallowed". 2. award Liverpool 3 points, allow Spus to retain its 3 points 3. After agreeing to actions 1 - 2 above let these pundits debate how wrong that is.

I don't think any reasonable people are suggesting that we should remove VAR or that the game should be replayed. What people do want is transparency regarding how the officials came to that decision. At the very least, the PGMOL should release the audio to the Premier League so that it can independently assessed, rather than them simply admitting they got it wrong and expecting everyone to just accept that and move on. If they've nothing to hide, release the audio.
