One of my most popular recipes on RU-vid! Find the written recipe for this salad here: thebitewithjac... Try topping it with my chicken shawarma: thebitewithjac... #simplesalad #salad #arabicsalad
Hi! Many of you have requested the full ingredient list for this recipe. You can find it here along with all my other recipes: thebitewithjackie.com/simple-middle-eastern-salad/ When you make this, let me know your thoughts by rating and leaving a comment under the recipe on my blog! Also: Contrary to popular belief, there is in fact NO meth in this salad. It is SUMAC. In Arabic, we say it "sm-MAC" or "sm-MA'" so I understand the confusion. Hope this helps!
@@hoosiernative9668 It is best to avoid eating tomatoes and cucumbers together because their digestive processes are radically different. Eating these two can cause an imbalance in the body's acidic pH, which can result in bloating.
We call it kochjholl in eastern india with extra indigenous spices, stems of water lilies ,lotus seeds ,mustard oil and scented oil of barukumbi flower it really gives a Restaurant like vibe.
the origins are in Mexico, native already ate a salad that consisted of cilantro, tomatoes and chile peppers, with the introduction of onions via colonization, it was later incorporated, and it called salsa bandera aka flag salsa because it represents the colors of Mexico
You know, I've never had Sudanese food, I dont know of any restaurants in my area. But I'm with you, it goes with everything! Its so good with cilantro, I've never tried it with arugula but I bet it would be delish!
I'm from Manila. In my family, we have a similar salad with onions, tomatoes, roasted eggplant, cucumber, olive oil, soy sauce, and calamansi (Philippine lime). It's good with crisp fried fish ❤
We make a salad that is very similar pico de gallo as well! It's on my site as "salata falahiyeh" - farmers style salad. Instead of lime and cilantro, we use lemon and parsley. So many similarities with our food!
That’s not pico de gallo. Just cause it looks like it, it doesn’t mean it’s the same. Pico de gallo only has tomato, onion, jalapeño and cilantro and lime juice. So just stop
This is not Pico de Gallo. While this dish has chopped tomato and onion in it, the addition of cucumber, mint, lemon juice, olive oil, etc. give it a different flavor profile than a Mexican salsa
Made this last night after watching this video it turned out great . I used cucumber, tomatoes, onions, fresh chopped garlic, oil, vinegar, lime juice, salt, pepper, oregano & Italian seasoning
Fantastic! Thanks for this. It might not be complicated from the outset, but when we have this from an Arab household, we keep thinking as to what went into it to make it this awesome. Thank you again. This is a favorite of mine.
So many good recipes..just got too find more people to eat it all.. IAM so busy trying all these. I do make this salad but didn't know to add radish to add radish !!.. I thank you for parting with all these good ideas.. Blessings
@@TheBitewithJackie Wow!! I’ve been making this salad for years, for the Israelí family I work with. In addition to the cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and parsley, I sometimes change it up and add corn, radishes, carrots, beets and cilantro (with lemon&olive dressing). We definitely have sumac in the spice cabinet 😊 Thanks for the other suggestions and for sharing your posts!!
This looks great! Growing up, my parents made it with cucumbers, tomatoes, salt, pepper, parsley, and lemon juice. I personally like to add cilantro and a little bit of lettuce too!
I was about to say that, Pakistani and Indians make this salad. I'm from a Punjabi background and we make this salad with raita on the side. It's yogurt with mint chutney blended together. It's best with biryani, simple salad, and raita. The raita helps cool down the heat from the biryani. Bon appetit 😋
@@TheBitewithJackie - ***cut*** Idk what the heck the name Alice came from!!!!! LOL. I also remove that top hard “thingie” (for lack of a better word).
We make this exact salad but sometimes we add beans or chickpeas to make it more filling. Also, we like to add pomegranate molasses to the dressing 🤌🤌🤌🤌😋
I promise you can get anyone to eat salad making it this way! Even if you don’t have everything, simply dicing tomato & cucumber tiny like this, with cilantro a little salt, a little vinegar olive oil and a squeeze of lemon if you have it👌 chefs Kiss! If you don’t have olive oil lemon or cilantro it’s still good w just a little salt and vinegar & any veggies.
I have done quite similar salad (don't even remember how many years). I add some chickpeas and sometimes also couscous. Every versions of this salad is so DELICIOUS! 😋👌
In Russia we call it Cucumber and Tomato (=Ogurchik i Pomidorka) and it is by far the most commonly eaten salad. We often add onion, bell pepper, radishes and any fresh herbs that we like. In summer it drowns in herbs from the garden, so we call this variety "summer salad". We usually use salt and extravirgin sunflower oil or extravirgin olive oil, sometimes lemons and hot pepper and very rarely vinegar or spices. It's my favourite!
Sumac is the key ingredient that for some reason she omitted naming it clearly in the video, though she did add to make this Salad Shirazi. Don’t forget to add it. It’s the true umami for this famous salad that you can find variations of throughout Middle East ( but in my unbiased view the best of them is this one, called salad Shirazi from Iran!)
I did not omit naming it. I called it by its Arab name "sm-MAC". Not "soo-mac". This version is Arabic salata. In my experience, shirazi salad doesn't contain sumac, and uses ab-ghooreh or extra lemon instead. They're very similar and we eat them the same way!
@@TheBitewithJackie Arab or Persian, I did say they're all variations of the same salad found throughout the middle east, and Sumac is added to the Salad Shirazi that I'm familiar with. I've never tried it with ab-ghooreh but worth trying I guess. I actually add avocado to my version and it's delicious and creamy.
Wow. I think the coolest part is coming to the comments and seeing what this salad means to middle eastern people, yet it isn’t dividing just proving how much we all have in common :) thanks for sharing!!!
I love that as well! Seems like so many countries have their own variation of this from pico de gallo, ceviche, shirazi salad, this version, so many good ones.
As a middle eastern, I looooove this salad, its so crunchy and flavorful, I'd reccomend adding black beans or chickpeas to give a bit more variety in texture. Plus feta cheese if you're fancy.
So happy to hear that! I’d love it if you could write a review of the salad under the recipe on my website thebitewithjackie.com. I’m excited to hear your thoughts!
