Thank you Mark Weins for featuring this store! This is a special special store that I have to let you know their story and background. Their founder actually started the farm way back before the stall as he wanted to provide healthy pesticide free food to everyone. Through this stall, they take fresh ingredients grown on their farms and cook creative vegetarian dishes at an affordable price for the masses. The food is extremely delicious, healthy and fresh and even as a meat eater, I cannot state enough how good their food is. This store is a gem and rarity in Singapore and it's such a pity that they were forced to closed by the Government just because the government wants to take back the land to have high productive farming instead of their organic farming which produces food at a lower scale. There is zero farm to table concept in Singapore that is at an affordable price besides them and now there is truly zero. This is so so sad and such a sad look on the government. In the pursuit of productivity, we are killing all the unique flavors that shape our food culture. We should truly learn to slow down and appreciate even the niche areas of our society to be truly multi-cultural. Glad that you enjoyed their food and it is really delicious and flavorful! And one of the rare healthy hawker foods.
This is a false story. I farmed for them in the late 80’s and the owner, his name is Leehansonf sold this shop due to high cost of operation and low profit margin. Stop spreading lies stupid
Same for the family-run quail (egg) farm in 2018 where they are forced to close because they don't find them productive enough, when they literally shoot their own foot earlier by reducing local quail egg supply because they want to import some from Malaysia as a way to 'diversify' food sources
I'm loving this 'mini-series' on plant based or healthier options! I'm moving to Singapore soon and although I'm excited for ALL the dishes, I'm hoping to find a few more spots just like Thunder Tree to help me stay fighting fit.
Thunder tea rice is actually rather common in Singapore. There are also many vegetarian Chinese (I recommend this place called R&J’s cozy corner) and Indian restaurants - the menu is quite wide, you’ll have to visit them yourself!
@@halonick i love the rice mixture very much but hated the green soup. Tried it 3 different times but my goosebumps comes up each time. Soup taste too strong for ke.
Thanks Mark and Ying. I appreciate your effort. I enjoyed this video. You work so hard and you have to be away from family to do it. It must be hard. I appreciate what you do and what you sacrifice to keep doing what you do. You have a strength and determination that is impressive.
Hi Mark, You are suppose to pour the green soup into the rice to enhance the favors. It will taste totally different. Try it again. There is another famous stall at boonlay market.
Actually the green soup is suppose to pour into the veggie + rice ...and mix it up which = AWESOME!! BOOOOM!! Haven't come here for quite a long time already....
i heard about this thunder tea rice since it was featured and rated 3 stars in one of the Food King videos a few years back. it's a pity to hear that the outlet closed down for good. actually, it's hard to find a local vegetable farm in singapore due to limited land. the government has put so much effort into having local farms by encouraging the residents to do community gardening, particularly in the hdb flats. nowadays, quite a number of young generations begin to set up hydroponic farms on top of the roof to source the locally-grown vegetables. you can even pay a visit to a community garden at the new Kampung Admiralty neighbourhood.
I'm so glad you got to try the sambal! It's officially a Big on Spice episode 😄Sorry to hear about the restaurant going out of business though. I hope they are able to find a new source for organic produce and reopen soon.
Thankfully I managed to give them a try back in May before they close down for good! It's been a dish I've been wanting to try and I'm happy that I finally tried this dish.
Hi Mark Wiens, it was so nice and a great blessing to have met you and your lovely wife Ying. Glad you like the Thunder Tree rice and you manage to try their special homemade chilies (sambal). Hehehe you almost missed trying their sambal . Love all your videos. Hope to see you again in Singapore.
Oh dear Mark, as you’ve realised by now, you need to mix the tea (the green soup) into the rice. It’s up to you how much to add but you don’t drink it separately like a soup. 😝 And next time, if you forget the sambal, just go to the head of the queue and tell the aunty you want sambal. No need to queue again. People will understand and won’t mind that you do that!
My mother-in-law would prepare authentic Hakka Thunder Tea Rice with the tea thick with tea powder. Some stalls would give you a small bowl or diluted soup which isn't the real deal. You have to pour the tea into the mix to get that experience in flavours and immediately eat it, not soak until a soggy mess.
Sombol sombol sombol 🤣🤣 you can tell mark was irritated that he forgot the sombol . Then he couldn't help himself , he had to go get some 🤣 got a pinch and seemed like he enjoyed that sombol way more than the actual food 😂 I'm dead
To everyone who sees this comment, keep pushing in life and never give up. Can't wait to see you successful one day and May God bless you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The best thunder tea rice is in Kulai M’sia just 30mins drive north of Johore Bharu Beside the thunder tea rice there’s also very tasty Yong Tau Fu & vegetable bun which taste extremely good
Can't believe it. I'm plant based. I'm a Mark Weins fan. Now I discover Marks making vids about plant based foods. I know what I'm watching for the next few days - I've some catching up to do.
This Hakka dish originated from Hepo county of Meizhou city in eastern Guangzhou province...the original green coloured soup is not geen tea but rather a special tree leaf from Meizhou area pounded into powder form and made into a soup. Being migrants from the north and meat being scarce, Hakkas were resourceful to create this vegetable dish. Now it has carried forward worldwide where Hepo Hakkas are...
Ah need to mix the green soup with rice. But as long as u hop to countries with Hakka communities or even Taiwan u will get to eat this. Do correct me if I wrong for the other commenters! From s’pore and hungry while watching this at 11.30pm sheesh. Hope u enjoyed sg mark!
Hey dude, you gotta mix the green soup with the rice... The green soup is part of the whole dish, you have to pour the soup into the rice and give it a good mix, and the whole bowl of rice will be sweet.
Sad it has been closed, did have it twice and it was nice. Due to the impending closure of its organic vegetable farm at Lim Chu Kang, Thunder Tree will be fully ceasing operations soon.
The soup has basil, coriander, and mugwort? What kind of mugwort? I looked up a recipe and it said it was made with 4 herbs, it gave specific details of the types of basil and coriander to use (it said they use sawtooth coriander, a different species than what you find in the USA) and it said the other two herbs were Acanthopanax trifoliatus (I have no idea what that is but apparently it's a Chinese herb used medicinally and added to this soup) and "mugwort" which the recipe site said you couldn't buy at a supermarket. There's a few plants called "mugwort" used in Asian cooking, anyone know which specific mugwort they're talking about?
I found a video of a lady cooking it. She says the Mugwort is the one used in Japan and says it is Artemisia Vulgaris but I am looking at her video wondering if it is Yomogi which is Artemisia Princeps. I think you could use them both. But she also says a name for Mugwort in Chinese. The Chinese species of Mugwort called that is Artemisia Argyi. So, anyone from there, what kind of Mugwort is it? Now you know the ingredients in the soup, kind of. You could use any one of those 3 plants.
Wowwie awesome stunning thunder rice Singapore A list on plate commonly eaten every food Singapore yummy and delicious thank you Mark invite say hello Ying and Micah from California 🤩💗💕🌷💕🌈💚✅👍🏻
Show us the food court at Vivo City! There was a stall we saw but didn't get to eat where all the veggies were like the size of my head and they were all self service and it took up the entire counter almost reaching the ceiling...
