Mr. Leach, you're awesome! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They are immeasurably helpful to a beginning potter like me. If I weren't so damn broke, I'd sign up for your workshop. Right now, that's only a dream but maybe someday. I wish you the best!!

Your comments on raw firing is how I feel. Bisque is so much extra baggage. Loading. Unloading. Glazing. Loading. Unloading. I have been single firing for a few weeks now and I am getting the hang of it. I have to say. Glazing. Loading. Unloading is much better. Not only that, but it keeps you in the mood to make more pots since your never waiting on a boring kiln load of bisque to cool down. Keep up the good work.

So interested to see the results on your once fired pieces! I've done that with small pendants and beads, but never the bigger pieces like cups and such.

Very interesting! Would love to hear more about "once-firing". Specific glazes that would work, different glaze firing schedule?

Well Simon, if there's only one book on raw glazing you can find on Amazon then I think you could fill the gap in the market!

Was just considering doing this with some flower pots I have thrown. Unsure how to do it in my electric kiln.

Inspiring. I've been thinking about raw glazing for some time now. Another aspect is that it's a more environment friendly way to work. Also I can relate to the post bisque inspiration decrease, I like my pieces alive when I alter them. Please share your thoughts on the firing results and talk some about firing schedules!

Yes less time and money ! more fluency in the work, more direct approach I like these aspects. Firing a little longer to burn out organic matter.

So, Simon, raw glazing but at 1200 degrees C, so what about 1000 degrees? Does wood ash work at that lower temp? I'm using a home made wood fired kiln, Cheers

There are 2 books on the subject of Raw Glazing. The better one is... Single Firing: The Pros and Cons (Ceramics Handbooks) by Fran Tristram Paperback: 128 pages Publisher: A & C Black, 1st edition (28 Jun. 1996). The general consensus is that the other older book is not so helpful, viz: A Potter's Guide to Raw Glazing and Oil Firing by Dennis Parks, Hardcover: 112 pages Publisher: A & C Black Publishers Ltd (Mar. 1980).

Dennis Parks book I have and is useful, but I'll look for the other book you mention - thank you !

I read somewhere you need about 10-20% clay in your glaze for raw glazing, How many percent clay do you have in the glaze you use? And do you glaze the pieces while they are leather-hard or bone-dry? Cheers! :)
@sleachpots
@sleachpots 7 лет назад
Thats right ! One can also add some bentonite . I glaze some dry some leather hard depends on the glaze. but i need more experience to really answer that question well. cheers

Simon, thank you for sharing information about raw glazing. what temperature do you use when you fire the raw glazed pots,, and how long do you fire it for?
@sleachpots
@sleachpots 7 лет назад
Temp I go to is cone 10, firing slowly at times to burn out the organic matter, around 9 hours total approx.

Hello Simon, Will you be adjusting your firing ramp to account for the raw glazing (longer in the 800 f to 1400 f ?) to help carbon burnout and avoid the evil bloating.what would you suggest as a firing schedule ??
@sleachpots
@sleachpots 7 лет назад
yes I elongated the firing somewhat, was pleased with the firing in general. Always something to learn from though.

The only downside to raw glazing i've seen is that it dulls bright colors some.
@sleachpots
@sleachpots 7 лет назад
stoneware cone 10 bright colours we do not look for so much, seems ok though to me so far.

Simon, how would I find out about purchasing a kick wheel from you?
@sleachpots
@sleachpots 7 лет назад
Info on wheels you can get from me direct by contacting via my website. There are different options for the wheel either left or right kick etc I am looking for people who might be interested at present for the next batch.

Not bisque firing would save a small fortune on gas, great idea.
