AIP made extend submerged duration but need high cost maintenance with its risk thats why recently a lot of countries leaved AIP and switch in to Li ion battery
You sounded like knowledgeable but you got it ALL wrong. Aip provide Air for the Diesel engines to work even the Submarine is submerged. In the past without Aip , they use snorkels or resurfaced to start the diesel engines to recharge the Lead Acid Batteries. Nowadays Msnufactures have use LiON batteries to replace the Lead Acid Batteries. Therefore Aip and LiOn are two different thing and are much needed for diesel electric submarine 😅

@jagodiving No....AiP is to provide oxygen for the Diesel Electric to work and therefore allow the Submarine to stay submerge for a long time and still can charge the LiON batteries. The LiON need to be recharged also. Without AiP the Submarines need to be resurface ir by using snorkel to provide oxygen to the Diesel electric engines to work in order to recharged the LiON batteries. If the Submarine resurfaced or using snorkel it will exposed themselves from the enemy. AiP is to provide Oxygen for the Diesel engine to generate electricity and LiON are batteries to store electricity generated by the Diesel engines. Both are needed to stay submerged in the sea. Advantages of LiON compared to Sealed Acid Batteries are larger AH and more energy csn be stored with the sane footprint compared to SLA batteries.

Just sad that that Singapore by political pressure from germany missed the opportunity to accuire the Swedish SAAB A19 and A26 types. With A19 comparable to the 218, and then A26 being part of a completely newxt generations of submarines
Any source? Refering to Wikipedia, it looks like the Swedish government extremely interfered with the German shipyard's subsidiary over a commercial issue (pricing), and as for Singapore wouldn't have had anything to offer - the first A26 being delayed and still not operational for years to come.
