Tom Petty was from north Florida as were Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchett and .38 Special etc . The whole Gainesville to Jacksonville area was a hotbed for Southern Rock! Edit: Shinedown is also from Jacksonville and they have a tribute cover of Simple Man that is amazing
I know I'm only 23 but so far, this is the song I want played at my funeral. It exactly says what I think and feel, I am a simple man with simple pleasures, no greed, no ego, just simple family love and trying my best. Can you react to Tuesday's Gone please
If I remember correctly, in a documentary about the band, it was said that the record label execs told them no one would want to hear Freebird because it was too long and they shouldn't do Simple Man either. Not the first nor the last artist to know better than those in charge.
Producer Al Kooper was totally against the band recording this song, so much so that they sent him home and said they would call him when they were finished the song.
Bob Seger was my first concert when I was 7 years old and I've been into rock and roll ever since. Alto Reed just spoke to me when he played the saxophone on Turn the Page
I went to their (Rock N Roll Never Forgets) tour in 2013. Joe Walsh opened for them! I love them both a lot, but Joe Walsh brings so much energy that it felt like the energy level dropped quite a bit once Bob came on. It was still a great concert though.
@@Porkchop999 Hahaha SEC rivalry emerges even on a youtube video about Lynyrd Skynyrd from English content creators! A band from Florida. Go Gators! Gonna be a fun season boys.
Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer, He and most of the band died in 1977 in a plane crash. His brother joined the remaining band members and took over as lead singer. This band is the quintessential southern rock band. Whenever someone mentions "southern rock" Lynyrd Skynyrd is the first band people think of. Maybe Charlie Daniels band, but this band more than anything. Sweet Home Alabama is THE southern rock anthem.
The lead singer died in a plane crash about 100 miles from me. He smiled when told they were going down. No seat belt. Others died, too. Ran out of gas. His son took over vocals, but he was the driving force of the band.
The crash happened in October of 1977 after doing a concert here where I live in Greenville, South Carolina. 6 of the 26 people were killed, including the lead singer, Ronnie VanZant. His younger brother took over singing for the band after that. 😪 You MUST do "Free Bird" if you haven't already (preferably the live version)!! ** My first time @ your channel - enjoyed it very much!👍
I’m from Greenville too. My brother-in-law was at that show. I was only 9 when it happened, but I remember it vividly. One of the greatest bands ever! Great reaction guys!!
@@carolinagothic7243 - HEY, Thanks for replying💟 I would have loved to have been at that concert, ESPECIALLY given what happened, but I had sadly just suffered a miscarriage and was still recovering. I have gotten to see them since then though (@ Harrah's in NC & front row - deaf for days!) I, too,, still remember that horrible day of the crash, but I'm really glad your brother-in-law got to be at that last concert to see Ronnie, etc.!
Lead singer and founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd was Ronnie Van Zant, who died in the plane crash of October 20th 1977, along with one of the three guitarists, Steve Gaines, and Steve's sister Cassie Gaines. There's only one surviving original member, guitarist Gary Rossington.
The band hails from Jacksonville Florida. Im from there. My uncle was a musician and was very well acquainted with the Van Zants, Rossingtons and Collinses. He was devastated when the plane crashed and killed Ronnie.
If you react to Free Bird make it the video where that open for the Stones in London. The stage had a tongue. They were told they were not allowed to perform on the tongue. In true southern tradition they played the on the tongue. ❤ from Tennessee.
The band that is out playing today is essentially a tribute band. The original band was in a plane crash in 1977 that killed the lead singer Ronnie Vansant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and Steve's sister, back up singer Cassie Gaines. Over the years other members of the band have passed away or left the band. Now the only original member that is left is Gary Rosington. Very sad. The Band was cut down in their prime. Ronnie Vansant was also the primary song writer.
What's more amazing to me than anything about them is when they were signed they knew almost nothing about writing music. Pure, raw talent got them their contract.
its interesting watching people from other countries listen to this. I know these sentiments are universal but for us who grew up in the South, they are almost scripture
I have played this song for my boys their entire lives and have tried to encourage them to take the words to heart. Shiny cars, big houses and fat wallets don't mean ANYTHING if you're not staying true to yourself and have joy in what you do. Although Lynyrd Skynyrd are the GOAT, check out Shinedown's cover of "Simple Man" they take it to a whole other level.
My son is 13 and as his mother I have had him listen to this song since he was young. I just want my boy (young man) to be a simple man. Beautiful song.
The backstory of this was like Ronnie's (the band founder and front man) grandmother died the same time as Gary's (one of their guitarists) mother and the lyrics were put together by them sharing stories of their deceased loved ones
the original singer who was also the main songwriter ( ronnie van zant ) died in the plane crash back in 1977. no one wanted to use the plane because it had many problems but ronnie talked them into taking this last trip with it.
I hope u guys have mama’s that love you this much. My son is gone allot and he travels in his band on tour. I needed him to know how much I love him and this song is the one I chose. You all deserve good mama’s like I said… it is the perfect song to a son I have ever heard…thank you guys!!
One of the three best southern rock bands ever. The Allman Brothers and The Marshall Tucker Band are the other two. You cannot go wrong with either one of them..that’s a fact!!
@@stickybandit4065 CCR and Doobies were indeed fine groups ! BUT the topic was * Southern * Rock groups , and alas CCR and Doobies weren't . Actually the threesome of LS , Allmans , and Marshall Tucker is an inspired grouping . You can argue " Best " all day long , and it's ultimately subjective . But those three uniquely illiustrate the Scope of Southern Rock . Allmans include Jazz and improvisational elements . Marshall Tucker Band give deep homage to the Country Roots of Southern Rock . And of course LS has huge breadth of styles , particularly when you include the album cuts in addition to the major hits .
@@filianablanxart8305 If it’s just bands from the south then you have .38 Special, still better than MTB. Obviously it’s subjective, so no judgement if you disagree.
Give "They Call Me the Breeze", by Skynyrd. They say if you wanted to know what Ronnie Van Zant was like; pick any3 tunes he penned...that was Ronnie. I loved the discussion Guys! This is one of my favorites from y'all! Thank you!!!
When I hear this song, and particularly SEE the video and having you Blokes review it, it makes me think what we already know. England and America are worth any fight...I am very glad we are friends true, and allies....peace then...
Great song. Never forget watching them at the Sam Houston Colosseum 1976. Standing on my eleventh row chair during Firebird with my cousin passed out next to me. Got the Skynyrd album with the fire cover that was pulled after the plane crash. Last saw them at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, 60,000+ about twenty years ago. Between them and ZZ Top as my favorites.
You raise your kids to be independent and self sufficient but when they move away it tears your heart out. 3 of my 4 kids live away now and it hurts not seeing them regularly.
The name of the band was from the high school gym teacher at their high school who decried their long hair. They developed a friendship with him later on.
I have no idea if u guys have seen walk hard the Dewey cox story or not, but after watching u guys I'd say they nailed the part where they're portraying the Beatles bcuz every time I watch u guys u remind me of that scene!
The biggest loss in the plane crash was Ronnie Van Zant, the singer, the one member that was truly irreplaceable, though Steve Gaines was an incredible guitaris and also equally missed. Ronnie was the keystone of the band, you just can't go find another singer/songwriter like that.
Funny you mentioned Tom Petty. This style of music is classic southern rock and it defiantly has a feel to it. Try Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet or The Marshall Tucker Band for more southern rock.
My son is 44 and never live more the 5 miles from home, three years ago he married an English girl and moved to London. It feels funny but I’m glad I have facetime
Fair play from Daz. Tom Petty is an absolute master, gone from this world too soon, same as Ronnie from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Tom Petty falls into a category people call "Heartland Rock" like Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, and Bruce Springsteen. I REALLY love that genre. It's like country music for Midwesterners basically lol. It's all the "down home" feel of country music but it's not about the South and if you're like me, the twang of country really can get on my nerves
Strange that you guys brought up Tom Petty, who is from Gainesville, Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, Florida, which is only about 70 miles away. This is really close by US standards.
U guys need to react to - Shinedown "Simple Man". Many other Vocal Coaches/Music producers have reacted to it, due to how popular n loved by the fans over the original (not that the original is not good). It is considered one of the best Covers ever done.
I know you've heard the song but can you react to Free Bird live at Oakland? It'll be great to see you react to all the sunburnt teens making out with each other and see the band jam out on the stage. It's a real good experience
You have look into mussel shoals it was a recording area and sessions that recorded some of the most unique music for many years including lynard skynard and so many others
I seen them go up on stage at a bar when the regular band took a break. No one realized who the were until they started playing. What a show. Brits with Southern rock, brilliant. Petty may sound a bit like Skynard, not the other way around.
