Simple Minds - I travel 1980
(Instrumental)
Cities, buildings falling down
Ideal homes falling down
These pictures I see on the wall
Timeless leaders stand so tall
Assassin in a hit and run
Asia steals a new born son
Evacuees and refugees
Presidents and monarchies
Travel round
I travel round
Decadence and pleasure towns
Tragedies, luxuries, statues, parks and galleries
Travel round
I travel round
Decadence and pleasure towns
(Instrumental)
Europe has a language problem
Talk, talk, talk, talk, talking on
In central europe
Men are marching
Marching on and marching on
Love songs playing in the restaurants
Airport playing Brian Eno
Travel round
I travel round
Decadence and pleasure towns
Tragedies,luxuries,statues,parks and galleries
Travel round
I travel round
Decadence and pleasure towns
(Instrumental)
Travel round
I travel round
Decadence and pleasure towns
Tragedies,luxuries,statues,parks and galleries
(Instrumental)
Europe has a language problem
And in central europe
Men are marching

This is from the band's best period - after the experimental phase of their first two records and before the pop commercialism of their latter day stuff. It includes the albums from 'Empires and Dance' (which this song is from) through 'Sparkle in the Rain'. I saw them live on the 'New Gold Dream' tour and it ranks as one of the most memorable shows I've seen. Their onstage energy and dynamism was brilliant and Kerr was one amazing frontman.

I dunno about that. By this time we were already comfortable w the skanking of the Two-Tone & Go Feet labels funk of post-punk (Bush Tetras, GoF, PiL etc) and snappy synth pop (Depeche Mode, OMD etc) and these guys were in good New Romantics company alongside Spandau Ballet w Duran Duran et al just months away. I spun in 'punk' clubs back then. Danceability was always critical to the crowd. But, yes, absolutely an early sign of things to come (the beat-driven New Wave). Still my fave SM track.

Me too. I want to timetravel back to the first half of the 80s and never come back again! Loved the simplicity, the more laissez faire attitude in The NEtherlands. The clubs even in my 40K town with so much variety in music and people (New wave, Punk, Hard rock etc) and we all got along well. When we as 14-15 year olds did something with fireworks that was not allowed, the return was kind and even the police realised we were kids (nowadays you get punished, 80 hours work or something like it), Etcetc. Not the fear of loss of control, not fear of risks like we have nowadays. Far less complex, less rules, less restrictions, less fake people with fake faces and an attitude. And nice girls who were not so prudish (topless on the beach was the norm back than on Dutch beaches). Yes, I am glad I was a teenager in the 80s and not afterwards. And this music takes me back to those fantastic days.

I saw them 30/10/81, in a little Canadian prairie town during what was (I think) their first North American tour. I'd recently bought the 12" single of "Love Song". It was a frosty night, people were wearing goth-y Halloween stuff. Maybe 200 of us? The venue was an unheated sheet metal curling rink, and was poundingly loud. Jim Kerr rotating around, hugging himself dramatically (against the cold, probably). I recall thinking that he was the closest thing to Bowie I was ever likely to see.

wow I used to dance to this as a teenager at the function suite in Nero's Cardiff in the eighties. It was an 'alternative' night full of great tracks not from the charts but this is the song I used to wait for. Its wonderful with echos of Kraftwerk and Bowie's Berlin trilogy and Eno of course which Kerr makes reference to in a moment of playful post-modernism. It makes you wonder how they lost their way a few years later trying to compete with the stadium air punching routines of Bono/U2.

well this stands the test of time. they weren't even peforming, just faking it over the studio recording. what's great is there's none of Kerr's on stage silliness. just pure fuck it attitude. he looks sleek, just killer. god damn those studio vocals are so brilliant, full of details, odd nuance. a true original this is the Jim Kerr I want to remember

One of the best …if not THE best of Simple minds back when their sound was more electronic

From the glory days before Jim lost his mind and woke up one day thinking he was Bono's long lost brother

Great comment Chris - they were the greatest band on the planet and then they (sadly) decided to become a poor man's U2... I fell in love with the band that wrote this, Celebrate, Sweat in bullet ( and so many others) plus the unbelievable Love song... Saw them in Birmingham a few years ago and hated the fact that 98% of the audience only knew the crap written since Don't you forget about me...

In this sad journey you speak of 'Belfast Child' has to be the low point. A truly awful fall from 'The American' to that shite!
