#simson #simsonlove #classiccar After the political reunification of 1989/1990, the state-owned enterprise Fahrzeug- und Jagdwaffenwerk “Ernst Thälmann” Simson Suhl was placed under the trusteeship and split into Simson Fahrzeug GmbH and Jagd- und Sportwaffen GmbH. These were later privatized. The export market collapsed, domestic demand fell sharply, and most of the 4,000 employees were laid off. Production reduced to 5,000 small motorcycles in 1991. In March 1991, the trusteeship initiated liquidation, and production ended on December 31, 1991.
However, the Simson story was to continue. At the end of 1991, some former employees founded “Suhler Fahrzeugwerk GmbH” and resumed production at the beginning of 1992, where this machine was also created. They had to establish new supplier contacts. They initially produced well-known models with slight modifications but dispensed with the 60 km/h version. From 1993, the new models were designated with Greek letters and modernized, but this led to higher costs, causing the model policy to survive only a few years.
Simson brought some innovations to the market, including the SD 50 cargo tricycle and the gamma E small scooter with an electric motor in 1992, but its high price prevented sales. Additionally, from 1993 to 1996, the Hotzenblitz was produced in the halls of Suhler Fahrzeugwerk GmbH, but that's another story.
