Hey everyone! Ross here, back for another Daily Shave! Today’s shave is a hardware review where we chat about the latest brush offering from Simpson in the form of the Trafalgar T3 Synthetic.
I’ve been fortunate to try many synthetic knot options on the market over the years and admittedly, based on previous experience with Simpsons Chubby 2 Synthetic, which I did not enjoy, I was skeptical about this new synthetic knot option. That said, the price of this brush, especially from a traditionally premium priced brand like Simpson, was more than enticing to take a risk on to give it a shot and see how it performs.
The Trafalgar T3 sports a 26mm Sovereign Synthetic (Simpsons name for it) with an overall height of just a hair over 100mm. The handle is a classy ivory color with a very comfortable handle to grip. The hair fibers are incredibly soft both dry and wet and the knot itself is a mid-high density with very good backbone. What I’m pleased to see most about this brush is that it splays. Simpson is known for setting their knots quite low and very densely to a point where their brushes are typically known as “paint” brushes. This knot splays which allows you to swirl to build a lather, whether it is in a bowl or on your face. This is a deviation to their norm and I applaud Simpson for getting away from their traditional knotting methods to bring something different, and very affordable, to the community in the form of the Trafalgar. In addition to the T3, there is also the T1 (23mm) and T2 (24mm) options which are slightly cheaper options for those that prefer a smaller knot size.
Overall, I’m very impressed with this offering from Simpson and it is currently competing with the much more premium priced Omega EVO Synthetic brush as my top synthetic brush in the den. Price, in this case, may just push the T3 ahead though as it is almost a third of the cost of the Omega. If you enjoy synthetic brushes or are looking for something more budget friendly, give the Trafalgar line a look.

@@mark19441944 Don't worry, I'm thinking of buying this brush and have been asking if the lettering fades over time, but the answers have been negative 🙂 . I just asked out of curiosity, since there are brushes where that happens

Great shave and review! One thing with MWF is that I've experienced two different batches of MWF; one lathered into bubble bath and other into an amazing lather. It could be that there are variations of MWF pucks.

I experienced the same problem. The first puck I used was terrific. The second puck was impossible to use. No matter what method I used would prevent a lather that would disappear almost immediately on my face. I would have chucked it out and said forget it. But because my daughter had given me a puck of MWF as a gift I unwrapped and used it. Once again I found a soap that was terrific. There’s no such thing as “ practice “ or “ dialing in. “ You either have a good puck or a bad one.

Just got a T2 recently. Although it's a tad small for me, it's one of the highest quality synthetics I've ever owned. Zero glue bump, nice ergo weighty handle, efficient lather maker. Will be giving the T3 a try soon, that one may be just right for me. It's hard to go wrong with a Simpson!

Hey man question how do I choose the right size? I don’t know wether to get a t2 or t3. My face is medium/long length, but my facial hair is thin

Ross💈💈 Mitchell's Wool Fat is great soap as long as you don't make the mistake of "blooming" it. Blooming will leach out the lanolin causing the soap to dry cake, leaving the water on top of the puck and in the container slimy with lanolin and no way to re-incorporate it. Just an observance and learning from making the mistake. Some may disagree, but I've had to toss more than one puck because without lanolin, MWF is no good..IMO. Nice shave and video review of the brush. Enjoy!

Good review. Question, which will be softer and less ‘scratchy’, Simpson synthetic trafalgar T2 or their chubby 2 synthetic? Grateful for anyone’s views please. Respect for using a straight razor 👍

Hi, Ross. Thank you for this video. I'm new to wet DE shaving and I recently bought a Simpson T3. I've been having a bad experience with mine and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I've received a defective brush. The brush builds a lather very well but when I try to apply lather to my face, it doesn't lay on thick and evenly like yours does. It does the opposite. With each stroke I make, the brush wipes lather off my face. The more strokes I make, the less lather ends up on my face. It's very frustrating. I've tried different shave soaps (Proraso, ToOBS, Mitchell's) and different stroke methods (figure eight, holding the handle, holding the knot etc.) but nothing has helped. I thought maybe the brush needed to be broken in and would work better with time but it's been six weeks and no change. Have you ever experienced this with a shave brush? Do you have any recommendations?
