Fun Fact: One of the musicians on the Titanic, Roger Marie Bricoux, wasn't registered dead in France after the disaster, so in 1913, the French Army charged him with desertion. It wasn't until 2000 (88 years after he died) that Roger Marie Bricoux was officially recognized as dead. I was obsessed with the Titanic when I was a kid, so I spent like 10 years of my life learning everything I could.

It is a fake story unfortunately, Thomas Dillon and Frederick Scott who were two survivors of the engine room testified that all or most of the engineers actually made it out of the Engine room alive before the sinking not due to cowardice but due to the fact there was no point of them being there once they had realised the water pumps had failed. Titanics lights could effectively power themselves. The only reason most of the engineers died is because they couldn't get a place or didnt make it in time for a lifeboat.

(3:05) Many people think that captain Smith was foolish for keeping full speed, but I’m glad you included the fact that this was standard practice at the time. The idea was “get out of danger as swiftly as possible”, so he kept the engines at full speed as to not stay in the ice berg field any longer than his ship had to.
@jnstroik

Smith was reckless, skipped critical safety drills for no reason and was a coward in the end who neglected his duties. He was personally reasonable for a lot of the unnecessary deaths that day.

On the subject of Captain Smith's demise, I read one survivor's account that stated he was clinging onto one of the overturned lifeboats after the ship went down. Out of fear that the overturned boat could sink with too many people on it, many were told to wade next to it. Except one. The survivor stated when someone in the dark intended to climb onto the lifeboat, he told them that it couldn't carry anymore. The individual then stated, "All right boys. Good luck and God bless you." and swam away. Due to the night, it was too dark to see this man. But some swore it sounded like Captain Smith.

The flares were also a bit of a problem. The SS Californian was only 20 miles away from the Titanic and had put out a warning about the icebergs in the area, a reason she herself had stopped for the night, which supposedly was ignored by Titanic's wireless operator who was busy going through the backlog of passenger messages. The captain of the SS Californian was awakened after crew saw the Titanic's flares, which were actually white rockets. At the time "company rockets" were fired to acknowledge ships operated by the same company, so the captain assumed that the Titanic was trying to "wave" to another ship. The Californian tried several times to contact the Titanic via Morse lamp, but did not try to contact via wireless. So why were the rockets a problem? Well the Titanic's rockets were new tech, and exploded almost like a firework. They were also not fired at the appropriate interval to signal distress, once ever minute. There were long gaps of up to 8 minutes and the Californian only saw 8 rockets fired in total. The random timing of the rockets actually signaled "navigation problem, please stay away." Which was a relatively common and nonworrying issue, especially during a dark night with icebergs around. Again, there was also the thought that the Titanic was trying to wave at another ship or using them as the fireworks they appeared to be.

The thing that really tears me apart the most is the lifeboats not going back. But I don't blame them. Sad and as horrible as it sounds, they had to wait for people to die. If they had gone back too early, the boat would literally have been torn to splinters with people trying to get inside. Unfortunately, they did wait a little too long. But just the idea of wanting to save people, but knowing that in order to do that, you have to let others die first... heartbreaking. Those people on the boats did not have an easy decision.

The boat would be torn apart if it was too close to the ship's suction during its final plunge. If the boats would go to the dying people after the ship has sunk, the passengers would swamp the boats since they are like uncontrollable animals because of panic.

The Californian was a crucial part of the story I'm surprised wasn't included. The Californian was a ship less than 10 miles from the Titanic which had its radio turned off so it did not hear the distress call. However, those on the deck of the Titanic could see the ship on the horizon and thought she would rescue them so loading the boats to capacity wasn't a priority for the deck officers. The captain of the Californian changed his story of why he didn't help the sinking ship but it's believed they thought the ship had stopped for the night like they had due to ice, and mistook the distress flares for a party on deck. The idea that crew incompetence led to lifeboats being half full is a myth perpetuated by the 1997 movie which completely cut the Californian from the sinking scenes

You forgot to mention the Californian. She was near the titanic when she started sinking. The look out on the Californian saw titanic 's rocket and went to tell the captain, who was sleeping. The captain told them to not mind it. At 5:00am (still 14th), he woke up and learned of the horrifying events that had happened. They were close enough but they didn't bother. If you are thinking: what about the radio room? Californian only had turned off their radio early that night. The Carpathia sped towards the titanic at speeds that exceeded their maximum knots.
@AhSatan
@AhSatan 5 лет назад
Yeah, the Californian could've helped, but there are many factors as to why they didn't. While rockets were used for distress situations, they were also often used for ships to signal to other vessels, especially if they didn't have a radio aboard and wanted to identify themselves. They could have mistaken it like that. These days rockets aboard are mainly, if not only, used for distress, and they are usually red in colour. Now for the radio operators. To be fair, they DID warn Titanic multiple times about the icebergs in the area, but since the operators on Titanic were trying to clear backlogs at the time, they got frustrated and told them to "shut up". Since it wasn't illegal at the time for the radio to be switched off, the operator called it a day and went to bed. Now, that's changed, and all ships require the radio to be on 24/7. A lot of mistakes were made on that day, but in the end, if it weren't for the Titanic's sinking, we wouldn't have the safety procedures that we have now.

Fun fact: the Titanic's sister ship, RMS Olympic, was one of the ships that received Titanic's SOS. Olympic was 500 miles away so the captain knew they wouldn't make it there before the ship finished sinking but they could still pick up survivors. However, Olympic's captain changed his mind and decided not to attempt to pick up survivors, his reason being that he did not want to terrify them by having an exact image of the ship they just watch sink coming to pick them up
@Graysoneli2
@Graysoneli2 3 года назад
You're half right. Olympic offered to take the survivors, to which Ismay (CEO of WSL at the time) had the wireless operator respond with a firm no, due to the fact the ships were virtually identical, and panic attacks or breakdowns could ensue.

Many eye witnesses last saw Captain Smith on deck by the wheel house. But the wireless operator who survived, Harold Bride, would testify that he saw the Captain Smith in the water help someone onto an overturned boat. Also, it was long held that Thomas Andrews was last seen in the first class smoke room looking at the painting in shock, due to a surviving witness. However, that man got onto a life boat which puts the timeline way before her final plunge. Where I am going with this is that there were witnesses who saw Andrews with Capt. Smith at the front of the ship say "there's nothing else for it" and then the two jumped into the water as it came up to the railing. I think that this is the most likely. History Travels did a good segment on this.

Im so happy that you didnt talk about the overdramatized, romantic part of the thing. Also, the real reason why they didnt spot the iceberg in time, was the fata morgana, a disorientating effect. It compeletly messes up the horizon and all those are on it. Like a painting that has been ruined. The iceberg was under a literal, black fog like blanket until they reached it. The fata morgana was also the reason why the Carpathia didn't go for the ship to save the staff and the passengers. The stars on the sky were flickering like an old lamp, the ship itself didn't look like it's the biggest vessel ever built, all because of the same effect, the luftspiegelung(german). The people on the Carpathia said that they saw a cargo ship instead of a passenger carrier ship. Scary, isn't it? All of the SOS signals were flickering with the stars, it was all unintelligible and incomprehensible. There was no human inattention on a kissing couple, that was the nature's doing. Beautiful, but also deadly
