Something I have found talking with older soapers like my great grandma is that they didn't make their soap with distilled water they made it from the water they had . She found that making your soap with the water you bathe in helps . So if you have hard water soap with hard water it causes the soap to work better with the water you wash with. Plus they did hot process back then
After I finished my science degree, I went and took a few courses as a chemist when I was interested in being a formulator for the cosmetic industry. The reason we use distilled water is because everything has been removed from it. Minerals, tiny solids, disinfectants (chlorine), fluoride, basically 99.99% of every impurity possible. These things when mixed with your soap or other products will lower the quality and shelf life depending on the levels of each contaminant in the water, since tap water varies significantly depending on location. It may make your products irritating to the skin, or in some cases unsafe. For instance, if a preservative should be used and is not, or not enough of it is used to make up for the extra work it needs to perform. That's the beauty of science, we're always finding ways to improve processes that have been around for centuries to make better products. I love hearing how they used to do things back when they had fewer options! :)
@@izzybizzy-v3j i have a question for you...is it really bad to wash hair with soap or castille soap...since it has been used in ancient history and sufficed
@@Fiiscreativemoods it has a higher pH then hair and skin but apart from that do what works best for you. They didn’t wash hair as much as we did. To high a pH in hair and scalp can cause dryness raise hair cuticles more static because of more negative charges leading to damage etc. If you go in with low pH conditioner or acidic rinse it should be alright. Actually a slightly higher pH shampoo paired with lower pH conditioner is optimal. Social media disclaimer- Everyone is different and what works for one might not work for another. I know people with long beautiful hair that just use saponified bar soap no conditioner on their hair. It couldn’t be me not for lack of trying.
Love, Love, Love! I can't tell you how much I have spent on ingredients for shampoo bars, BTMS is very expensive and the melt and pour is so cost effective and the right pH, it's a win win! just ordered some shampoo base:) Thanks again for all your great videos!
I think there is a switch that you can stop that from shutting of so quick. I'd have to look in my book but it is one of the switches at the back of the scale. Valerie
Ellen I went back and watched this a second time, I just had to check I hadn't missed anything the first time. But I hadn't, and I still can't believe how easy that looked, bearing in mind I haven't actually made any yet, but I'd been looking for recipes and different ways of making things and then came across yours and well it's like a dream come true. After seeing this I'm definitely giving it a go. Thank you so much for showing this and explaining everything so clearly so people like me can understand what the heck is going on. So thank you again from me Jane 😊🇬🇧 Forgot to mention you have another subscriber.
Ellen I just found your channel, and I have to say I’ll be back to learn more! I absolutely love how simple, rustic and pretty your wrapping is. Perfection!
Omg! Why have you just now shown up in my feed? I love, love, love this! The melt and pour, the eco friendly packaging, everything! New sub. I’m heading to your shop to make a purchase but I’m definitely making these as well. Next up: conditioner bars. I’ve been binging shampoo bars and this is the first I’ve found that I feel confident I can do. I mastered melt and pour soap years ago and still have a ton of bars, lol. I’m actually going to repackage them in your cute idea. Thank you!🙏
This is wonderful!! The list of ingredients to the recipe I had took up half my counter. It was mind boggling. A lot of ingredients and time went into the recipe and I kind of gave up, like you I would keep an eye out, but no bars. I was asked if I made them and had to say no. Can't wait to try this, so Thank you so much for sharing. The suds look very creamy. Cheers & Blessings 👍🤗
Beautiful shampoo bars, fantastic for travelling, no bottles and flight restrictions. A wonderful surprise for guests when staying over. Your bars are divine. 😍 😍
I too watched Katie's reviews on this shampoo base. Of course I bought it along with the conditioner base. I will be making some this week. Thank you Ellen for showing your process and how you wrap your beautiful soaps! I'm excited to try these. 💙
@@EllenRuthSoap i think you said you'll have a vid coming on the solid conditioner bars. I'd be curious to know your thoughts. I did make some, but it didn't hold my fragrance as well as the shampoo bars did and the lather was a very thin lotion it was hard for me to tell if I was covering my hair good. BUT my hair felt really great afterwards, minimal frizz and the next day no frizz. I did add mango butter to my shampoo base.
I saw Katie’s video on these too. I’ll be interested to see how they last in the shower and if there are any sweating issues with the unused bars. I might have to go buy some of the base to try out. 😉
I have used and the bars are great, but they do get a bit soft. I have since added a small percentage of the conditioner MP making the bars harder and conditioning as well! I made a couple weeks ago with the conditioner MP and the bars are not soft and they are still cleansing and conditioning!
I think a lot of us soapmakers saw Katie's video on this product. Thank you so much for sharing. I was curious to see if it was worth buying this base. ❤️
I ordered them on the release and have been using them since and I have noticed a significant difference in my hair and scalp. I added in 5g of shea butter per 16oz of syndet and have had 5 stars across the board🥰🙌🏻
Hi, I looked up this product info & ingredients, it sounds amazing! I’ll have to pick up a bar on my next order and try on my natural curly hair. I read in comments.. no frizz! Yes! Thank you for sharing, and congrats on your new product!!!
If I ever get things straightened out for my family and myself in our problems and get finances to do it id like to finally launch my business in soap. Question if u can answer how much do u personally profit ? From experience I know things we use can get very expensive so was wondering your personal situation in these terms.
Melt&pour soap became art because you made it!👏💗 The packaging is also very pretty! I'm really curious to see what Stephenson Melt & Pour Solid Shampoo Bar Base feels like!
This is an awesome shampoo bar recipe! I love the colors as well! I heard you say that you weren't able to find a good recipe before this. I found one on Elly's everyday soap making. She makes it with Apple cider vinegar. I have tried it, and I love it. I have long hair and it is dry on the ends and oily on the scalp, but when I have used her recipe, my hair feels so clean and soft. Just a little bit of info on that. I'm definitely going to try yours as well!
Hi Ellen! As for the scale, there's a setting you can change to make it so your scale stays on. Also, as long as it's plugged in, it shouldn't turn itself off, so it sounds like you need to check that setting. (Check the user manual). I'm definitely going to have to try this stuff! It looks so easy and quick to use! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this video. I haven't made soap or shampoo bars for a few years. But, you inspired my to do this one with the syndopour. They were super easy to make, and I love how they make my hair feel. This is a game changer.
I love your videos! I wasn't going to watch this one because it's melt and pour, but I'm so glad I did for many reasons! Thank you for what you do and sharing your process! 💚
I'm anxious to try this product as well. I recently purchased shampoo bar and hair conditioner recipes from another soaper. It is so nice. Lots of lather, not drying as well as the conditioner but the downside is the cost of all the ingredients. I'm hoping that this one is just as good. Thanks for the video
I purchased from the chemistry store the base is white and stays white. It doesn’t seem to stay as fluid as yours. Just made some hopefully it’s as good as yours. I purchased one of the ones you made I loved it.
My melt and pour soaps are very soft. How can I harden these. Plus can one add extra additives like oils or herbal extracts to ones' melt and pour base?
Thank you for taking the time to show us your beautiful DIY shampoo bars, Ellen. I have my S&C bases and I'm feeling extra motivated on this Friday night. I'm in love with your wrapping, too! Such simplicity! I wish there was smell-a-vision! God bless you and your business.
I also saw Katie's video and bought like, 8 packages lol. I've made facial cleansing bars with them and have been using them for about 2 months. My husband and I LOVE them. Next is shampoo bars. I have a few of my friends testing out the facial cleansing bars too.
@@EllenRuthSoap what is your take on the scent retention? Does it hold well? I realize we have to use the right level of fragrance but I'm curious if it holds well once used in hair. I notice my soaps don't always hold fragrance well once used on skin. Very few of them have a strong enough scent to linger on the skin.
I think you sold me on this soap. I have wanted to make shampoo and conditioner bars because I have been buying them and they're much better. I work fulltime and don't have a ton of time to do crafty stuff so this would work better for me. Just curious, when you sell these do you disclose that ita melt and pour??
What a fabulous video. Thank you for doing this. BTW, the chemistry store link goes to the stephenson melt and pour shampoo bar base, rather the synthdopour. Chemistry store does have both, but just wanted to give you a heads up :-)
Thanks Ellen for the video! I wanted to try the melt and pour shampoo bars and a few of your other items, so I just placed an order. I love all your videos!
I am addicted to your videos! Very easy to follow and such fun to watch. I do have a question on your labels for the shampoo bar. The base has quite the ingredient list and I'm wondering how you fit all that on your labels or do your refer to it as Stephenson shampoo base. Thank you for your videos!
I ordered some of the melt & pour shampoo base also (after watching Katie). I have allergies to the ingredients in commercial shampoos, so anxious to try this. I know my customers will be happy to try them too, as they have been asking for them for a while now. Thanks Ellen!
Hi Ellen. I was wondering about the base and concerns on some of the ingredients like propylene glycol that has been known to cause health issues related to skin and potential toxicity. I am trying to watch the chemical contents of my products since the skin is the largest organ. Thanks.
I love your videos, you are sharing with us your craft artistic skills and inspiration, we all small business owners really appreciate your support, thank with our hearts! ❤❤🥰
These are great! I did a market and a customer asked for shampoo bars, it doesn't get any easier than this. Wow. I love the design on the travel bars, do you know if they come in a larger size? I was just watching your video from about 3 years ago, when you did the pop up market, do you do those anymore? If so I would love to see an updated version.
OOOOOH I need to make that. Well I want to buy some from you. lol. So cute. I have a sensitive scalp so that should feel good on the scalp. Thank you for a great video! Just subscribed and liked. I will be binge watching you all night. lol. I am saving this video so I can make the shampoo bar. Make some for my sister.
Good afternoon, Ellen. First, I love your channel. I receive so much help and guidance from your channel. Second, I love how you wrap your shampoo bars. I decided to try it the same way; however, in this humidity, it appears the shampoo bar sweats through the coffee filter. What do you suggest to prevent this from happening? Thank you, again. Byrian
Hi Ellen! THank you for this video! Can you tell me if there Melt & Pour Soaps bleed through the paper wrapping? Melt & Pours typically have to be wrapped in plastic wrap or shrink wrap and I am wondering how the paper coffee filters react. Thank you!
Thank you Ellen for the interesting tutorial . Do I need to add a preservative to the mixture before pouring or the base already came with a preservative and i dont need to add extra. I hope to get a response from you soon Thanks in advance
Hi Ellen, thank you for doing these shampoo bars too. I was curious to see how others liked them. With regard to your scale, it should not be turning off too quickly! I use batteries and it works great. Maybe check the connections, batteries etc to be sure you don't have a dud!! 😉
I’m soooo glad you did a video on this! I’ve been sitting on my soap base since I too watched Katie’s video 😂I knew I wanted to personalize my shampoo but didn’t know what measurements I should use. I do have 1 question do you think that this soap base needs a preservative? That’s the only thing I’m stuck on because I do want to sell these
It doesn't need a preservative if you're only adding fragrance and color. But if you add botanicals, super fat or other "extras" you might want to add a bit.
I’m only halfway through your video and I just have to say THANK YOU! You make and share so many great recipes that have helped me grow as a soap maker. Your passion and excitement is palpable and I am giddy right there with you! My scalp is so sensitive, I think I will try this with tea tree to give my itchy scalp some relief. I didn’t know about this product either - I’m so excited!
I have the same scale and the time out is definitely aggravating; did you figure out how to turn that off? I tried following their instructions, but it never worked for me and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. 😅
Hi Ellen, I have that same scale. There’s actually a setting on the scale that allows it to stay on until you manually power it down. Look in the manual 🤗 I hope that helps. Hugs!
I enjoy using melt & pour for gifts since they don't take so long as the cold process. However cold Process holds up better in my opinion. I'm going to give the shampoo cars a try. Looks like fun & convienent to use! Thanks for giving us interesting projects to try!
You should be able to change the time on how long the scale light stays on. I love Katie!! I talk to her mom often. I've got a whole collection of her soaps that it's going to take me at least a yr or more to use them all!!! I've also got her whipped soap and sugar scrub however I've not tried her shampoo and conditioner bars. I'm kinda stuck on Chi from where I get my hair cut. It smells like a mix between bubble gum and bananas!! It smells so good!!! Even the hairspray smells like that.
Hi Ms. Ellen! I just did this recipe but halved your recipe because I've never made shampoo bars and didn't want to waste a lot of product if I made a mistake. I did 11.8 oz. of shampoo base and .1 oz of Crafter's Choice Coconut FO and .1 oz of Coconut Milk FO. I did not add color and I did the double boiler method at a slow simmer. I poured my mixture in a 6 ct. rectangular shaped cavity mold making four 3 oz. bars. As it is cooling in the molds I am seeing large craters developing on top which is not a big deal to me because this is for personal use. Any idea as to why craters have developed as it is cooling? Thank you!
Awesome! I seen Katie’s video as well! Super cool stuff! I noticed Sunshine Soap & Candle Co just put out a melt & Pour shampoo video too!! Great minds think alike!! 😊 I love your wrapping idea too! How did your hair feel after it was dry? I am tempted to buy a bar from you to try it first😊
I had seen Katie's video as well. You made me laugh so hard, when you mentioned about not taking us in the shower with you, not your thing. LOL Please give us an update on how long they last, the sweating issues (is it weather sensitive, humidity, heat, etc), how did your hair reacted once dried? What it smooth, frizzy, very dry? Thanks have a great day!
yes! I am excited to hear the results too, how they withstand heat is very important, knowing how your hair felt later is too..hope you update us..thanks for sharing!
Hello! I am wondering if a small amount of additional additives can be added to the shampoo bar base such as an extract to promote hair growth, a carrier oil, or panthenol in powder form? Thank you!
Thank you for making this video! Question-- How well did the bars harden up after you poured them in the molds? In Katie's review, she said they were really soft and crumbled a bit, or might not hold up in shipping? My concern would be shipping in the heat. Now I really want to try one, so I can know if its something I would want to make.
Just curious if in the future you’ll try adding in some different additions like particular oils or extracts for different hair types. Was there any information about that where you purchased?
Ellen - since this is melt and pour, does that mean you need to wrap them right away? I'm guessing yes. I can't wait to see your video for the conditioner bars. Also - can you put essential oil in the shampoo bars instead of fragrance oil? BTW - I love watching all your videos.
