For my full course on how to become an amazing singer, go here:
bit.ly/1c1myGD
There's been an amazing response to my videos on vocal technique. But it's hard to continue doing the in depth, 3 part, vids that I've been doing. So I decided to start doing "Quick Tips." Videos that last 5min or less, that address the common vocal issues that you guys email me about.
This vid deals with nasality in the voice. The same principles that apply in this vid for alleviating nasality also apply to developing a healthy belt voice sound.

I think the Lord has introduced your videos to me. You have been amazing in your teaching, I have learned more in the couple of hours of "like'ing your videos than I have in years. Thank you God for giving me this opportunity and Thank You Eric for all the lessons you give us for free!

Diaphragm is between abdomen and thorax.. we have to make our diaphragm flat to expand our breath pressure so our neck and vocal chord relax and the air can flow very easy to reach that high tone with good sound quality.. cool video with simple explanation =)

You're always supporting by drawing the breath low in the body, whether you're singing low, high, soft, or loud.

Bravo. He's like an Alton Brown in the way he explains things. Very clear and hands-on. He doesn't leave you with more questions, unlike some other online instructors. I feel satisfied with whatever I've learned after watching this guy's videos.

this is my problem : nasality. if i succeed in solving it through your advices I will be soooooooo grateful. thanks eric
@ericarceneaux
@ericarceneaux 16 лет назад
Yep. Sounds like you're on the right track, especially with the low back expansion. Getting the low back to expand with the inhale is a "secret" used by many of the best singers. Keep pressing onward - you have good instincts.
@ericarceneaux
@ericarceneaux 17 лет назад
Yeah, unwanted nasality is a common problem for singers of all genres. Thanks for your video response.
@ericarceneaux
@ericarceneaux 16 лет назад
By definition, "belting" is pulling the chest voice up. This is unhealthy, since it encourages a tight throat. However, I suggest striving for a "belt sound." By "belt sound", I mean singing with the intensity of true belting without the strain. The key is to find focus in the voice, while in the mix. This will bring a forceful sound to the tone, without strain in the neck. I'll be doing a video on this in January, so stay tuned.

i know everyone has told you this...but you are an amazing teacher and your approach works!!! i followed what you said to do in several of your videos and then i tried singing some of my favorite songs. I ended up hitting high G's and A's with relatively no problem!! Thanks soo much!
@ericarceneaux
@ericarceneaux 17 лет назад
Nasality is generally a result of a tight/clenched throat, which leads to both vocal damage and an unpleasant vocal tone. ...Celine Dion is a product of a Francophone environment. Nasality in pronunciation of certain words is simply a part of the French language. However, Celine's "nasality" is not caused by excessive muscle tension.

Eric, I checked out your videos, experimened with the technique, then took off for a gig... I never sounded so strong for so long, and I've only made it through the first 10 vids. Excellent, truly excellent. Thank you for spending the time to do such thorough videos.
@ericarceneaux
@ericarceneaux 17 лет назад
Even with Garth Brooks, I would say that his "nasal" sound is more a product of his diction and it is a desired aesthetic in his genre. This video is for the many who have undesired nasality in their voices. I think that to completely switch genres, instead of working to alleviate the nasality might be a little extreme. Especially since there are significant vocal health issues involved.

Hi, Eric! I'm a big fan of your music and I actually was almost brought to tears by one of your songs in Myspace. My biggest problem in performing is that before I sing, my throat dries up, and even if I drink tons of water, the fluidity of my normal, relaxed voice (like whenever I take a shower) does not resonate. My voice cracks up and becomes dull. Hence, some people say that I force my voice out when I perform. Seriously though, I sing better in the shower. Haha. Thanks, Eric.

I sometimes use "ningy-ningy-ningy-ningy-ningy" while goign down the scale (and in a completely exaggerated character voice) and that helps clear a lot up for me. Don't know if it will work for you, but it can't hurt =) Also avoid drinking COLD liquids.

^_________^ I wish everybody knew what you're teaching. I'm not saying I'm that special or anything, but breathing low like that is a concept my junior high band teacher drilled into us. Sadly, I've slipped out of the habit of doing that (I haven't played my instrument in over a year), and breathing deeply - and quickly, on demand - is something Ireally struggle with now. Glad to see there's a way to retrain myself.

Smoking is NOT ok. Smoking deteriorates every muscle group needed for singing, along with damaging organs that we need to live. In my private practice, I don't even accept clients that smoke (unless they're trying to quit). As a vocalist, your body is your instrument. Take care of it - you only get one.

I have a question. I tend to have a lot of nasal congestion sometimes and it affects my range. Any tips on how to cut it down? I cut out dairy, and I drink a lot of water. Will vapour rubs and so on help? I ask because I saw a show on the E channel that said singer Mariah Carey uses vapourisers to keep her nasal cavity clear. I want to know what is the best way to approch the problem.
