That style is really nice for bathrooms and children’s room storage. I’ve always been partial to the floating hardwood board 3”-4” backlaid with a thick veneer but we were going for a country cabinet look and matched the original turn of the century cabinets. Having a lumber mill helps. Thanks again for a great instructive video.

Typically doors are at least 1/2" overlay, so you should be adding 1 inch to your length. This simplifies the math, and makes construction easier as well. With plywood panels or MDF panels, it is OK to glue the panels in place. this will lock the panel to the stiles and rails, but the movement will still take place on the outside of the doors. The trick to this is to NOT glue the top 1/4" of the rails to allow for movement. The strength you gain from gluing the panels more than makes up for any loss in the rail joint.
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 5 лет назад
Al Amantea . Good point. I also usually use rails that are more than 1 1/2” wide. There were leftover pieces that I could use without buying any wood. Thanks for the comment.

How did you fill in the toe kick so stuff does not go under cabinet? When I apprenticed in a cabinet shop in High school we did that before installing the front style rails....get the cabinet box square before squaring it up with the front styles and rails that you fabricated as separate frame? I see things can be easier now that almost 40 years have past since then for me...no pocket screws back then :-)

Very nice series on cabinet construction. Did you think about putting a few pin nails in the joints on the doors for added strength?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop Год назад
Certainly you can add a pin nail. I typically do not do it as I never had one fail. If you know the cabinet is going to get a lot of abuse it might be important. I just finished the art craft table for the art studio. I used dados, glue and the strongest construction because of the abuse this cabinet will be subject to as it will be moved constantly. Thanks for watching

Why didn't you glue the panels in? You said they need to be able to move? Does that keep them from warping or something?

The plywood actually could be glued in because it will not have the movement that solid wood would have with the change in humidity. You never want to glue in solid wood panels because of the wood movement. Thank you

What fancy tools? The saw table? If your careful...you could do it with a cheap table...I'm planning on it anyway...
@1982MCI
@1982MCI 4 года назад
The only tool he used was a table saw. I bought my craftsman table saw about 10 years ago at a mb estate auction for $50 and see them at auctions all the Time selling for $50-$100 so there is no reason why anyone cant undertake a project like this. You could easily find a saw for s steal on craigslist or Facebook market place and get the saw and build your doors and still come out cheaper than buying doors or a vanity. There are ways of getting around the costs of new tools. You do not need new, expensive tools to make nice things, that's just an excuse to not do it!
@wansolve2036
@wansolve2036 5 лет назад
Hi, question on not gluing the inserts because they need to move; when I paint mine the panel bonds to rails and stiles anyway with the paint. Wouldn't that prevent free movement? Do I need to slit a line between the panels and the frames? Thanks!
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 5 лет назад
The paint will not hold the panel in place. If it wants to move it will and no you do not need to cut a line. The plywood in the video that I used could have been glued because the wood is stable but I chose not no do so. If you are using solid wood it helps to use wood with a low moisture count. I made doors for my shop out of construction grade 2x4's. The moisture content was rather high and I did get movement more that I expected. Thanks for the question.
