Simon is right. we've scruffed through. we won't play well ALL the time, but then winning and scraping through isn't sustainable.

It's not just Southgate though is it, the English media, commentators & pundits are just as bad - the way Shearer, Ferdinand, Lineker et al were hyping the team after winning on penalties despite the fact that Switzerland were much the better team over the 120 minutes and had the better chances especially in extra time (which everyone seems to be conveniently ignoring).

Its got shades Italia 90 - we stuttered, stumbled and lucked our way through to the semis, finally put in a good performance and got beaten..

The gumption to criticize Germany when England havent faced the same opposition is staggering. They lost to a Spain team on fire that would have battered England in 90mins. That was the real final and although Spain might run out of steam by the end having given so much to beat Germany, at that stage of the competition, they would have beaten any opponent, so it aint no shame to lose on extra-time like this and no indictment on Germany to be eliminated by spaniards. They beat the Danes that dominated your lot and drew against the same Switzetland that England needed penalties against while Germany didnt have 120 mins against them. England are in the last 4 by luck of the draw, not merit. The comparaison with France is ridiculous, because what they're doing by going through against Austria, Netherlands, Belgium & Portugal despite underperforming is what England have done against Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland, its not comparable. Netherlands is actually the first team on the same level and Southgate has never beaten that type of opposition in knockout tournaments, so we'll who "flatters to decieve" at the end...

Easiest thing to do in football is to avoid losing. To do that you just have to stop the other team from scoring. That is where Southgates tactics starts from and effectively end. Its the way greece did it years ago. Its risk free football taken to the nth degree. France do the same. If you see deschamps and southgate celebrate its with relief rather than with joy.

To me this shows what a skewed view of football these media guys have. The Swiss are actually a very good team, the issue is that the media has overhyped England’s players when in reality they are only so good for their clubs because they play along side better players from other countries.

How are the Swiss average? They were on a crazy unbeaten streak prior to the Euros and Germany only drew with them on the last minute. Where are these great teams in the Euros im still waiting to see one.

The dismissing of the Dutch is a bit ridiculous. They are ranked in the top 10, have won 7 of their last 10, score plenty of goals, and are one of the big teams. It's exactly the sort of opponent Southgate has historically come short against. These guys are acting like they're another Switzerland or something.

Not a southgate fan, but to be fair, I've been a little shocked at the strength of some of these lesser teams at this tournament. Not only were some of them giving it a real go, they were also excellent defensively and very disciplined. This has obviously made it difficult for teams like England. We aren't the only big nation that has struggled. Those teams we had aren't world class, but we all knew they'd be difficult to play against and there was a chance these games would be boring affairs that we just needed to win.

You could throw a blanket over the top 8 teams in Europe. It comes down to small matters of detail. Look at the quarter-finalists: - 3 of the 4 games went to extra time - the Spanish scoring from a header late in extra time, the Germans then putting a similar header over the bar, a few minutes later - the Portuguese missing one penalty in the shoot-out against the French, after there was absolutely nothing to separate the sides during 120 mins -the Swiss hitting the angle of post and cross-bar but the ball not ricocheting in - the Turks failing to convert chance after chance in the last 10 minutes.

I will take winning ugly over losing pretty every time, but this manager has shown over and over again that when it comes to the big teams, in tournaments, we lose

England are underperforming based on the calibre of players available. The clear issue is Southgate (and managerial team) who are so underprepared and relying purely on the quality of players to take them through rather than actual tactics and planning. He has been unbelievably lucky and every single game the opposition manager has dominated tactically. Look at the game against the Swiss, they see Saka dominating so the Swiss change tactics to stop the threat. Once it’s stopped what does Southgate do? Stand there with his hands in his pockets and then we concede. He eventually makes subs but just throws a load of players on, no formation, no tactics other than try to score a goal. Mind boggling.

I find it baffling how difficult English media people find it to compliment the German team. Lucky against the Hungarians?? What game were you watching? They were fantastic and even when they weren't made changes and solved problems. Spain marginally shaved the quarter-final. In the next breath, the same people talk about this being about results... I see football in general as not very entertaining. I am an old fan of this sport. No it's not nostalgia it's tangible. This preoccupation with keeping possession has made the game negative. No risks are taken with forward passes and it goes sideways and back and round and round.

Simon is bang on. England have never really beaten tough opposition (I.E a team we aren’t expected to beat) in a major tournament under Southgate. Unless you want to count the last Euros tournament where we beat a weak German side with ageing players in the last 16. But I would say we were favourites for that match too.

You know that when the team eventually loses, the world will cave in ! Simon has always said he doubts Southgate has the wherewithall to deliver a trophy, and I am still onside with that ! At some point you do have to play well !

They are in the semi-final and credit to them for that, but they have played down to their opponent's level in every game and in that respect are lucky to be here. People have very short memories. I've been watching - or enduring - England for decades, and the reality is we have always been bad to mediocre. People say Southgate has only beaten poor sides - well, prior to Southgate, we couldn't even do that. Anyone remember Iceland or Algeria, or the way the so-called Golden Generation huffed and puffed in 2006? Capello's mob in 2010? Also the idea that Germany was an average side in this tournament is just pure BS. They would have easily beaten England this time around. Germany was the second or third best team in this tournament and could even have gone through against Spain, given the chances they had.

Kane drops deep, as a result the midfield pretty much come to a halt as there’s no runner behind the defensive block, the play becomes slow and redundant of ideas, the ball inevitably goes to the wings and a cross comes in. That’s Southgate’s brand of football.

A couple of those penalties v the Swiss were perilously close to being saved or missed.

Playing this badly we're not going to be able to win ugly against any top team. We were very lucky to scrape through against Switzerland and Slovakia with two individual moments of brilliance. We could and should have won both those games comfortably if we had tried to score goals from the start instead of being so slow and negative all the time.

We have won 1 game in 90 mins. Drew against 4 average teams. Southgate’s main skill is his luck. No other England manager has had these easy routes to the tail end of competitions.

I just hope that when Southgate goes the FA man up and don't choose another 'yes man' We need an attacking coach to get the best from these players, hopefully an ex-striker who will pick attackers first and form the rest of the team around them.

Southgate has had the easiest run of games across all tournaments if you look at the fixtures in their entirety. We're in the semi-final, but this has to be one of the most unenjoyable finals I've ever watched as an England fan.

Got to agree, these lesser Euro teams are longer easy to roll over. Very organised and certainly defensively solid. Apart from Germany opener, re the result only Spain have looked a well oiled stand out team in this competition. Turkey certainly are an ever improving footballing Nation. So England got produce a performance we yet to see to beat the Dutch.
