Hi, Sarah.. You responded "So cool" to the mention of the lady pirate, but I was like "So cool" having parents who were Anthropologists, having a fascinating meal discussing Pulau Seking!! 😁 I think I might have attended your Mum's public lecture on Pulau Seking some years back, organised by National Museum.. maybe it could under the Heritage Fest.. Who else does that I wonder, living in Seking and studying them.. I learnt a lot during the lecture. Thank you Dr Wee 😊

The sea peoples of Asia were all over the coast, from Fujian to Guangdong, even as far up north in Shanghai. Hong Kong & Singapore were famous for them before the colonial governments pushed them to abandon their way of living, because seafaring nomads are just hard to control. Those who chose to retain their traditional lifestyles & culture went further south. Would LOVE to taste their cuisine. What a wonderful way for them to retain their culinary culture by offering catering services in this modern age. How are the flavour profiles different from standard Malay or Singaporean Malay food? Thank you for this video. More with your anthropologist parents please! I'm sure they have fascinating stories to share.

Orang Laut is the original residents of Singapore right? Their food doesn't look very different from Malay food but you said they have distinct taste. Would be nice to have opportunity to taste them. Nice food and video. I wish we can have a gigantic food court next to national museum that feature such food. After all our Hawker centre has became a world heritage. Why not ！

Now I realise why the island is called Pulau Belakang Mati... the side of island facing Pulau Singapura is the back ( belakang) where the sea is calm or 'dead' (mati) to be a harbour.

I'm just enjoying to see the whole family willing to eat with their hands. It's the best way!

Lovely video! And well-done on eating with your fingers! In the 70s we do get the orang laut coming to mainland and selling siput aka choot-choot door-to-door at HDB flats. Looking at the dishes, it's quite typical Malay dishes. And the style of cooking long beans and pineapple in assam - tamarind broth is really yummy and cooling for the body on a hot day - you can add fish too!

its a rare too see european having high appreciation towards malay food like your father did in those kelantan area, very adventerous taste bud, and the photo he took during his days in singapore islamds was incredible, can see how beautiful your mom in there! btw, belakang mati literally translate to “dead end” lol. enjoy your vids, keep up the good work

Wow i never knew your parents were anthropologists! I've always had an interest in this field as a Singaporean but there isn't really anywhere in our local institutions where you could study anthropology "at a higher level".

I was watching a CNA documentary also about Orang Laut. One of the interviewees was mentioning their story as Orang Laut descendent, who believe they are actually protectors of the straits and not scary pirates like what some history will described them as. I guess there is not right or not, just depend which side of the history you are on. And history will usually be favourable to the victors

Err....this is basically Malay food. My mom has cooked every single dish that was presented here before. I don't know why people are trying to differentiate this food to other Malay food. Malay cuisine is really a lot more varied than what is sold outside. It's just that you can only find them in Malay homes.

Were your parents like the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan from the American TV show BONES? On a previous video, HAKKA MEE, u mentioned your mother was a concert pianist.

So disgusting eating w hands. Unsanitary. Stinks and gets red stained after finished eating. Takes several hand washing to remove stench. My friend likes to lick his fingers after eating. Then he wonders why he suffers from diarrhea at night.
