I wouldn't say desperate. He starts making the joke, gets interrupted (not rudely, just happens sometimes), and he doesn't try to fight back to get it in, he realises that Caine's starting a new part of the story and doesn't want to barge in so he waits until it's free to comment

Beyond the fact that Graham Norton is a consummate host, the prime reason his show is so successful is the couch of camaraderie. Whereas American TV talk shows feature guests for 5.4 minutes with a host, Graham goes for the spontaneity created with multiple guests. It's like a lively cocktail party with an appreciative audience.

back in the 70's and 80's many talks did the multiple guest for a while but sadly that was only daytime talk shows. the comcept slowly phased during the late 90's when every talk show was doing BS Trash talk shows like Springer, Bay, Lake, Povit, and etc. Opreh switch to one on one style during the last 15 years of her show and everyone copy that style til today. late night was different ball game. Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall plus Pat Sajack (yeah, Mr. wheel of fortune had a talk show for a while) did some multi guests interview on occasion.

@@barryroach1980 Clearly you must have blinked during the whole segment where he shows the trick or just need a new set of eyes. He blinked after he had showed the trick, when he says, "and that's the trick". If like Pat Malloy, your brain is not functional and holds the belief that Michael Cain was referring to the whole conversation when he says "I didn't blink the whole time that I was looking straight at you", then you might as well get a new brain alongside those new set of eyes.

I agree with everyone here saying Graham never interrupts and that's why he's such a good host compared to American talk shows. But I'll go even deeper, another reason is because he finds guests with similar energy levels or vibes and puts them all on a couch together. There are no arms of chairs acting as barriers between people, that is important, you suddenly feel closer to the people next to you. Not just two guests like you'd see in America either, he often has 4-5 guests onstage at once. This gives the feeling of a small party. With so many people onstage at once, Graham cleverly blends into the background as guests bounce stories off one another. It really works and I love this format. I wish we had this show in America. I watch as many clips as I can find here.

It's interesting to hear Michael Caine talking about only looking in one eye, the one closes to the camera. The first time I heard about it was while listening to the commentary for The Haunting (1963). Actor Richard Johnson (plays Dr Markway) talks about it. Such natural chemistry among those four entirely different characters on the sofa! What a gorgeous episode! The Graham Norton Show is just a different league.👍🏻

I’m hooked on watching all of Graham Norton’s old interviews. Now with covid, it’s not the same. It’s aweful in fact. I wonder whether we can get it back to the way it was and such fantastic guests. It was the best.

When Sir Caine said "I'm talking to YOU!" with that tone, I suddently sat upright, straightening my back. And he wasn't even looking toward the camera...

I always liked Michael Caine. When I was just a young boy I remember some spy movies with him which I did not understand back then, but still I loved how cool he was in those movies.
