@@ourkaravan I echo all of the other compliments for your design, expertise, and ability to explain. I am beginning the plumbing part of my build and I was hoping you might have scouted out the hot water solution by now. I was thinking the 2.5 gallon Bosch. Would I need to feed hot and cold from separate tanks? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, oh Wise One!! ;-)
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 2 года назад
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words! I found I don’t need hot water at the sink but I do have an on demand propane unit I use off the rear doors for showering. No need for separate water tanks for hot and cold. If you Google Bosch hot water heater and van you should come up with some plumbing layouts, it’s pretty straight forward.

A lot of people are very unaware of the body holes/plugs under their vehicles. Putting a mesh filter and a screen over them would make for good cross ventilation in some applications without making more holes in the vehicle. Good application for a Gray Drain location!!!! There are larger ones in the rear near the bumpers of most cargo vehicles!!! Thanks for sharing

I'll be curious to see how it does when connected to a gray water tank. I suspect it will drain slowly, but we shall see.

Beware any dynamic pressure differences when the van is in travel, especially off highway. Dust may intrude unless one ensures positive cabin pressure relative to pressure outside the van at that opening point. Best to keep these sealed when in motion.

Always look forward to the latest installment to your van build...In case you have a problem with the hose curling up...I used to install chemical system where we had to feed a hose down in a 55 gallon drum (similar to your food grade hose in your fresh water can). However, we used a clear braided (smelly) hose, but it would curl-up and the hose would not lay all the way down to the bottom of the drum. We added a mesh filter at the end of the hose and cut a small PVC sized to the OD of the hose and installed that. It weighted it down to the bottom perfectly and was no problem after that.
@kevinshea4776
@kevinshea4776 5 лет назад
kenetube it was more a ceramic weight (I said PVC). That held the hose down to the bottom. The size was like a 1 hollowed D-Cell battery made of a ceramic material that fit at the end of the 3/4” tube. The screen filter weighed next to nothing. I worked in the car wash industry and you could possibly find the hose weight there in a car wash supply catalog. All the best to you!

Great system you’ve put together thanks for researching and linking it all up for us. Might have to use this system for my van. Going back and forth about having a hose style hookup vs the jugs. I’ve been using a jug in the van for drinking water and it’s kind of a pain carrying that thing around full of water!
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 5 лет назад
Think of it this way, if there's a hose available for hookup, then you don't need to move the jugs anywhere, you can fill in-place. If a hose is not available, the jugs give you the freedom to go to the water source. It works great for me but understandably some people will want something different. Thanks for watching!
@TrailBoundco
@TrailBoundco 5 лет назад
ourkaravan that’s a good point. How would you integrate a hose into this system? Instead of two quick release valves just put in three and then have a hose coiled up that you can connect to it and to the water valave? I don’t think I would want to run a random garden hose into the tank, might not be the best for drinking
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 5 лет назад
Hmm...if you mean making a pressurized city water connection using a third quick release, I don't think that would work. Water would fill the jugs then attempt to come out of the breathers on the water containers, spilling water. You'd need a one-way valve before the water containers. If you just mean for the purpose of filling the containers, I think the same issue would apply. If your goal is simply to be able to fill the containers in the van from a regular hose bib but you want to be able to use your own hose for sanitary reasons, you could always keep your own hose in the van with an on/off valve on the end so you can fill the tanks in the van and be able to turn off the water from the hose when filling.
@TrailBoundco
@TrailBoundco 5 лет назад
ourkaravan thanks Ken yeah I just want to use my own hose hooked up to an outdoor faucet (mainly at my house) to fill up the water jugs. Is there a clean way to do it with a quick connect that would also fill both jugs? Or are you thinking I would have to unscrew the top of each and fill it with the water hose going into it?
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 5 лет назад
I don't have the solution on the top of my head. No matter what water system you use you'll need a breather to allow the air to escape and be replaced by water. As such, you would need to come up with a breather solution that allowed the air and water to escape outside of the van once the tank filled. Do-able, for sure, but may not be worth the effort.

I went with a fixed 20 gallon tank for fresh potable water, but going with jugs like this for grey / sink water. The issue it would seem is how to know when to swap out full for empty jugs. These quick connect fittings should work for me. I'm going to order a set and give it a try. Excellent video, by the way.

@geraldbschmidt 5 лет назад
On impulse I bought 4 scepter blue potable water canisters at local tractor supply for $8 in clearance. They have a different cap with a spout piece. It turns out that the whole accepts the female quick connect and the seal on the outside. The lock ring on the inside does not fit. But if you clip the plastic lock features with a side cutter it works! You can hold it during tightening with a small blade screwdriver. The cap thread is shortened but seem to tighten up just fine.

I tried local vendors at first, but was sadly disappointed at the lack of returned phone calls and poor customer service. I very much thank you for the support! I'll try and keep the content coming; albeit slowly! -Ken

@@ourkaravan local vendors are a mixed bag here as well. i realize it's hard for them to stock every model of everything, but for sure you can see 80% of my build inventory on amazon, 15% on Ebay and the rest scrounged locally. you're doing an amazing job with the content, really well delivered and executed. you gave me the confidence to cut that big hole in my roof for the fan, and everything else from there has been way less scary! Keep em coming, but keep using the van with Kara as well, because that's the point!

Hi Ken, I love that we can go back in time and research how-to's so we don't screw up our own build! I just saw that you installed an undermount sink as a top-mount, which is exactly what we are doing; how did you fix it to the cabinet, since there are no clips for an undermount sink. We have some ideas but would love to hear what you did. Thank you.

GE Iron Grip 100% silicone adhesive is what I used. It’s clear in case you over apply, and it’s very strong stuff. -Ken

It would be nice to see the sink working after the install! I'm curious how much pressure the pump creates :)

I’m not sure what the standard gpm would be from a home faucet but the pump has no trouble keeping up with full flow of the faucet.

Do those water tanks have a one way valve on the screw lid that allows air to be sucked in whilst water is pumped out?
@ScottiStudios
@ScottiStudios 3 года назад
Great video. Really informative and easy to watch. One question, what happens if one of your tanks empties before the other? Will it draw air into the system?
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 3 года назад
Hi Scott, because the suction lines are all the same length, the tanks drain equally. I haven't had any issues whatsoever.

Hi, Ken, Great work ! can you specify the T size you used to connect the cold and hot water pipe of the faucet ? is it 3/8" OD male on both sides and 1/2" to water pump ? Please advise, Thanks

@whatyoumakeofit6635 5 лет назад
Absolutely love your water system set-up. Thank you for sharing. Since you have the suction line split in to 2 separate tanks, what happens when one is empty ? Or one is close to empty and starts sucking air ? Have you run into this yet ? I just wonder if it pulls water evenly from both tanks or if the line may pull more from one tank than the other. Another bonus that is granted due to your design. Its real easy to carry additional water if necessary. No need to adapt lines on additional tanks. Just swap the lid when changeing the tanl under the sink. How does the tanks get replenished with air as the water is drawn out ?
@ourkaravan

Thanks Bryan...I answered this question before but my replies were all deleted when I changed the name of the channel. The tanks are both draining at the same rate. Because the suction lines and lines to the pump are the same length, it draws evenly from both. That said, let's say one tank did for some odd reason empty itself. (This has not happened.) If you were to unplug the quick disconnect on that line, the automatic check valve in the quick disconnect would seal up and all future pumping would occur from the other tank. Same thing would happen if you decided only to carry one tank on a trip. It will work regardless of how many tanks are connected or not connected thanks to the automatic valve in the quick connects. :) Regarding air replacement, there is a small vent cap on each tank. I leave them very lightly cracked open. No leaks at all!

Thank you for the detailed video and parts list! Adding water is one of the last things I need to do to my van and I feel like I can after watching you! Curious its been a year, are you still happy with your water set up?
@ourkaravan

Not a single problem, love it! Many of my friends are running this system as well and they are equally happy. Be sure to lightly open the breather cap so air can enter the container as the water is pumped out. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

No, there are two small ports on top that let air in as the water comes out. I was concerned about getting drips out of those ports but have not seen a single drop.

Great video, have a quick question. Do the water takes bring water up at equal points? Another words one doesn't drain before another does it
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 3 года назад
The tubes that go into both bottles from the pump are the same length, and therefore they drain evenly.
