Do you know the backstory? The man behind Dimash was his professor and mentor from university. Dimash really loved him much. He died not long ago because of Covid. Kenes Duisekeev was the composer of this song. He embraced Dimash, when he sang it in his teenager age and thanked him, that despite his young age he understood the message. Kenes composed the melody for his sister that died when she was 19 years old. The words "apple of my eye" Qaragym ay, are used mostly by fathers for his daughters. The lyrics are for a girl that is shortly before marriage and the father talks to her calling her apple of my eye. Kenes composed the melody how he taught his father that passed away too would make it for his daughter. As I said, Dimash sang this song before, but I've never seen him sing it this emotional.

So sad for Dimash. I think Dimash becomes so close to his mentors. Another side of Dimash that makes him so endearing to so many.

Dimash first sang this song for the 70th birthday ceremony for the Composer Kenes Duisekeev in 2016. This is what the Professor had to say about Dimash: "In 2016, my 70th anniversary was celebrated here in Astana. It was decided that it will be held in the Qazaqstan Concert Hall. At that time, Dimash Kudaibergen came to me and said, "Kenes aga, how would you feel about me singing Karagym-ai ?". In fact, I had already invited another singer to sing this song. Kenes Duysekeev wasn’t only a teacher/mentor of Dimash, he was a grandfatherly friend for him. Dimash is talking about him in his long interview. (You can find it on Dimash’s RU-vid channel it’s about 40 minutes long - btw the best interview I have seen) It must have been tough for Dimash to sing this song. Me and you we both felt his pain and grieving in his voice and performance. Although it’s so sad it’s so beautiful. Just a piano and Dimash with his pure voice without any vocal acrobatics. I‘ve been thinking about your comment that it seemed to be kind of a relief for him to let his pain go out through his music. Even Dimash can be a beast on stage I think in private he is rather introverted and holds back his emotions what makes it difficult for him to process these emotions. On another occasion he said the only way to express his emotions towards his dears is to sing. I believe it’s the same thing with other emotions. He needs his music to let them out. Not a new song but a new arrangement of Qaragym-ai, (apple of my eye) you need to know the reason why he did this for the 60th Anniversary KazakhConcert. His teacher, mentor and good friend Kenes Duysekeev died from covid-19 in July and Dimash was very close to him, very fond of him, so it hit him very hard. He wanted to do this as a tribute to him and to rearrange the song to show the respect Dimash had for this very talented teacher, composer, poet and very nice man. Kenes composed this song 20 years ago, and when Dimash first asked if he could perform this song when he was around 19/20 Kenes doubted that at such a young age Dimash would be able to put across the meaning and intense emotions in this song, so he asked Dimash to sing it for him beforehand. When he heard and saw how Dimash could absolutely put across the deep meanings and emotions he was very happy to give him the song to perform. This newly arranged performance is in my opinion a triumph, Dimash's perfect vocals are heartbreakingly beautiful and just having a piano, perfect ❤

I was waiting for you to react to him , seeing other people reaction already. I knew that he will perform this song in memory of his beloved mentor who died of Covid week after his master graduation . Also another lecturer of his university also died of the same illness. He was devastated. That’s in Late June and Kazakhstan was under lock down only opened for domestic traveling in July. He had sang this song before and got “ bravo” from Kenes , the composer of the song who said that for the young guy , Dimash had deep understanding of the meaning of the song. I have seen the old one and to me it was emotional but the voice pitch was different. But still very impressive and there are lyrics so I can understand the meaning of the song. I was praying that he will not breakdown during this performance because he has broke down once during his London concert when he sang “ sos” delicate that song to his friend who died . He shouldn’t keep looking at his friend on the big screen while singing and I just have a hunch that he won’t be able to control his emotional. I love just his voice and a piano accompanied him. This time it was more emotional than the previous one . Bravo to him. This concert was to celebrate 60 years of culture and music and it was televised on national Kazakh television . So I have seen it first and also from other people who attended that concert because this performance came out before Dimash releases it. Thank you for your reaction.
