I was asked to show more on the easy use of Woodturner Pro.
A simple piece of software that can make your first segmented wood turning easy. It also will help you understand how segmented turning works in general.
It is a wonderful piece of software that I purchased a number of years ago.
You can find a 30 day trial for the software. It is the full program with all the features.

Gary, this was very informative. I have this program and am getting back to turning after adding on to my shop and rearranging things. I am going to do some straight sided platters and then try something like you did in this video. I have some padauk, just need to get some maple.

Thanks you Tom. I have a CAD program called Bobcad. I bought for software to create things and also make files to run on my CNC. I still use it for a lot of segmented turnings. Like the one I am working on now. Mostly to get the right dimensions to make a dizzy bowl style turning. Thanks for watching, Gary

I went on a segment spree, turned for relatives and my favorite doctors, I have a few. Then I got more into natural turnings. I enjoy making something out of what might appear to be nothing. That don't mean I don't love the master pieces you produce. Looking forward to your next piece.

Thanks Gerald. I probably do more turnings from logs than segments. Mostly segment work can take a lot more time. But I love them both about the same. Also I like stave turnings which are lots of fun. Take care, Gary

Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart in clarifying segmented turning. This is exactly what I need to start down this path. I will be purchasing this very soon. BTW, I purchased a Wen Air Filter unit for my shop. It surely removes that residual wood dust from the air that settles everywhere. I think I picked up an allergic reaction to wood dust over the holiday time. So when you say “dust mask and face shield” on, now I know why. Might want to add a hazmat suit to keep the dermatitis at bay. Lol!

It is fun software to just play around with for sure. There are lots of times I just open it up with nothing in mind and see what I come up with. For sure you can do the same with paper and pencil. I did that for years at work laying out the patterns from a drawing on large sheets of paper just to figure out how I would construct them. The 30 day trial is a full blown version so a good way to have a look at it. Take care, Gary

Thank you for watching. I find it to be another great tool to have. The 30 day trial is a good way to look at the software. Not sure what happens after 30 days. Some software will not open and some will just not let you save your work. Not trying to sell it but getting all the dimension right can save a lot of money in wasted cuts on expensive wood. Just my 2 cents on that. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Patrick. I know that Segmente Pro is very easy to use but I find it limiting in designing my own shapes. I hardly ever use it at all. Woodturner Pro gives me many more options that I like such as moving segments around to save wood and also to modify my shape.

Although a number of CAD programmes I'm familiar with - including the "Wood turning pro" shown - Oh I do wish all this was available in my youth. My life, and many others, would have been much more simple. Quite often though if I print the design I draw in a centre line - if one is omitted. I still refer to my past and consider a datum line or face is important. I still enjoy setting a design out and using geometric construction - much of which appears to have been forgotten. Thank you Gary for another informative video. Many - as I - appreciate it!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
I agree with you on wishing these programs were around years ago. As a wood pattern maker I had to make a layout of everything I made. I would use trig to layout all the angles. Even segments were all laid out and cut one at a time using a bandsaw and a disk sander to sand to the line. But they were way to big for a wedgie sled which was not even thought of back then. I still prefer some of those older ways of doing things. Thanks for watching, Gary

I have been using Woodturner Pro for over 20 years. It is great. I thought your explanations were good but could have been a bit more detailed. It's hard for me to follow the cursor when someone else it moving it. In my opinion, some narration about where on the screen you are working would be in order. Like you I also love 3D Design Pro. You can do some crazy shapes with that program. And like you mentioned, it's free with Woodturner Pro. You have to buy Woodturner Pro but the support is well worth it. Thank you for sharing. Gary, thanks so much for the detailed, informative follow-up video; it is very much appreciated. As crazy as it might seem, I'm curious if you have ever designed something with the software that you didn't like after turning it? If so, why was that?
@ThePapa1947

Hi Grant and thanks for watching. So far I have liked everything I have done. But the great thing is it should look a lot like the design. Although I still make final adjustments at the lathe. But I am working on something I designed on Woodturner Pro and am not sure how it will turn out. You will be seeing that soon. Take care, Gary

Hi Gary: Glad to hear that your are recovering well and will soon be back in the shop doing more woodturning videos. I very much enjoyed this video and have been wondering about this software as I have seen it at some point in the past. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this software and yes it does look very easy to use. I expect that there will be a number of purchases of this software following your video and I will be one of those making that purchase. Thanks again and best wishes from Prince Edward County, Ontario Canada. Ted M

Always enjoy your videos. All are well done. I looked at Woodturner Pro a few months ago and used it very little. So I let the trial issue expire. But now that I saw it in action, may I will buy the software. I got a little discouraged with the feature ring software that is separate from the Woodturner Pro and perhaps the reason why I did not buy the entire package. Will need to revisit all of software that goes along with Woodturner Pro.

Thanks for the tutorial. I am in the early stages of leaning this software. I have replicated your steps and have a design but I'm stumped on the what would be the final turned wall thickness. I don't know what it is or how to change it. Would I just design a smaller internal diameter and turn it down?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
Thank you Tom. It would be easy to change the inside diameters to make sure you had stock. If I knew more of what the shape was you have I could help. You should be able to drag the inside lines to help with that shape as well. Then snap the segments to fit that. Let me know if this makes sense. Gary

Very interesting! Maybe someone can explain to me how you cut these segments. Many have lengths or widths that requires precision to the thousandth of an inch. Can one do that on a one of the sleds like the wedges sled? Do you round the values to th tenth of an inch?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
Yes I use a wedgie sled to make my segments. i have used a miter saw but a wedgie sled is much better. When I first made segments it was for wood patterns I made at work for foundry use. We cut those on a band saw and sanded the ends on a disk sander. This was long before segment bowl turning came to be. Yes you can round it to a tenth of an inch but I use a digital caliper so I do make them to what the program comes up wiht. thanks for watching. I will do a video on wedgie sleds if needed. Gary

Hi James, what you can do is highlight all the rows and then change the size. You would need to change the outside and inside diameter and also change the thickness of the rings. If you would it reduced by 75% then change those numbers using by that amount. Hope that helps, Gary

@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
I can understand that. I learned and worked with imperial dimensions. It is what I know. When I watch something that is done in metric I have a little idea what it will be but if not I convert it. Kind of like when I get a lot of comments not in English so I convert them and respond in the viewers language. Trust me that is a lot of work. Because lasers seem to be mostly metric I keep the speed of the laser in metric. Not sure why it is just what I started doing. Thanks for watching, Gary

@ThePapa1947 it is from Woodworkers Supply (looks like they are New Mexico) Woodturner Pro Suite V3 Designed by Lloyd Johnson, Woodturner Pro Suite V3 offers three woodturning software applications in one package: 3D Design PRO lets you create a two dimensional vessel wall profile and then see a rendering in three dimensions. Start from scratch or open one of over 100 sample drawings. Designed for all woodturners, not just segmented turners. Woodturner PRO allows you to add rings - flat, compound, staves and veneer - to your designs with a single mouse click. Decide how many segments per ring and use arrow keys to identify outside and inside diameters. Lamination PRO helps your design and construct feature rings for segmented vessels from laminations. the price said $60.00 I'm not sure if this is the same, please let me know as I would like to purchase this software.
