In today's video I show how I built a simple trailer gate for my utility trailer so that I can haul scrap metal to the scrap yard. The tailgate is made out of white oak, and is all fastened together with titebond 3 (optional) and carriage bolts. the whole project is made of white oak 1x6 and 1x2s. And the gate sits in pre existing square holes in the back corner of my trailer.

Hey! Can you help me with a bit of an urgent question I have about wood burning? I have a very cheap pyrography kit and it doesn't burn very hot, like at all. I wanted to burn a few designs onto some rings cut off from a fallen tree in my yard, but it took so long to burn, so I tried a board of pine I had laying around, and it did burn better, but is still taking much longer than I'd hoped. I really wanted to make something for my dad before Christmas in a couple of days, and it would ideally require a lot of filling in black ( making a portrait of deadpool lol) so I was hoping I could find a better type of wood to use, maybe birch? Do you think birch would help me burn quicker than pine, and is there literally anything I could do to help it burn quicker? I have the weller electric 15-piece kit which I believe you've used in one of your videos, standard beginners woodburning kit. I know there's no settings on it, so I doubt there's really much I can do, besides getting some better wood? I'm going out into the forest today to chop me a new piece to try out, any suggestions are muchly appreciated! Merry almost Christmas from Maine! :-)

End grain (which im assuming the discs are) does not burn as easily or nicely. pine should burn pretty good with that burner. as long as the wood is prepped. sanded up to 120 or 220 grit. it sounds like you may also be using green wood as you mentioned going out and chopping it. I dont have experience burning green wood but I can make a guess that it does not burn as nicely as something dry. maybe try a piece of planed pine from the hardware store. or a piece of basswood from a craft store. there is also the possibility the wood burner is defective. but Id try those other things first. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!

@@DylansDIYWorkshop Thank you for the quick response! You're definitely right about using fresh wood hah, I honestly didn't even think about it, even though it's obvious when thinking about it now. I'll try to see if I can rummage another plank of pine since my supply options are very limited beyond trees in the woods at the moment. It is definitely possible that my pen is defective, I have hardly used it and it randomly shut off a couple of times, I was working in the basement and it seemed to shut off when the furnace kicked on for some reason so that was weird. Seems to be working fine right now luckily! You don't think birch would work any better? I read that it burns pretty quickly, but I also read the same about pine. The rings I had sawed the other day are all dried out now, but I honestly have no idea what kind of tree they're from. Just some random tree that got wiped out by a big storm. I'll definitely look for a better option before committing to such a big picture this time lol. Hopefully I can get something to burn a little quicker because it's going to need quite a bit of filling in. I was able to get the one for my mom most of the way done though, I used the plank of pine and did a couple of running horses that turned out well! Just took me an insanely long time, so I'm worried about one that requires more shading. Worst case scenario, my hands are going to get extra cramped lol Thank you for your help!

wood usually takes something like 1 year per inch to "dry" unless its kiln dried. Ive honestly never burned birch so I cant say anything about it. best of luck to you on your burnings!
