For "Back to Black" Angelina wrote the new lyrics in the 24 hours prior to the recording, then needed just two takes.

Great reaction Andrea. This performance was at the Hotel Cafe in LA. a small intimate club. Many young artists performed there before they made it big like Adele, John Mayer and Billie Eilish. Angelina performed two songs here with Toby Gad, Bad Valentine and If I Were a Boy. This was a few days before Angelina and Toby left for London to perform If I Were a Boy at an event at the London Palladium and at the IVORS awards and then later at a small London club. They also shot videos for If I Were a Boy while in London

I love this new original song, Angelina's live interpretation and lyrics are extraordinarily raw and aggressive and her so particular, hoarse and deep voice completely fascinates you while she performs those fantastic and beautiful tonal scales and does it in perfect relaxation, effortlessly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. With her I continue, even after many years of listening, to have goosebumps every time, in particular with every new wonderful vocal experiment that she creates. Angelina's musical eclecticism transcends the ordinary, she truly has a musical knowledge and analytical ability that is beyond my understanding. Angelina and Amy Winehouse were influenced by many of the same jazz greats and both have a natural rasp so there will similarities. But Angelina has dozens of influences beyond jazz to fill her vocal tool box. She can do pretty much anything she wants with her vocals. I hope she chooses to continue with this one. Mind blowing!

I agree there’s a lot of Amy in the phrasing and the tone. As with many of her songs, she starts the first line full-throated and strong-with some real attitude. What I heard that was different for me was the weight and power of her voice on many of these lyrics. She’s in control of the relationship, and she’s in control of the vocals. We keep hearing different voices from Angelina’s toolkit of 1,000, and I love this one.

There is some debate on the lyrics. The line that the captioning shows as “I thought I told you I would mess up YEAH”, some of us hear it as “I thought I told you I would mess up your heart”. I hear two syllables and it actually flows better, makes sense and the vowel sounds like an ar sound, not a yeah sound. She is known for dropping consonants as she does with “h” in the word hand in some Million Miles performances and the “t” in the word start in the next line of this song. I guess we’ll find out for sure when there are official lyrics posted when the song is released.
