That has an Astatic mono crystal cartridge, and 7½ grams is actually pretty light for it -- I have a late '60s GE portable record player with the same cartridge, and it tracks at 9 grams. The replacement stylus for it is the Pfanstiehl 700 series, with a wide variety of stylus types available for it: 0.7 mil for playing stereo LPs and 45s, 1 mil for mono LPs/45s, 2 mil "all speed" stylus (not recommended), and 3 mil for 78s.

I have an Emerson 101 Suitcase style record player in Denim with this same cartridge on it. I actually taped quarters to the back of my tonearm to bring it down from TEN GRAMS down to the cartridge's rated 4 grams. It was carving new grooves into my styrene 45s without the counterweight of the quarters.

Aww man When you open it up and show us the inside. This takes me back to watching mr. rodgers as a kid, whenever he would take something apart or talk about a machine. Like the time he and the arcade operator open up the controle pannel to the donky kong machine at the arcade and he shows us all the switches and contacts inside the game and how they work. Thanks for sparking that bit of late-90s/early 2000s nostalgia in this video

Interesting little record player, reminds be a bit of a endless loop battery operated cassette player I had in the early 70's when I was about 8 or 9 that was red and pretty much the same size. I used to love that and I would have loved to have this record player to

It is indeed an old-school crystal (rochelle salt) cartridge. It only needs one pair of leads because it's strictly mono. It's very common in kiddie and many 'portable' players of that era. Store that someplace DRY and away from humidity. Moisture is hell on crystal cartridges. Causes 'em to crumble into a white lumpy powder. Modern ceramics generally don't have that problem. As for knowing what the speed is.... you don't. You twiddle that knob until it sounds 'right' to you. Like very old record players before 78 rpm was standardized - you adjusted the speed (regulator) until it sounded 'right'. I know a lot of people would be tempted to call that speed controller a 'potentiometer', but it is not. It is actually a rheostat. Basically just a variable resistor. I know, I know, 'semantics', but not really. Potentiometers are generally designed to handle very, VERY small amounts of current, while rheostats can handle quite a bit more. And that rheostat is why there are two sets of batteries in this thing. The amp is as loud as it is because it runs on 9V, but 9V run through that rheostat would cause it to get hot; hence the lower motor voltage. Also, 'C' and 'D' cell batteries have far more capacity than 9V batteries. I dig the 45 adapter, too. Simple, minimalistic, and effective.

That's correct...its a rheostat! Garrard made a couple of record players in the '50's with rheostats for pitch control. They were underspecced for the amount of current going through them and didn't work too well. As for speed, this thing needs one of the small diameter stroboscopic discs that Garrard and other manufactures made decades ago: one of those would fit on that small platter.

I presume the speed control is there because back in the day , batteries were pretty poor and soon lost voltage. As the batteries depleted you could adjust the speed.

It's funny that Singer made record players when it is better-known for its manufacturing of sewing machines, but then again, I have a Singer 16mm film projector, so Singer can make whatever it wants to make. :)

Singer also made 16mm movie projectors. Good machines. I have one in my accumulation.

Assenbled in USA from Japanese components. The amplifier is pretty simple, basically just a single transistor driver, with transformer coupled push-pull output. Intended to work with high output crystal cartridges.

Wow! That Flutter! Yeah, the belts in that thing do need to be replaced. If that is as rare as you think it is, it may be worth cleaning up and restoring. I remember those little players and we did have those as kids. As kid's during the 70s, there was only three ways for us to listen to music. Listen to it on the radio, play it off a record on something like this, or actually go to a live performance (how I remember when tickets only cost a couple of dollars!). There was no streaming, no iPhones, even then, cassettes were just still coming out at the time.

Nice and compact. I'd see about maybe replacing that one belt there was still some warble, Maybe buy one of those multi sized belt kits and see what fits. Amazing that the crystal cartridge has life left in it! I have a GE record player that uses that same cartridge but my stylus is missing.

if you go to the site the voice of music that cart is listed they had 3 types of low output mono ceramic 0.5 volt. If you could adjust the weight a new cart would work you just brige it for mono output. All three listed have the same specs track force verys on them from 4 up to about 6 grams

Looks like what GE used in their portable record players when I was a child of 1-2! (The cartridge, that is.)

Not a horrible table. Cool name considering I work in textiles as a plastic welder(the women sew fire barrier products) Singer is a common known name to me. I wish I could find a portable turn tables that was light weight with a sealed dust cover and Bluetooth output with no speakers to eliminate weight. This is cute turntable though.

Look more carefully at the markings on the speaker. It is rated for 0.3 watt (300 mW), not 3 watts. Possibly / probably there were originally rubbery blocks in the recesses on the platter spokes. The cartridge is ceramic.

Found a couple of these in New Orleans a bit after Katrina in an Antique shop they wanted stupid money for some water damage non workers and then about a month later found a blue one except not Singer branded it was Kyoto or something I didn't by it because it was like $50 and regretted it went back later that same week and it was gone I might have a photo but thats like 5 phones ago so it's probably on a hard drive waiting to be found again 😁 , couple observations love the WD contact cleaner it works well on old amps and pots no issues , but 3 in One oil is terrible for plastics, much better off with White Mineral Oil or SUPER LUBE grease or other food grade lubricants they do much better on plastics SUPER LUBE in a small syringe is great for hard to reach spots or dabbed on a toothpick its also dielectric.

It is a toy and will damage your records for certain, it is a toy, the tonearm can be adjusted to lower the weight, it's too high now, the higher weight in result will wear out the record faster, not worth destroying your collection, keep it as a toy,
