Thanks so much for sharing your gift. The ESP is working here too. I'm really working on round shapes now and needed the help. So many good tips. I love the idea of the mirror, the paper to keep the shape and throwing the hight first. Thanks so much. Stay warm and get some hot chocolate going! It really looks cold there.
Thank you for this great tip on how to keep the shape of your pot with the use of a blow torch and paper! I hate to admit how many pots have been ruined in the transfer process =/ But not anymore!
Simon, in the use of wood ash, will it strengthen the clay and make it more plastic? Can I add some wood ash to my found clay so it won't crack so easily? Thank you in advance for replying.
I put a hairdryer on low in a chuck, point it at the pot at about 12" distance, keeping the wheel turning slowly. This allows for a nice slow, even drying and keeps you free to do other things. Some clay bodies, like porcelain, are sensitive to quick drying, so the more even and steady the drying process, the better. Just don't let your guard down and keep checking the pot.
I saw a recent vid including footage of your grandfather, and I noticed that both he and Lucie Rie move their heads the way you do when you're throwing. Could you tell me what it is that you're looking at when you do that. Is there something we should be seeing if we do it?
