Hey there, love your videos. Just a quick secret trick to pass along... the hard wood pellets are pasteurized through the process of forming them (high heat from the process of pressure extruding when formed). A couple seasons ago I wanted to go 100% low tech and experimented with making production blocks without and additional sterilization or pasteurization. A strong oyster culture will outgrow contam risks even in open air inoculation, under the right circumstances, but better yet, will colonize hardwood pellets straight out of an undamaged bag without further pasteurization. Believe it or not, i ran about 1000 pounds of low tech bags that were formed simply with cold tap water, hard wood pellets (right from the bag), and good oyster mushroom grain spawn. Still using a really clean procedure, but no extra pasteurization or sterilization. Wanted to run our mushroom company as a low tech farm, and it worked as far as no or low contam rates are concerned, but just had yeilds that were too small to run commercially. Eventually switched to barrel sterilizing masters mix bags, and yeild went huge. But the bottom line is that those pellets come already pasteurized, and for a non-commercial crop, do really well right out of an un compromised bag. Try running an experiment and you'll get success without additional pasteurization. Just wanted to share from my previous experimentation, and since I respect and appreciate all the tips and experiments you show, wanted to pass it along for a fun trial.

Very cool 👍 As you mentioned it really comes down to yields. My focus now, in terms of substrate experiments is trying different supplements and substrate blends that can boost yields and be commercially viable, but still get away with a simple hot water pasteurization. I'm already close I would say on the species that don't need a ton of supplementation like Turkey Tail, Reishi, and Shiitake, etc. Still working on the oysters. So far I've supplemented up to 10% wheat bran with no contams, still playing. With this experiment, I spawned so heavy, I'm sure I could have skipped the pasteurization. These two strains are rippers.

@@RenegadeMushrooms Love it! What you do with experimental mycology, especially with an in-home lab, is exactly what we need to see to learn the different processes. Your videos are more valuable to new growers than any of the other informative mushroom videos online. Your simple explanations of each process are gold. Thanks again, you are benefiting the whole industry by spreading your knowledge. Cheers- Robin from @westcoast_mycology

Pleasantly surprised by how well the kings did. Thanks for sharing. Mini grow kits would be great take home experiments for grade school students.

A neat trick I got for sterile air from biologists: A benzen burner will create a sterile cone around it. Really convenient when you don't have a flow hood I had 1 contamination out of 17 test jars (4 batches)

can you detail this a little for me? I have several single burner camp stoves, propane, or white gas. How does that work? How is the cone shaped around the burner and how do I work in that sterile space?

Do you think these larger containers could benefit from air holes being drilled on the lower sides and covered with micropore tape? Also could you get more flushes out of these if you remove the whole thing from the containers after the first couple of flushes then flip them over back into the container?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 21 день назад
I don't think the holes with the micropore tape would help much with yield. I think you would just get more smaller mushrooms. I've heard of the "second flush upside down" tek with king oyster but haven't attempted it myself. My strain seems to flush pretty well right side up on flushes two and three.

I have watched your Lions Mane on Pasturezated Wood Pellets video and saw you placed a quart jar of grain spawn in each bag. If I only have 1.5 cups of grain spawn, is that OK? Will it just take longer to colonize or do I need an entire quart per jar to successfully fruit?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Год назад
You should be ok if you're going straight wood pellets with no bran supplementation. You could always just make a little smaller block and use less fuel pellets. The key is 1.375. Take your dry weight of HWFP and multiply it by 1.375. That should give you about the weight of water you need.
@Ranidae32
@Ranidae32 Год назад
@@RenegadeMushrooms I used 1 cup of bran and was more curious about the amount of grain spawn. I followed your 2 lb HW and 2 lb 13 Oz water but am curious if I can put less spawn in. It looked like you added a quart of spawn.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Год назад
@@Ranidae32 You can try it, but when you add bran your safe colonization window is much tighter. I would say you have a 50/50 shot with bran and that amount of spawn.

Hello Renegade, do you case your kings? It didn't appear so in this vid, but thought I'd check. Any differences in container dimensions relative to production challenges? I was thinking of a rectangular containers with less height and more lateral space, holding about the same overall substrate as what you are showing. Thanks for the great advice! One I've most appreciated is the tradeoff in work vs. yield for pasteurization vs. sterilization. I've lost a few batches after tons of "sterile" effort. Like you said, nothing at home will ever meet true sterile. Thank you!
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 8 месяцев назад
I have never cased my kings. I don't think it's worth the extra effort. If you have a good strain, they will do fine with no casing. I actually think the taller container is the way to go for kings, I think the container I used was pretty close to optimum dimensions for it's size. Whenever you are top fruiting with strains/species that have a tendency to produce waaaay too many pins like kings, you don't want to give them a lot of open surface area for fruiting. If you do, you will end up with a bazillion tiny mushrooms, many of which will abort. By limiting available fruiting surface, you will end up with fewer large mushrooms making for better quality mushrooms and easier picking.
@gdbeckett5723
@gdbeckett5723 8 месяцев назад
So it shall be on my next king grow! Instead of one larger monotub style, I'll go with several tall containers like you used. Or, I suppose similarly, just in-bag with a small area cut for top-fruiting. Many thanks, appreciate the tips. Happy holidays!

How did the yields compare to regular bag fruiting blocks? Love the idea of reusing those clamshells
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Год назад
The yields were pretty good for the kings, but relatively low for the ostreatus. Kings would be the way to go I think.

My king oyster pins got some blotch, not too sure why but aside from that the pins also have tiny caps with a wrinkly stems. I was thinking lack of humidity. However, the pins are brittle and very soft. I've got my exhaust set to 5 mins off and 5 min on. using the AC infinity 4'' exhasut. 205 CFM If I run 90 RH the tent appears to be too dry. Pretty frustrating right now.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 10 месяцев назад
Reduce your humidity a bit and clean your humidifier if you are seeing blotch, that happens to me sometimes too. Like most oyster species, kings love to make way more pins than they can nutritionally support. The soft wrinkly ones are aborts and that is totally normal. Typically mine will make a ton of pins and only 5 or 6 will develop into big boys.

New growing mushrooms. Cold shock? Does that simulate winter to make them fruit? Do the fruit better with cold shock?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 9 месяцев назад
That's exactly what it means, but all you have to do is put them in the fridge for 24 hours. It works well for cold tolerant species and often gives you faster and stronger first flushes. It is only used to stimulate the first flush and isn't necessary for additional flushes. The method should only be used with cold tolerant species because refrigerator temperatures (40 F) can harm or kill tropical species.

I have a noobie question, why you dont fill the entire container instead of using the little ones, im sorry if its a dum question
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 11 месяцев назад
You can't just upsize everything because you won't get adequate airflow to the core of your substrate. The substrate core will go anoxic and contaminate, ruining your grow. If you did a thin layer of substrate in a larger container, you would have way to much exposed surface area relative to your substrate volume. All that would get you is tons of tiny mushrooms making for tedious picking and poor cropping efficiency.

Well I only ever did it as a side hustle, but I used to sell a lot of fresh product. The key from what I've seen is ramping up your volume, and growing what your target customers are looking for. Sometimes you can get better prices for the sexy/specialty species like pink and golden oyster. Try to develop relationships with local chefs, preferably high end restaurants. They will usually appreciate your product more and pay better prices for it. Being close to the big city helps.
