Increasingly, Saddle Hunters are using rappel techniques to return to the ground after a hunt. The Omega Pacific SBG is a rigid mechanical device which can be used in both belay and rappel. As demonstrated, the device can be tethered onto the climber, so as to ensure that it is not dropped.

The Omega Pacific device looks pretty handy with the different options for various types of rappel. It definitely seems easier to make noise when clipping into than something like a Black Diamond ATC. Whether that tradeoff is worth the extra flexibility in rappel modes will be a personal decision for each person. Great idea about tethering it to you, though the location you chose wouldn't work on a doubled-rope rappel. Perhaps this is a good use case for a paracord soft-shackle. If you need to rappel on a doubled-rope, you can feed one of the ropes into the device (at which point it is reasonably secure, though you could clip your bridge's carabiner through the rope+device at this point if desired), then remove the soft-shackle from the device, then feed the other rope.

In my testing on a stationary doubled rope rappel, the rope doesn't need to go around the body; it simply drops through each slot and around the carabiner. As such, we can relocate the "tether loop" to the middle hole.

You mentioned about adding more resistance during the rappel. Is there another configuration of the rope in the device that gives you more friction, or were you referring to adding more resistance on the brake side? Asking for us 250lb folks.

I believe you're gonna be fine as demonstrated. I tested it wearing 50lbs of cast iron and it worked great. But if you needed more, after the rope exits the device, it can go back through and around the carabiner 360 degrees for even more friction. Just don't let the moving rope contact the gate

Nice device, but I see no need for it, you’ve sold me on the Munter!

Which saddle are you using?

My saddle is the 2020 Aerohunter Flex, which is no longer available. I am due for a new saddle!

@@jrbtcspeaking of saddles , I’m using a homemade , mostly hand sewn with thick waxed thread, adjustable double panel copy of the Eberhart Signature with extra bridge, both adjustable and instead of the loops that come up into groin area I have leg loops that are lower near my knees, like a climbing saddle, so it’s a blend of hunting saddle and climbing saddle design, and made from 2 in camo web with D rings , I’ve been making custom modifications and finally got it satisfactory for rope climbs, can hang away from the tree comfortably , and sit all day on tether at height. This year will use the Pursuit Platform with steps on the same strap
