I absolutely agree with your defense of Ariel!! She was always fascinated with the human world, Prince Eric was more or less extra motivation. While I understand Triton in wanting to protect her from the unknown aspects of the human world, he absolutely didn’t have to destroy all the things she holds near and dear to her heart. Yes, Ariel did act a bit irrationally but what 16 year old wouldn’t in her situation! She is definitely the Disney Princess I most identify with and the Little Mermaid is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies, tied with Aladdin!!

11:00 The “Ariel Slander” reminds me of the “Cinderella Slander” I see, where some claim Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, just to marry the Prince. In the film, she wants to go because the Royal Invitation says “every eligible maiden is to attend.” Cinderella wants to go, because by royal decree, she was invited! It’s her step family who had their sights on the Prince…she just wanted to have a nice night outside the nightmarish hellscape that was being their servant.

P.S. Eric threw his flute into the water because it was him literally throwing away his idea of the dream girl and he had decided to be with Ariel, he had fallen in love with her.

Actually when I was 8 years old, I watch hocus pocus, and when Max that have 16 said to her sister of 8 years old, that He can't play in halloween anymore. I react like, OMG he is 16, he is really old. Now, am I talking about The Little Mermaid or Aladdin? Plot point by plot point, they are the same movie. I love them both. Why isn’t Aladdin called out for doing the exact same thing?

I actually had an idea for a fanfic that focuses on King Triton while Ariel is gone. After three days of searching, there is still no sign of Ariel, with Triton's subjects completely exhausted, and nowhere left to look. Frustrated, Triton goes to search for Ariel himself, and his search eventually leads him to the surface, as Ariel would often go there against his wishes. While there, Triton sees a happy human family playing on the beach, and seeing their love for one another triggers a memory of Triton's own family from when his wife was still alive. There may even be a moment where a member of the human family helps a fish that had washed up on the beach back into the water, much to Triton's shock. In this moment, Triton sees in this human family, his OWN family, and finally realizes that humans are not unfeeling barbarians, but actual PEOPLE. Realizing at last how terrible he'd been, Triton is utterly ashamed of his previous actions, and gives up his search for Ariel, believing that he doesn't deserve to get her back, and that she'd be better off without him. But then, Sebastian arrives to tell him about Ursula, spurning him back to action.

Calling out Ariel is like calling out Romeo and Juliet for their stupid decision making. OF COURSE they were stupid, they're teenagers. How people forget that when they too were that age EVERYTHING was the end of the world. That's the point of those stories. When our lives were fueled by heightened, unreasonably bonkers passions. Also Ursula, cruel AF but fair. The little mermaid is very well written.

I prefer 2D animation as well. Ariel was my FAVORITE growing up (she's probably number three or four on the list now, but that's still really impressive considering there are like 30 princesses in the franchise now XD). Oh, and I still have a crush on Prince Eric. He stole my heart at four years old the second he jumped off the lifeboat to rescue Max.

Little Mermaid has always been my favorite too!!! :D As far as which was my favorite Disney prince, it was usually a tossup between Eric and Prince Phillip, but my brother's name also happens to be Eric, so that always made me side more with Phillip, lol. Adult age around the 19th century(Which is the era that this story was set) was 16, so yeah I can see where that come from. Ariel was figuratively mute because her father wouldn't let her speak her mind, and then she goes literally mute when Ursula takes away her voice. But because she fought for what she believe is true, she got her voice back literally. Also, she's really young when her mom was taken by humans, only her father saw what happened, so she didn't remember much about her mother. Triton didn't really explain why he thinks humans are dangerous either. He basically just set the rules that they can't go up to the surface and can't have contact with humans without ever explaining to the ONLY daughter that doesn't remember what happened to her mother and who needs her father to explain. Not the best way to go for a father, but he's trying. I notice how every time Ariel talks to her father about the "issue" that Ariel loves the human world before Ariel actually go up there, he's always shutting her out and didn't want to have a proper discussion of what could be done instead. And he pushed her away even when he has all the power at his disposal to fulfill Ariel's dreams in seconds and avoid all the arguments that just end up with her not being able to trust her father anymore. From the argument, I can see Ariel really wanted her father to understand how she see things, but her father tells her that she will obey his rules without explaining the reasons behind the rules and he never wanted to hear her disobeying the rules again. I think that is something we can relate, when you hit the age that says you're an adult and wanted to try some new things like travel to somewhere you never been to before, and your overprotective parent is like "That place is dangerous! Don't go there!" when their information is also limited, of course you wouldn't believe your parents. In Ariel's defense, when she sees Eric, it's more like she wanted to do all the things that she sang before with Eric by her side. It's like you want to travel somewhere and you met a friend or have someone you really like that knows a lot more than you do about the place you're going to visit, and you want to go there with the friend or the romantic interest. I don't know why the "modern" people think that Ariel shouldn't leave all the things behind for Eric, but Eric become part of her dream, she wanted to be human before she sees Eric, doing all the things she wanted to do as a human would be great, but she's more including Eric in the dream she already had, not completely changing her dream. Plus, she's the person that decides even though her society is telling her that she can't want those things, like being a human and actually marry a human, she still went after it because of what she believe is right, questioning the beliefs instead of just simply obeying the rules without any question at all. I think that's why I relate to her, like you can't tell me to obey the rules without proper reasons behind the rules lol.
