Sir Mix-a-Lot Explains How Publishing Beats Out Royalties

www.vladtv.com - Legendary entertainer Sir Mix-a-Lot opened up to VladTV about the importance of publishing for artists, calling it "long money." He explained that a lot of artists get caught up in the joys of the royalty check at the beginning of their career, but Sir Mix-a-Lot broke down why owning your publishing is the best thing to do.
The Seattle-born emcee said that he owns about 98% of his publishing, and has used it to recoup money on various projects over the years. He then shared a story about The Pussycat Dolls sampling "Swass" for their track "Don't Cha," which became a big hit. Mix-a-Lot said that he came out on top in the scenario, because he never thought "Swass" would do anything when he put it out.

One thing that amazes me is that you got all these kids that want to do music but none of them read books about how the music industry works. All You Need To Know About The Music Business by Donald Passman covers all the basic stuff on how you make money in the music business as an artist. This book first came out in 1994 and has like 9 editions over the years. The first story in the book is how the Happy Birthday Song is a 2 million dollar a year business because everytime you hear it in a TV show or movies the publishers gets a check. I bought this book and it immediately made me money because it told me how to license a song to cover it and sell it legally like you see all these RU-vid musicians do. This was back in 2007-2008 when hardly nobody was doing this shit. You can license a song for 9.1 cent a copy from the Harry Fox Agency and now it's multiple services that do it and do your own version and sell it on iTunes and put it on Spotify and everything.

Sir Mix-a-Lot is correct in this. Here is an example: The most famous holiday song in the US is "The Christmas Song", originally recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946. The last I heard, before Nat Cole's widow died a few years ago, the Nat Cole estate received about $90,000 a year from that one song, that is only played for about a three week period each year. But Nat Cole did not write the song, Mel Torme and Robert Wells wrote the lyrics and the music. Nat Cole's estate is only paid for his performance of the song. The estates of Mel Torme and Robert Wells is paid for "every" performance and use of the song and lyrics, so if the Nate Cole estate receives $90,000 per year, the Wells and Torme estates received significantly more. Another example is the Motown song catalog, Jobete. When Berry Gordy sold Motown for $61 million, he did not sell Jobete. He sold it later for in excess of $330 million.it is the song catalog that really matters, because it covers any version of the song and music, and all artists who perform it, not to mention usage in TV, movies, commercials, elevators, etc.

Fuck what you say lil bastards about him good or bad. This man was all about his music and went to the next level with his cars that many at the time most could not even pronounce Gemballa nor even know what it was. btw...the cover album of Mack Daddy was the 1st Lamborghini Diablo to hit the USA and put it on a album cover while rocking the most expensive sneaker at that time....Reebok Pump!

That's why I don't understand why some artists sell all their publishing n original records then years later like R. kelly cry n say they broke¿¿¿ They do it for the money not thinking of the future and how more $$$$$$ they can make then regretting it later.

Thank you. All these artists especially black ones who think you don't need an education. Listen and learn it is the music BUSINESS. Artists should take businesses courses before getting into the industry. Sir Mix A Lot leveraged one or two songs and don't have to work for the rest of this life because he was smart with his business.
