@questfor truths Yup I guess it exists within the realm of possibilities that she lied about getting kicked on her chest by a stranger. And a bystander saw the act...
Well spoken Mr. Shanmugam. It’s about time Singaporeans realised this racism crept here since the 1970s. When the speak Mandarin campaign went full swing till many years. When minorities were ignored in job vacancies and racial groups started forming in schools and our Singapore society. It was never like this before the 1970s when we al felt like authentic multi racial group of Singaporeans, speaking in common languages of English and our National Language Malay. Which cut across all barriers of language.Till the majority became to feel special and elitists in our society, speaking in their own elitist language in the company of the minorities. Even though all Singaporeans from kindergarten till University are taught all subjects in spoken and written English. Could there still be flaws in our education system such as SAP schools and the upbringing of the elitist children? www.ricemedia.co/current-affairs-opinion-sap-schools-chinese-elitism-singapore/
Thank you for addressing this sad issue Mr Shanmugam. As a 61 year old Singaporean born Indian, it grieves me to watch and experience the subtle and not so subtle anti-Indian and even anti-Filipino sentiments rising in Singapore. I hope your frank, polite but firm advice will muzzle these inhumane elements. CNA needs to do more reporting on this ugly aspect in our society and educate these people.
One or two incidents of such nature doesn't create an air of Indian racism in Singapore. Nevertheless, Singaporeans, like myself has been rather 'pissed' by the continue importation of Indians from India to Singapore carrying with them the variants of the deadly virus. That I cannot stomach and who is to blame for such proliferation of the virus clusters of the variants. So, please don't create a storm in the tea cup.
@@michaellee3314 It does, maybe you don't see more of it because it hardly gets reported. The people either just let it slide or adjust things around with their lifestyle. @@michaellee3314 I've also been wanting them to stop the importation of Indians ever since April. But that doesn't mean the people that did make it through deserve such treatment. Again, hate on the policy, not on the people.

Ok let's debate CECA, those who thinks SG and Singaporeans benefit from CECA, substantiate your argument. When the entire Changi Business Park workforce comprises of primarily foreign Indian nationals something's wrong, then when you consider the discriminatory hiring practices when foreign Indian HR hires people of their own nationality even though their degrees and qualifications may be fake, then you could see how an entire business park became a foreign enclave. Overtime CECA will create more animosity towards foreigners, nobody's saying don't import foreigners but rather there's no need for CECA especially in a small SG jobs market.
you can see talents from India , Philippines, Europe and people around the world. the company needs talents to run their business .. they need guys to work late shift , may be on weekends , meetings on US/UK hours , sometimes working outside office hours.. That is how IT works ; you cannot expect a job from 8 am -5pm .. I know several locals told in interview that they cant work after office hours/ weekends .. Unfortunately companies don't want these kinds of "talents" .. so they go for Foreign talents.. Don't forget that there is a world outside Singapore .. All the companies working in Singapore have a huge setup in other nations like Philippines and India.. if you start creating unnecessary noise , they will shift their operations to low cost places and they will run smoothly and you will continue to talk CECA …CEAC.. . do you have any instance to show any FT working in SG government Jobs. Did any FT snatched your Govt Jobs ??? But these companies need FT.. Train the youth so that they will be ready to work in any circumstances .. Literally last week, I was walking on a sidewalk by a bus station. I passed a large group waiting for the bus where one Chinese man was speaking loudly on the phone without his mask. I approached him, pulled an extra mask out of my pocket I had, and said gently in Chinese "你忘记了你的MASK吗?你可以借我的。“ Translation: Have you forgotten your mask? You can borrow mine." The man proceeded to yell at me in Hokkien and shoo me away. I walked away quickly and looked behind me as he discreetly pulled out his mask. I was trying to be nice, and I didn't accuse him of anything. But it didn't matter, because my face was Indian. Not all Singaporeans are like this, but many are. You can blame foreigners for your mean self-entitled behavior to your fellow citizens all you want. But it won't change the fact that this behavior is unacceptable. The lack of empathy people have sometimes in this country is staggering. It's not a government issue, it's a cultural issue. The veil is lifting. Are we as a society ready to address our problems, or will we continue to blame the gahmen?
I already predicted that when the gates to Indian flights didn’t close, our people will be pointing fingers to the Indian community. Many people think the same way and you can control the speech or action through law but you cannot control the thoughts because the government allow such thoughts to manifest in the first place.
@questfor truths multiculturalism only work when there’s reasonable actions to stop people from targeting the Indian community by doing what is right rather than consider monetary gains. Last year we close our borders to China we didn’t fester hatred towards the chinese people because actions were swift. This time round I think the ministers just allow hatred to fester. If the 21 days measures worked, why did the airport staffs get the virus?
Same happens to me when i enter the lift and a chinese man shouted at me bcos i wore the mask below my nose just a bit as i am asthmatic.. i didnot fight back but i just looked at him and still he say he will police, i responded, BE MY GUEST YOU RACIST!! so there are still ppl who are racists amongst us.. its like a practice here.. anyway i faced so many of racism amongst the chinese but not indians.. i dont know why and whats their motive.. i hope govt will fo something abt this.. thank u 🙏
Firstly as a Singaporean I'm pissed whenever there is are job vacancies despite the Qualification and experience .70% they still require Mandrin speaking and why not Tamil or Malay speaking? You are telling me that people can't communicate in Universal language English. That is racism Guys. What happened in the video was the local Singaporean guy snapped at the Indian Nationality which I don't consider racism. This will only stop when our Singapore Government starts prioritizing our local Singaporeans. Not that I am against the FORIEGN workers or their race but these are facts.
It is unfortunate; however, China is Singapore’s largest trading partner. Now and in the future, mandarin skill is necessary or rather more likely to land a job. In fact, China is becoming the largest trading partner to more and more countries, and mandarin usage will be unavoidable. Welcome to the new order. Bad news for you, China is also India’s largest trading partner. EU’s largest trading partner is also China.

The man regardless of race, especially the Chinese (because we are the majority) should not have attacked the lady (whatever race she maybe). He should have confronted her and if she is truly exercising (doing brisk walking) and remind her to put it on after her exercise, or he can take a video or her for a period of time and report it to the relevant authorities, rather than to attack her (in this case as mentioned by Minister Shan "did a flying kick). In this sense, he is a fooking coward for attacking a woman and should be severely punished with a fine and jail for at least 4 weeks, and if he is within the age group should be caned to deter further altercation of this kind in Singapore.
I am glad that the Singapore government is swift in having these issues addressed at a national level. Just like Shan said, there are many trolls who are racists/xenophobes lurking within our community and even online that probably need education and insights. I will never forget this hospitality, so please know that in my opinion, 99.9% of Singaporeans still have this beautiful spirit endowed in them....
there could be a correlation between good behaviour of singaporeans and your nationality. I am an Indian and have been living in SG for almost two years now, most Singaporeans that I encounter are nice. However, there is a minority population (I am not sure of the population but it is definitely more than 99%) which disgust Indians as well. It is not a hidden fact that such people exists in SG. So my friend, if you have not faced such situation do not say that it does not exist at all.
Humans are generally good by nature. Whereas politics that man play to achieve his own selfish goals is dirty; it rubs off on the people by their words and their actions. Spore is no different; some people wear all whites to tell you they are whiter than white.
CECA is a policy that makes Singaporeans feel threatened and discriminated in the job market. This policy has allowed Singapore to selectively and specifically brought in a single group of immigrant workers. Singaporeans again feel threatened as this may disrupt the social composition that make up the Singapore fabric of society. The government should realise and understand that no matter how much monetary benefits it brings to the country but if it brings disharmony to the different communities it cannot be a good and viable policy. You can debate for days but if this policy is going to bring about division and disharmony amongst the different communities then the policy is a total failure.

Races in Singapore don't integrate. They just form clusters of their own. This will go on and on and the more Singapore gets of different races the more they form separate groups. Such development here and in other countries have led to riots. Racism can never be eradicated. It's best that we prevent it from developing and to do this we should try to be as homogeneous a society as possible.
This can happen anywhere… not just in singapore. It’s just natural human nature for people of similar culture to want to live/work together. That’s why we have CMIO category which the oppies want to so much wane away without thinking about what consequence it will result in. The CMIO category isn’t a means of segregation, but a conduit through which the government can use to try to get different races to live together. This way different people with different culture learn to live/study in the same schools. Sadly many of our oppie MPs are just concerned about playing to the gallery, raising populist political topics, without realising that their rhetoric has already started to cause faultlines.
That's why there needs to be intervention, like racial quota forcing a balance of people of different races in every neighborhood and community. Unpleasant as it may be or sounds, its definitely way better than what has happened in other countries where there are hoods or slums of different races where people lacks opportunities to interact with people of other race. That is what led to riots, discrimination and hate. While racism does exist in Singapore, it has been kept down to the minimum simply because of policies that are pragmatic not ideological. Harmony does not happen out of nothing, it has to be drilled into people mind, be it by education or forcing people to experience the culture of others.

It is kind of adding salt to injury. Tread carefully and be sensitive to the hurt feelings of Sporeans. If a local Indian Sporean can shout at an imported Indian over the virus, the gvt had better be careful about siding any party, or punishing anyone verbally or by law in any case whether in parliament or on the street as Xenophobia or racism. In any case, the gvt has to look after its own people first & foremost whc doesnt mean real crimes shd go unpunished. If the gvt takes sides unfairly giving in to outside forces , the people can see with their own eyes; it doesnt bode well as a nation and build trust with the people. It credibility ll erode further. The pandemic has destroyed many thgs , let it NOT DESTROY WHATEVER TRUST LEFT OF THE PEOPLE FOR THIS GVT.
@@littlelee9391 don't be so pessimistic. Just do what you can, don't be influenced by political talks that flames racism and xenophobic, and don't vote for them.
One anecdotal story of old men making uncomfortable comments to support Sham case is rather weak and irrelevant. Trying to push the blame. Investigations must be even handed and fair.
Indians in Spore , didn’t come to this land on their own, they came with British, as soldiers, doctors, lawyers and as other professionals. They were higher-educated, hardworking, faithful to their Gods, they were good people in the 1st place. And they are still are.
Hence it's proven that Indian and Chinese could never live together in harmony . Lol Who cares Atleast just wanna say Highly talented Indians should never migrate to such nation as it's not worth it .
Indians need not defend themselves against racial discrimination. Mouth can lie. Eye will not. The pandemic situation in India is a bleak reminder that Karma does not forget.
Singapores China boys came from all over the world and gave that fatal kiss to the whole world, and now China boys are kicking Indians, who are innocent recipients of this fatal China kung flu ..even racists have to be logical lah😀😀😀
So this is similar to what's happening in the USA with the Chinese/Asian/Japanese/Korean whatever people. I really felt for those people especially the 80 year old woman crying in the streets but now I don't. Not for any of them. What I learned - Rascism is everywhere, everyone is rascist but it only comes to light when the situation arises to handle one's own interests.
Lucky for Malaysian. Now still can survive. But soon Malaysian gov might copy as they and sg gov rub each other one. See the revenue from fines last year for both country, know liao. Lol
Govt should lead by example. Remember the remarks made that Singapore is not ready for non- Chinese PM some time ago? There you go " men in whites", you guys are not showing a good example. Hypocritical, right? You guys reaps what you sow... Common man see common man follow.
It just have to be 80% local born Singaporeans and 20% immigrants. Race is no longer a problem since LKY. Current government trying to recreate the racist issue to divert failure of the pandemic handling? Seen so many funerals recently. Few of them are just primary school kids.
@@oldlee2706 Foreign interference mostly from India and China. These two country should not exist. They are the present day bullies. Last time it was the US and Europe.
That's why i said, our Chinese PAP ministers or politicans have "No Power" in the parliament, due to their naiveness and ignorance......If i was their ancestors, parents or children, i will feel deeply ashamed by them!!!
The woman did NOT wear a mask.. so she not charged? So next time anyone not wearing mask can say they are "brisk walking" and then nothing happens? I not supporting violence, but please be fair.. What type of signal is sent to the other law abiding citizens? Please charge both and not only one.. by charging only one party is racism by itself..
Lets not promote hate against race or religion. Let our Muslim ladies don the hijab if they wish to do so. Why should they not be allowed to don it because of a group of people who do not wish to be served by somebody wearing a hijab? Practice what you preach.
Let's also include to defend all the Frontline Staff of TTSH. They experience an extreme racism treatment They work their hardest at the frontline to save many people. They deserve our utmost respect, not humiliation.
Truth be told. 99% of us average joe peasant Singaporeans normally do not bother confronting whether someone wear mask properly or not. Our kiasu kaisi Singaporean at best only muster enough courage to take a dirty look at the mask offender in the eye. So for someone to actually confront the mask offender, it must be rather uncommon, except maybe bus drivers telling passengers to wear mask and wear properly. The government needs to get the public to wear masks properly. In the event that someone do confront someone who do not wear mask as intended, then the safe protocol should be the mask offender make the necessary corrections. Keep the peace and all should be well. This is regardless of ethnicity. Physical violence must be discouraged. I find it strange that the lady victim chose to say "God bless you" instead of just adjusting her mask. To the angry man, that "God bless you" could sound like "Go bash you" and perhaps lead to misunderstanding. Violent acts must be punished but doing safe protocols when confronted can eliminate a lot of misunderstanding. Minister Sham has done a good job and seems guarded at his comments. Opportunist MP like the one that raise the issue should be cautioned not to fan further flames of conflict. Singapore prides itself on racial harmony and by its citizens following the rules of the country. It will take more than the average joe to confront someone not wearing masks properly. The safe protocol will be for the deemed mask offender to just make the effort to appear to correct the mask and not pretend to give lame excuses. This will avoid more uncalled acts of conflict. Doing otherwise means all of us can be sudden brisk walkers and start wearing masks below the nose.
Then why tighten the liquor control after the indian riot isn't this a form of racism from the gov. Personally I support the liquor control. Really don't like those people who misbehave after they drunk. Ps, my information might be wrong, not to spread fake news, so take it base on your own judgement.
Singapore has never shy away as a intolerant and unforgiving place where there are harsh penalties for drug offences, littering and loitering ,anti smoking and anti chewing gums.In fact Singapore has become a intolerant place because of Covid protocols. Singaporean have always voted for intolerable policies to enable a cohesive nation that is drug free, litter free ,crime free and Covid free. People suffers from racism and racist policies especially in a multiracial society with multi intolerable policies.
All those who call yourself Indian - let us first discuss your racist behavior with the Dalits and others for 3000 years and still continuing. After that cry "victim of racism" in other countries.
How you know the people who suffered racist attacks in Singapore aren’t part of the lower caste? You want to generalise a whole billion population? You stupid is it. You think person A racist, person B deserves to be punished.
