Singing Scales vs Songs

In this video I teach you why singing scales is NOT the same as singing lyrics in songs. This is KEY to learning to master song-singing!
Singing Scales vs Songs
In one of my videos I discuss "does just singing scales make you great"
This is a perfect example of a lack of good information on the RU-vid channels just providing scales and not showing what those scales are for and how to do them correctly.
You see, when you sing a scale, you are only singing one vowel.
You have no vowel exchanges from one vowel to another and you are not adding any consonants that closes the throat down, and no one has shown you how to re-open that throat to get from one word phrase or one passage in a song to the next passage in a song.
A kind of roadmap so to speak on how to connect the vowels and how to re-open the throat after closing the throat down with a consonant.
So scales sung correctly are helpful for strengthening individual vowels but then one also needs to learn the exchange from one vowel to another.
I cover this thoroughly in my singing course

This is so seriously important, but it takes time and experimentation to get good at it per note, per vowel. Ken is the only teacher that ever took the time to explain the basics.

For two weeks I will try to put the vowels in the "face" (mask?) instead of putting them in the bell canto position. I have done lots of that and as you explain, putting the vowel in front makes it much easier to sing for a longer period of time, e.g. when we are rehearsing in the band. I always need to finish earlier because of my voice feeling "tired". Looking forward to working with this! You have an excellent way of explaining difficult stuff "easily" enough for me to understand without having to communicate directly!

That's just awesome how the universe works. I just had a conversation with a Vocal Coach about it yesterday. I hit the highest notes with vowels, but then when it comes to a song, I stand there and don't know-how. I mean, I can do it, only the sound sounds so twangy. I know the vowel was wrongly placed. I always do the La-a exercises very often. It doesn't matter where I'm in the car or anywhere else. The only funny thing is that I opened RU-vid, and the first video I saw came straight from you. Universum: Hey Nina, listen to it again from the master :-) I will practice the exercise you are doing right now. Nice to be reminded again. For me personally you are simply the best coach out there

9:19 that's cool....no one ever told me this stuff - in the higher registers modify the tighter vowels like "e" to a more open vowel sound ("ah") for less strain on vocal tract . It's so logical. Thanks.

To add to and simplify what Ken said ~ the obvious secret hidden in plain sight, that almost no one knows .. Lyrics are never sung how they are written. (and each persons AH vowel center is slightly different placement, because we are all unique, but that’s a deep dive)

Do you have a video on what can cause some notes in the middle of your range to be more challenging than others? I find I frequently struggle with the A above middle C more than the notes around it. If I have to sustain the A for an extended period of time it has a tendency to fall back in the throat. However, if I take the same phrase up a half step and make the high note a Bb it's suddenly way easier. It's also easy if I make the high note a B or C, or lower the note to an Ab or G. It's not a problem for every A I ever sing, but it's common enough to be annoying. Any advice is appreciated!

Take what I’m gonna say with a big grain of salt, because I’m all I’m saying here is my own personal experience and a *little* bit of research, I’m no expert. But, like Ken has referenced in some other videos, we have 3 registers: our speech register, our belting register, and our head voice. For me, my belting register is between C#4 and Ab4. When I’m at the tip top of that belting register, and I’m totally using my chest voice, not a mix, that note is pretty hard to hit, and harder to shape/mold/play with. When I move higher, and go past that note, I *have* to switch into a head or mix voice. But, a head sound is much more comfortable and easier to control for me, it feels lighter, and less strained, despite being higher. For example, my mixed voiced C#5 feels better and sounds cleaner than my chestier A4. When I hear you say that your notes, whether they are higher or lower than that A4 sound better than your A4, it makes me think that perhaps that A4 is at the peak of your belting register. Being aware of where that vocal break is and using that information to inform how I’m going to choose to hit each note helps smooth that out for me. Instead of using a very thick, wide, chest resonance, I might start pairing that down/mixing with head resonance at F#4, and continue to bring in more head resonance as I ascend, so that when I do hit that A4 and Bb4, they sound smooth in succession. Don’t know if this experience helps/applies to you but I hope it does!
