Today another simple design. I quilt within a large square, 18 inch large. I divided it into diagonal stripes. The central one is 2 inch wide. After that I alternated between 3 inch and 1 inch stripes. The division was super easy. Then I used only two alternating designs: ribbon candy and paisleys. The difference in the shape and density creates wonderful texture. Two designs and simple stripes…. This is it. Sometimes less is more

I love the two designs ! They are one of my favorites. Thankyou for your tutorials. I too struggle with what design to use and it feels great when you get that " aha" , that's the one!

Hi there! Thank you for your comment. I think that sometimes we overthink the selection process. I lerned the hard way, that the long thinking process did not give me the result I wanted and more than once I changed the concept mid quilting. As it was always in the center, I sold it as concpet design....The main point is to add texture. The series is about using the simple approach and your fovorite designs. It will look good at the end❤❤❤

I know how it is! Every time I have to travel I am packing handquilting or some EPP , because I am a farbic and thread addict. I hope you will have safe travel home so you can relax and quilt! ❤❤❤

Love it! The ribbon candy works with any design. The paisleys too are so versatile edpecially in awkward spaces. Thank you for sharing!

Hi there! Thank you for your comment! Yes, Ribbon candy is wonderfully versatile. I love to use it. And the paisleys could be exchanged by swirls or any other overall design. The trick is in the change of density and the dynamics of the design. ❤❤❤

I love swirls so they would likely have been my first choice. However, the paisleys turned out nice. This piece has a lovely textural effect.

Hi there! That was the goal. I also love the swirls, but I just used them in my previous video and I want to keep things fresh. It is also good to show that any of such designs would work. Thank you for your comment!. ❤❤❤

I love paisleys, one of my very favorite shapes to do and I can't mess that one up, LOL. I started quilting my quilt, but oh my, I suck at ruler work! This one is turning out to be a challenge. I felt with the very distinct, graphic shapes, this ought to have some ruler quilting/dot-to-dot. I have a difficult time with ruler work, never comes out the way I envision. But, I'm committed now and I'm taking what Angela Walters says to heart-if you goof up, just keep making echo lines and quilt all around it and it won't be as noticeable. But because the lines are straight-ish (you'd think they would be really straight with a ruler but not when it's in *my* hands), my goofs are not easy to hide. This quilt was great, even started out pretty nicely...until got past the center of the medallion, then I ended up in the weeds, as the saying goes. The machine is a dream, so not her fault, all mine. A masterpiece it won't be, no even come close. At least my machine is not the culprit this time. It's like a train wreck-you can't look away from the disaster, but with quilting, you see it getting worse and you just...can't...STOP! At least I'm doing it, but it may take me awhile to get my mojo back. I'm going to add some more truly organic, rounded shapes tomorrow when I continue and we'll see how it goes. I wish I could do ribbon candy as well as you do! I am getting better at wishbones, though, at least! God bless, my friend ~Cynthia

Dear Cynthia, if you would be one of my class I would (Ok not yell) but give you a very stern talking to. Positive things: the machine works great! this is the solid base for your quilting now and in the future. Second, you listen to the guru Angela Walters. She has tons of common sense and practical thinking. And I agree with her totally. Please stop expecting perfection from you every time you start doing something. The quilt will be not a disatster. I am sure it will look great in the end. There are few tricks to change your perception. You are too close to your quilt when you sit at the machine. take your sandwich and go to the mirror. Look at the reflection of your quilt. it will force you to look at the texture overall. everytime I am not sure about my designs I do exactly that. I am always surprised how well it looks in the refletion! you are human Cynthia, we can make mistakes. Maybe this quilt is not supposed to be a masterpiece (you are not at the end of your life yet). Maybe it is supposed to be a testimony of your journey as a quilter and your development in acceptance of who you are....what was the name of the block again....❤❤❤

@@quiltingnerd Yes ma'am, I am properly chastised, LOL! That's the perfectionist in me trying to get out and wreak havoc again. Yes, I actually took a photo of it and of course, at a distance, it looks fine, but I do have some ideas on how to fix it and do better going forward. I'll try your reflection method as well. It really is a disaster in some areas, but maybe I can make those less noticeable somehow. The block is a 20" block called God's Eye. It's one of my favorite blocks of all time. I bet you could do fabulous things with it. I found it years ago on a site called Quilters Cache. It has very good instructions and a 3 star for its difficulty rating. If you're not familiar, the patterns are listed alphabetically as well as by sizes.

@@frontporchwigchat6260 a disaster is when a tornado hits....I am sure your quilt is lovely and even if quilting is not up to your expectations, for sure it is just more of a creative disagreement between your concept and the execution 😅😁🤣. sometimes you need to listen what your quilt wants.... I learned that the hard way!

@@quiltingnerd sorry for the confusion replying with the wrong channel ID! I used to have that channel for women. Anyway, I love this: "a creative disagreement between your concept and the execution". I'm going to remember and use that saying, if you don't mind. It's the perfect summary of the issue!

The two designs offset each other really nicely. I love paisleys. I’ve just confiscated a jelly roll quilt top from my MIL (long time quilter who is just learning about pre-cuts) and have been thinking about the quilting. I think I can use this idea and quilt out every second row of strips. I wish I had a ruler foot, would love to try that technique. Thanks for the info, I often take screen shots and add to my file of pattern ideas!

Thank you! Jelly roll quilts are nice for quilting. for long stripe units this is a good idea. Please let me know how it is going. And depending on your machine, you may get a ruler foot. You have to check the model of your machine and ask in the lcoal shop. They are getting popular now. ❤❤❤

Your ribbon candy was definitely done with a ruler. Just kidding, but it is so perfect. I would not have believed anyone could make perfect ribbon candy without a ruler. Again I’m enjoying watching you quilt.

I am blushing right now! Thank you!!!! it was a strugle when I started quilting. But quilting it in every sashing stripe on a large quilt did the trick. Also making the videos for YT. I have one on ribbon candy, where it made a click. I love this pattern. It gives this plum, juicy texture to any element. ❤❤❤

I am mesmerized watching this. I am getting ready to free motion a quilt and just keep putting it off because it scares me. Do you watch the cloth more or the needle! I tend to get lost or found I’m stuck in a corner. Definitely going to find your videos and watch and learn!!

Hi Kathi, If you hit the subscriber button you will have very easy job of finding the videos ;) I have playlists sorted according to the subject: basic quilting, block quilting, relaxed quilting... And I know how scare it is to start a new activity. It will get easier if you accept that the first few tries will be far away from your expectations. But I can tell you that I watched many reluctant patchwork makers learn how to quilt and they are awsome !
