Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says tensions over Taiwan risk leading to a miscalculation between the U.S. and China as both nations step up activity around the island. "I don't think it's going to war overnight, but it is in a situation where you can have a mishap or a miscalculation and be in a very delicate situation," Lee said Wednesday night in an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum event in Singapore.

Whether America can maintain its dominance depends on its ability to self-correct: Here in America, I don't see any politicians doing any soul searching on what's gone wrong with America? Instead of blaming China for all its problems. American Exceptionalism is dead hard. But no empire lasts forever that is how the world works.
@yeejlilys9742
@yeejlilys9742 2 года назад
Totally agree with you. Unfortunately self-correction is lost in today's America and what is prevailed in America is no one agreeing with facts as simple as 1+1=2. A divided America with mentality of blaming everyone else (particularly China) for its problems will harm America domestically and internationally. In the past, American did no have credible competitors, so this self-destruction did not do much harm to America. But today China has resources, sizes, and capability to compete with America, the outcome could be totally different.

As a people, the US has developed the dependency on others for their living standards well above the rest of the world. American Exceptionalism ended when the US decided to de-couple gold and US Dollars. Since then, the US can print as much US Dollars as it pleases. And as a result, all Americans, not just the suckers in Wall Streets, learned the sweet deal of printing money and taking real wealth from other nations. As a people, the US has developed the dependency on others for their living standards well above the rest of the world. The outsourcing of the manufacturing jobs is just a symptom, not a root cause, of the end of American Exceptionalism.

Just like his late father, PM Lee is a very smart leader. He bows to neither the U.S nor China knowing that both countries' trades are heavily dependent on Singapore's ports. Instead, he exploits the U.S - China trade war for the benefits of his country. I wish other ASEAN countries can have a capable leader like him.

As as this issue, what SG trying to prove here? Being neutral? Really? With China? Then why strengthen the law and protection on intellectual property? Who are they protecting from? China's propaganda stirring its society, didn't SG saw that? Are SG is trying to become another state of China? Didn't saw the aggression of China? Recruiting his citizen to perform his spy ops in foreign soil. Retaining SG's asset just because we don't follows China's tyrant ideology and believes. And now even Taiwan? So if Malaysia taken back SG, with his "history" play like China. I guess the world should also sit back. The millions of life's involve is non of other business.

No magic there. This is why LKY was the first to invest heavily in his own community in China and why Li Jia Xing of HK followed suite. Except that US is ultimately NOT reliant upon foreign trade, not as a matter of Exports trade-to-GDP percentage, which is only 11% for the US. The US buys a lot of junk that it is entirely capable of manufacturing for itself, but hasn't out of convenience. Much of the manufacturing capability in Asia (not just China) came from the US in the first place. On the other hand, a lot of manufacturing is re-shoring to the US or North America in general. Decoupling from China has already begun, and is likely to continue which is bad for China as the US is China's largest foreign consumer market. Lee is of course going to bias his views as to how things effect his own country, not necessarily what is in the best interests of other nations.

Before the pandemic, some of these problems were manageable. But we utterly mismanaged the pandemic that led to more than 740k deaths. Our governance structure and ideology are called into question. I notice that the difference between Singapore leaders and many leaders of other democratic countries is that Singaporean leaders don't always make the populist decision. In fact, they seldom make the populist decision. They know that they will probably be elected again and also the majority of the citizens know that there is no viable alternative party at the moment that can match their track record of running the country for half a century. In contrast, political leaders in other countries get elected based on spewing popular rhetoric and making the decision that is short term popular rather than long term beneficial. Almost every decision Singapore government makes is towards long term benefit for a very small island nation. And to do this their leaders have to be very perceptive to what is going on outside their borders and geopolitical economic developments in other countries as well and also anticipate how possible permutations of such developments will affect the future of their own country. That is why PM Lee can comment so well on China, US, Taiwan etc.

@@freemanol My comment was about continuity of ideas from govt to govt. Every 3 or 4 years America and Australia change policy and thus cant actually achieve anything long term without it being changed and "reviewed/reassessed"

@@dilligafwoftam985 yeah exactly. In the west people are proud of the fact that their government kept changing in polar directions, as if it's an example of the greatness of democracy. More like chaos. I think people are blinded by the ideology, so much that they completely miss the chaos happening in front of their eyes

Rich people are democratic, poor people are not. If you want your country to be rich go democratic. I think the largest advantage of democracy, is how equitably the merchant class can have some control of the government. Over history when the merchant class is unoppressed, the people and country are richer. Don’t be tricked by the strongmen. Democracy creates short term instability, authoritarianism creates huge instability whenever power is passed on, or when the ruling ideology fucks up.
