Finger trowel, Slicker, Fugspiker depending on where in the world you are. If ime doing soffit on top of frame I use Eaves Lintols which are designed for this as for wall plates depending on the builder or if its my job I find it better to get the blockwork spot on height and no bed then screw the plate to the blockwork dry that way it's easy to get all imperfections and bows out of the plate.
Slicker!!! That's the word I was looking for! Cheers mate. It's strange how things are different from one part of the country to another, we're not allowed to not bed the plate on! Hope you're well and keeping busy, thanks again mate.
1:4 is far too strong for LBC commons . It also makes the muck ugly . 1:4 is the BS for engineering bricks . Pointing in is the lost craft . The correct mix should be 1:1:6:.
I looks like this dormer loft was build on the outer wall and I'm wondering why some people build them on inner walls. Are there any rules apart from minimum 20 cm from eves? 🤔
Hello Daniel. This dormer was built off the inner skin, you shouldn't have any issues with the weight transferring down by doing that, but it's still got to be all 'speced' out.
In the past I've knocked a few large headed galvanised felt nails in the underside of wall plates to give the mortar something to hold on to. I know gravity should stop it moving but I've seen wallplates that have moved a bit on older buildings.
I nail a 50mm roll of EML on mine as well as the usual straps. I started building back in 1988 so was taught by old skool builders! Great videos though mate. Really enjoy them 👍🏼
@@mrabuilders6723 I have seen an engineer spec 10x140mm frame fixings at 1m centres down the middle of the wall plate. Once there mortar has gone off of course. Seems like it might help stop any movement from breaking the joint, but pretty belt and braces.
Hello Changy, hope you're well mate. Yeah, you are coming across as the small turd in the large swimming pool with that one! Haha! Not allowed onsite, fair enough. But we both know that in the real world It makes absolutely zero difference to the structural integrity of the building. Have a great week mate, hope the weather doesn't set you back too much.
Hello mate. I have no idea why it's different up and down the country. I've always known it as compo, I was told years ago that that's because it's a composition of a couple different things...how true that is...who knows!??? Thank you for watching, really appreciate it.
3rd of Jan that was my birthday and I was probably snuggled up in bed, no I wasn’t still had tea making duties to do for one who should be obeyed. Love the work glad the weather was kinder - next week looks to be a cold one. Ta-Ra-A-Bit look forward to the next one. 👍🏻Mike
Superb job!Guys. Just got my drawings from architects as I'm looking to build something similar. Are cavity trays and weep vents always needed? As I don't see yours got those?😮
Hello Kevin, hope you're well mate. The weep holes go between the perps on the lintel course, so there wouldn't have been any need to go higher had he wanted the cavity tray. Cheers for watching mate.
Thank you Tom, it's ace to hear that you're getting something out of our videos. If you have any questions about anything please just ask, take care and thanks again.
Fascinating how you build over there in Olde Blighty. Some of it I recognise as standard procedure but others would never fly here in Oz cos the cyclones would take it away or the ants would eat it. :)
Hello boys, chippy apprentice here, enjoy your videos too much American rubbish for me here on RU-vid. Just like to ask what’s your trade background how did you get around to doing what you do now. Doing my time in carpentry, self teaching plastering… planning to learn and expand on other trades.
Hello Karol, hope you're well. Who are you doing your apprenticeship with? Richard is a chippie by trade and I'm a bricklayer. The next videos will be Richard building the roof so look out for them mate as they'll be full of hints and tips that may be of use to you. Take care mate.
@@mrabuilders6723 thanks for the reply. I'm based in South Wales UK working for a contractor doing loft conversions and refurbishments. Watching these videos are very relative and helpful. Look forward to the roofing 😁
Hi Stephen and thanks for commenting. We use 2” x 10 screws with brown plugs. 1 has to go maximum up from the bottom and then one per block. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
You still need flashing because masonry walls are subject to condensation forming in the wall. Forms due to moist air from inside the house and cold masonry exterior brick.
Haha! You edited that and still spelt it wrong! I get it Delvin, but we like to explain what we're doing and why we're doing it. Appreciate you watching though. Take care.
Can you share more about reusing materials from one job on another? I’m wondering if any of the clients watching would feel miffed about something taken out their house being reused rather than disposed as they (presumably) expected, or the new building clients feeling hard done by for not getting new materials. Do you need to be explicit with everyone?
Hello grassfolk1, hope you're well. If the customer wants thing thrown away and we can see a use for it then it gets used again. Anyone who has an issue with materials being reused and would rather they go to landfill can go swivel as far as we're concerned! The same customer wouldn't mind in the slightest if we used reclaimed bricks to match their house so that voids any argument they may have. Not that I've ever had a customer be so silly, and I've had some silly customers!
Ooooo that's too broad a question to answer I'm afraid. If you've got any drawings then send them over and I'll happily give you a price that should steer you in the right direction.
Ken bruce leaving radio 2! Whatever are you going to do? You will have to migrate to his new station if you want to continue battling on popmaster. Kevin m
Hello Kevin, hope you're well. It's the final nail in the Radio 2 coffin mate, the glory days are well and truly gone! There's two things that Ken Bruce is taking to Greatest Hits Radio...Popmaster and me!!!
@@mrabuilders6723 i dont want to surprise you or cause upset but i believe you will not be the only one in what will probably be a few million, myself included.
This was absolutely masterclass as always. Loved the hessian prop in the background, freezing or not the show must go on!! I've not seen a single drop of rain this year, really not sure what is happening🤣.
Great video! Quick question...any reason why you guys didn't use PIR boards within the walls cavity? Not sure you can speak about this, BUT how much would a job like this cost? We are considering doing something like this but with a wrap around the property, going up to the loft level! We are located in Wolverhampton if your in the area!
Hello Ragz, if you've got drawings then feel free to email them to us to the address in our bio. PIR insulation isn't the easiest to use in the cavities for reasons that I think I'll go into in another video, thank you for the inspiration!
@@mrabuilders6723 thanks for the reply! We’re in early talks of this massive project. If we find the right land we would like to build our own home instead! Will reach out once we have an idea which way we want to go.
Now you'll never meet a more stickler of the detail than me, but even I think that's the detail too far! Haha! It's all set out practically from the inside, if you let the external define the internal, you can find yourself in a whole world of hurt! Hope you're well mate. Thank you for watching.
What do you make of the vervor laser? I had one and after a month receiver stopped working, Got intouch with them was like trying to get blood outa a stone, they didn’t even replace it😡😂
Hello Craig. I think it's ace, I'd always recommend them. I know that they are cheap (comparatively) but I had a really expensive Stabila one once, when it broke I took it to get fixed and was told that they don't make them anymore so they didn't supply the parts even though they still sold the complete tool for nearly £700. I feel.for anyone who paid that thinking that they were covered if it went wrong. So i bought this one for just over £100, I was obviously dubious at first but I've got to say it's been fantastic and I don't mean that as in it's good for the money, I mean it as I think it's fantastic even if I paid a lot more for it.
@@mrabuilders6723 they defo work, I just got a dudd but it’s like anything, out can be faulty I suppose. As long as it works. Bet your glad you got the brick work done before the cold snap 🥴🤮😂
Great video as always. We're looking at getting an extension, very similar size on a similar property - what would you quote roughly for a job like this?
Hello Jamie, I'm afraid that I can't really say until I see the drawings. If you've got them then send them over and I can give you a ballpark figure which should help you when getting quotes.
@@mrabuilders6723 I see you are engaged in construction, I am also a builder, maybe we will exchange subscriptions? if it's not difficult for you, I'm from Ukraine
Another top video ladies 👍you boys are right up my street, alot of brickies/builders wouldn't bother changing that brick on the lintel.but that's what everyone is going to look at for the next 50+ years 👍
